White House Squeezed on Immigration

February 4, 2014 at 7:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New momentum in Congress for a broad overhaul of border-control laws has prompted White House allies to demand that President Obama halt deportations of millions of illegal immigrants, many of whom would be allowed to remain in the country under a legislative deal,” the Washington Post reports.

“The push places the White House in a difficult political position as it attempts to negotiate with a House Republican caucus sharply divided on immigration. Leading conservatives said over the weekend that the chief impediment to a deal is their distrust that Obama would enforce new border-security provisions if a large portion of the nation’s 11.7 million illegal immigrants are granted legal status.”

Ted Cruz Makes Nice

February 4, 2014 at 7:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After battling with Senate Republicans for much of 2013, prompting tense confrontations and occasional shouting matches, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is starting to achieve what once seemed unthinkable: He’s getting along reasonably well with most of his GOP colleagues,” Politico reports.

“In an olive branch to his colleagues, Cruz privately assured them he wouldn’t raise money for a conservative group attacking GOP senators. And he even allowed the Senate to leave early for its Martin Luther King Jr. Day recess by dropping demands for what would have been a futile attempt to gut Obamacare.”

Utah Lawmakers Apologize for Offensive Tweets

February 4, 2014 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two Utah lawmakers — including Senate President Wayne Niederhauser (R) — apologized Monday for a Twitter exchange about changing genders that drew quick outrage on social media,” the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Rep. Jake Anderegg (R) posted that the private House men’s restroom was occupied, and he was “strongly considering a gender identifying change to use the open women’s.”

“That drew a response from Niederhauser’s account, teasing Anderegg for agreeing to co-sponsor a bill banning discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Utahns — the result of a computer glitch Friday — ‘now switching your gender identity? Just can’t keep up with you! You’re a new man. Er … woman.'”

February 3, 2014 at 5:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are defending a series of websites they established that appear to support Democratic candidates for Congress, but instead direct contributions to the GOP,” NBC News reports.

“The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) said its websites were not confusing, and accused Democrats of crying foul because their candidates were struggling.”

O’Malley Begins Preparing a Presidential Bid

February 3, 2014 at 1:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) told the Washington Post he is moving ahead with preparations for a possible presidential bid and can’t wait for Hillary Clinton to decide whether she is running.

Said O’Malley: “I have a great deal of respect for Hillary Clinton. But for my own part, I have a responsibility to prepare and to address the things that I feel a responsibility to address… To squander this important period of preparation because of horse-race concerns and handicapping concerns is just not a very productive use of energy… Right now, I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing — the thought work and the preparation work.”

Wendy Davis Bungles Her Campaign

February 3, 2014 at 11:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dave Mann: “I’ll concede here at the beginning that I’ve never worked on a political campaign. Nor do I have any experience in media relations, publicity, political communication or whatever else flacks do. I don’t know the nuances of trying to defuse controversy with a speech. But I have covered many political campaigns in Texas the past decade, so I know what it looks like when a campaign handles the press well.”

“And the Wendy Davis operation is about the worst at media relations that I’ve ever seen. Her team’s mismanagement of the press is damaging her candidacy.”
