Adelson Looks for Republican Who Can Win

March 25, 2014 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who along with his wife plowed more than $92 million into efforts to help mostly losing candidates in the 2012 elections, is undertaking a new strategy for 2016 — to tap his fortune on behalf of a more mainstream Republican with a clear shot to win the White House,” the Washington Post reports.

“This time, the Adelsons are plotting their investments based not on personal loyalty, but on a much more strategic aim: to help select a Republican nominee they believe will have broad appeal to an increasingly diverse national electorate.”

California to Send Voter Cards to Obamacare Applicants

March 25, 2014 at 7:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Heading off a lawsuit over compliance with a federal voting rights law, California officials have agreed to help millions of state residents register to vote,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Under a deal announced Monday by several voting-rights groups, the state will send voter registration cards to nearly 3.8 million Californians who have applied for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.”

“The move will ensure that many residents can complete or update their registration in time for the June 3 primary election, representatives of the groups said, and bring the state into compliance with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993. The law requires that certain state offices provide clients with registration opportunities.”

David Brock Returns to Arkansas

March 25, 2014 at 7:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

During the Clinton administration, David Brock “was a self-described conservative hit man intent on taking down the Clintons,” the New York Times reports.

“He famously went to Arkansas in 1993 and wrote an article for a conservative magazine asserting that state troopers had facilitated sexual liaisons for Bill Clinton, then the governor, which led to Paula Jones’s 1994 sexual harassment lawsuit against Mr. Clinton and Mr. Brock’s elevation in Republican power circles.”

“On Tuesday, Mr. Brock will return to Arkansas for the first time since that article, this time in the warm embrace of the Clinton world: He is a featured speaker at the Clinton School of Public Service at the University of Arkansas, delivering an address titled ‘Countering the Culture of Clinton Hating.'”

Fueling Political Wire, One Cup at a Time

Every morning before the sun’s up, I sit down to work on Political Wire with a cup of Trade Coffee beside me.

It’s become part of the ritual — opening the laptop, scanning the news, and taking that first sip of a roast matched perfectly to my taste. Trade connects me with small roasters across the country, delivering beans that are always fresh and far better than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

If you love coffee as much as I do, use this link to get a free bag of coffee and taste the difference for yourself.

Branstad Talks About Secret Settlements

March 25, 2014 at 5:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Newly disclosed secret settlements between state government and former public employees show that some of the workers believed they were subjected to discrimination, inappropriate behavior and retaliation for blowing the whistle on improper bidding practices,” the Des Moines Register reports.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) “answered questions publicly for the first time Monday about the controversy… He vowed Monday that ‘heads will roll’ if any secret settlements are made again. Branstad signed an executive order prohibiting confidentiality clauses in future settlements.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

— Former Sen. Scott Brown (R), quoted by the AP, on his New Hampshire U.S. Senate race.

Bush Won’t Decide on White House Bid Until 2015

March 24, 2014 at 5:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

People close to Jeb Bush (R) “said he has not formally begun to consider a presidential campaign but plans to decide no later than early 2015,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Bush adviser Sally Bradshaw: “People who thought he was not looking at this race six months ago were underestimating his interest, and people who think he’s made a decision and is moving forward to run right now are exaggerating where his thinking is.”

Quote of the Day

March 24, 2014 at 4:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This is not a presidential election. This is a bunch of elections in different states.”

— Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), quoted by Fortune, on why Republicans will not put forward a unified agenda for the midterm elections.

Kirk Won’t Campaign for Durbin Challenger

March 24, 2014 at 4:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) ruled out campaigning for U.S. Senate nominee Jim Oberweis (R), saying he would rather “protect” his relationship with Sen. Dick Durbin D-Ill. and not launch a “partisan jihad,” the Chicago Sun Times reports.

Said Kirk: “I’m going to be protecting my relationship with Dick and not launching into a partisan jihad that hurts our partnership to both pull together for Illinois.”

Women Overwhelmingly Oppose Birth Control Limits

March 24, 2014 at 4:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Hart Research poll finds that 68% of U.S. women voters oppose allowing corporations to refuse to cover contraception in their health plans because of religious objections.

Key findings: “Women of all demographics overwhelmingly support the provision of the Affordable Care Act requiring employers to cover contraception and other preventive health services for women, including 92% of Democrats, 83% of independents, 63% of Republicans and 79% of Catholics.”

Reid Suggests GOP to Blame for Putin’s Actions

March 24, 2014 at 4:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) says Republicans may have helped Russia annex Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, the AP reports.

“The surprising accusation came ahead of a Monday test vote on a Russia sanctions and Ukraine aid bill that Republicans blocked before Congress left for recess two weeks ago. Since, Crimea seceded and Russian lawmakers annexed the territory.”

Said Reid: “It’s impossible to know whether events would have unfolded differently if the United States had responded to Russian aggression with a strong, unified voice.”

The Anti-Politician Politician

March 24, 2014 at 11:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) “has reinvented himself again,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“He shuns most trappings of the office. There’s no motorcade, no entourage. The governor showed up at the elections department with a lone campaign advisor and his wife, who snapped a photo using her smart phone.”

“Brown fashions many of his own speeches, veto messages and even press releases. His staff in the governor’s office is about half that of his Republican predecessor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who employed as many as 230. He often goes months without a public appearance, sometimes holed up at his home in the Oakland hills, calling authors, experts and others he wrings for information.”

Fox Blocks Quinn’s Ad

March 24, 2014 at 10:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) “wasted little time likening his Republican rival Bruce Rauner to one of pop culture’s most infamous rich guys: C. Montgomery Burns of The Simpsons, the Chicago Tribune reports.

“The Quinn campaign put a new web ad up making the unflattering comparison as the governor continues a class warfare theme against his general election foe. Quinn argues Rauner’s wealth leaves him out of touch with everyday people. The ad features snippets of Burns, the evil owner of Springfield’s nuclear power plant in the long-running animated series.”

But the ad quickly was blocked on YouTube with a message that reads “This video contains content from FOX, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.”

Brown Floods New Hampshire with Ads

March 24, 2014 at 10:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Scott Brown (R) and his allies are flooding New Hampshire with hard-hitting, 30-second political ads as he begins his U.S. Senate campaign, the Boston Globe reports.

“Shaheen’s allies have fought back but, in a sign of potential trouble for the Democrat and her supporters, they have been overwhelmed by the opposition’s barrage, outspent by a margin of more than 4-to-1. The gap is already becoming a grave concern among state Democrats who fear that national party leaders are not making the race a priority.”

“The spending levels from out-of-state Republican groups have already surpassed what Mitt Romney’s campaign spent on ads during the entire 2012 New Hampshire primary.”

Whites More Solidly Republican

March 24, 2014 at 9:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Whites and nonwhites have long shown differing political party preferences, with nonwhites widely favoring the Democratic Party and whites typically favoring the Republican Party by at least a small margin. In recent years, however, the margins in favor of the Republican Party among whites have been some of the largest.”

McCain Ramps Up for Re-Election

March 24, 2014 at 9:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “may not have decided whether to seek re-election in 2016, but he is making all the moves to ensure that he can mount an intimidating campaign if he decides to seek a sixth term,” the Arizona Republic reports.

McCain is set to headline an April 24 re-election fundraiser… and “he is putting together a network of political support.”

Osborn Memo Not Authentic

March 24, 2014 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nebraska U.S. Senate candidate Shane Osborn (R) distributed an official-looking Navy memo supporting his account of his 2001 decision to land a crippled Navy EP-3 reconnaissance plane in China that has dogged his campaign.

But the Omaha World-Herald “has learned that the unsigned memo was not authorized by the Navy, or vetted through normal channels, and was written as a favor to Osborn by a Navy buddy working at the Pentagon.”
