How Elon Musk Manages His ‘Legion’ of Babies

April 15, 2025 at 10:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Wall Street Journal looks at how Elon Musk juggles more than a dozen children and “harem drama” along with running his companies and advising President Trump.

“Musk’s baby-making project is relevant to his ambition for NASA, which he wants to move faster to go to Mars. He said on X that making people multiplanetary is ‘critical to ensuring the long-term survival of humanity and all life as we know it.’”

“In Musk’s dark view of the world, civilization is under threat because of a declining population. He is driven to correct the historic moment by helping seed the earth with more human beings of high intelligence.”

“His businesses are set up to serve the idea: The main objective of SpaceX is to build a rocket ship capable of getting to Mars, and his other companies, including electric-car maker Tesla, help finance the plan.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

April 15, 2025 at 8:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We can’t go on like this as a divided nation, as divided as we are. Like I said, I’ve been doing this a long time. It’s never been this divided. Granted, it’s roughly 30%, but it’s a 30% that has no heart.”

— Former President Joe Biden, quoted by NBC News.

Fueling Political Wire, One Cup at a Time

Every morning before the sun’s up, I sit down to work on Political Wire with a cup of Trade Coffee beside me.

It’s become part of the ritual — opening the laptop, scanning the news, and taking that first sip of a roast matched perfectly to my taste. Trade connects me with small roasters across the country, delivering beans that are always fresh and far better than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

If you love coffee as much as I do, use this link to get a free bag of coffee and taste the difference for yourself.

U.S. Plans to Use Tariff Negotiations to Isolate China

April 15, 2025 at 7:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration plans to use ongoing tariff negotiations to pressure U.S. trading partners to limit their dealings with China, according to people with knowledge of the conversations,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The idea is to extract commitments from U.S. trading partners to isolate China’s economy in exchange for reductions in trade and tariff barriers imposed by the White House. U.S. officials plan to use negotiations with more than 70 nations to ask them to disallow China to ship goods through their countries, prevent Chinese firms from locating in their territories to avoid U.S. tariffs, and not absorb China’s cheap industrial goods into their economies.”

“Those measures are meant to put a dent in China’s already rickety economy and force Beijing to the negotiating table with less leverage ahead of potential talks between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The exact demands could vary widely by nation, given their degree of involvement with the Chinese economy.”

White House Moves to Limit Newswire Access

April 15, 2025 at 7:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House announced Tuesday that it was eliminating the traditional press pool access for wire services after a federal court ordered the administration to end viewpoint discrimination against the Associated Press,” Bloomberg reports.

“The move will significantly reduce the traditional level of access for journalists from the AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg News to the press pool, which cover the president in areas like the Oval Office and aboard Air Force One where space is limited.”

Trump Didn’t Bail Out Zuckerberg in Antitrust Case

April 15, 2025 at 6:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mark Zuckerberg called the head of the Federal Trade Commission in late March with an offer: Meta would pay $450 million to settle a long-running antitrust case that was about to go to trial,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The offer was far from the $30 billion that the FTC had demanded. It was also a fraction of the value of Instagram and WhatsApp, the two apps Meta had bought and were at the heart of the government’s case.”

“On the call, Zuckerberg sounded confident that President Trump would back him up with the FTC.”

April 15, 2025 at 5:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump Is Killing One of Our Strongest Exports

April 15, 2025 at 5:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Catherine Rampell: “President Donald Trump says he wants to reduce our trade deficit. Yet he’s destroying one of our winningest exports: higher education.”

“Colleges and universities are among America’s most competitive international exporters. In dollar terms, last year, the United States sold more educational services to the rest of the world than it sold in natural gas and coal combined.”

Why You Should Be Scared

April 15, 2025 at 4:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Noah Smith: “First, there’s the obvious: Trump is going around arresting innocent people, and sending them to foreign torture-dungeons, apparently for the rest of their lives. Bloomberg reports that about 90% of these deportees had no criminal records in the U.S., and most have not been charged with any crime…”

“Some were arrested simply because they had (non-gang) tattoos. Others didn’t even have any tattoos, and were arrested for no apparent reason.”

“It’s not clear why the Trump administration is doing this. Perhaps it’s to scare immigrants into leaving the country by making an example of a few. Perhaps it’s to simply assert power, or to test the boundaries of what they can get away with… Who knows. But what’s clear is that this is brutal and lawless behavior — the kind of arbitrary arrest and punishment that’s common in authoritarian regimes.”

“The second thing that should scare you is the lawlessness… In practice, the administration is arguing that as soon as they arrest someone and ship them overseas, U.S. courts have no right to order their return — ever. That means that Trump could grab you, or me, or anyone else off the street and put us on a plane to El Salvador, and then argue that no U.S. court has the right to order us back, because once we’re on foreign soil it’s the domain of foreign policy.”

Democrats Want to Visit El Salvador Prison

“Two members of House Democratic leadership are trying to send an official congressional delegation to the El Salvadorian prison where the Trump administration is sending deportees,” Axios reports.

“Dozens of House Democrats have privately expressed interest in participating in such a trip to protest the Trump administration’s deportation policies.”

“But while lawmakers could travel to the Central American country informally, a Republican committee chair’s approval is needed to send an official Congressional Delegation, or Codel.”

April 15, 2025 at 3:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hollywood director Chris Columbus told the San Francisco Chronicle that he wants to cut Donald Trump’s cameo from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, saying it’s become a “curse” on the film and “an albatross on me.”

He added: “I can’t cut it. If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country. I’ll be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so I’ll have to go back to Italy or something.”

Jimmy Kimmel Blames Liberals for ‘Manufactured’ Outrage

April 15, 2025 at 3:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jimmy Kimmel told Rolling Stone that a “big part” of why Donald Trump won a second term is because of “manufactured” outrage against comedians from liberals.

Said Kimmel: “I think a lot of the outrage is completely manufactured, and it’s like, a lot of these people who are angry aren’t really angry.”

He added: “I think these liberals who’ve done such a good job of viciously attacking comedians are a big part of the reason why Trump is the president right now.”
