White House Official Knew of Nunes Bombshell

March 29, 2017 at 7:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ryan Lizza: “Last Monday morning, shortly before the start of the hearing, a senior White House official told me, ‘You’ll see the setting of the predicate. That’s the thing to watch today.’ He suggested that I read a piece in The Hill about incidental collection. The article posited that if ‘Trump or his advisors were speaking directly to foreign individuals who were the target of U.S. spying during the election campaign, and the intelligence agencies recorded Trump by accident, it’s plausible that those communications would have been collected and shared amongst intelligence agencies.'”

“The White House clearly indicated to me that it knew Nunes would highlight this issue. ‘It’s backdoor surveillance where it’s not just incidental, it’s systematic,’ the White House official said. ‘Watch Nunes today.'”

Jonathan Swan: “With the credibility of his Russia investigation under question — even from Republicans — Nunes needs to prove he hasn’t colluded with the Trump administration. Lizza’s reporting surely doesn’t help.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) is in the middle of a firestorm he created in what appears to be a clumsy attempt to shield President Trump from his own committee’s investigation of Russian influence on the Trump campaign.

White House Tried to Block Sally Yates from Testifying

March 28, 2017 at 10:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration sought to block former acting attorney general Sally Yates from testifying to Congress in the House investigation of links between Russian officials and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the Washington Post has learned, a position that is likely to further anger Democrats who have accused Republicans of trying to damage the inquiry.”

“Yates and other former intelligence officials had been asked to testify before the House Intelligence Committee this week, a hearing that was abruptly canceled by the panel’s chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA).”

“This is done because the White House wanted it to be done. And this is what a cover-up to a crime looks like. We are watching it play out right now.”

— Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), quoted by Politico, on suspicions that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) is coordinating with the White House on the Russia investigation.

Storm Builds Around Nunes After Secret Visit

March 27, 2017 at 8:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The storm around House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) intensified after it was revealed that he secretly visited the White House grounds the day before announcing incidental surveillance of President Trump’s transition team,” The Hill reports.

“Nunes struggled to provide an explanation for the unusual trip on Monday even as Democrats demanded that he step aside as leader of the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the U.S. presidential election.”

“The visit raised questions about whether the White House itself was the source of the mysterious intelligence that Nunes, but no one else on Capitol Hill, has seen.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the committee, called on Nunes to recuse himself.

Nunes Admits He Was on White House Grounds

March 27, 2017 at 10:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It has been something of a mystery, the whereabouts of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes on the day before his announcement that he saw information suggesting that communications of then-President-elect Donald Trump and his advisers may have been swept up in surveillance of other foreign nationals,” CNN reports.

“One source said that Nunes, a California Republican, was seen on the White House grounds the day before his announcement. In a phone interview, Nunes confirmed to CNN that he was on the White House grounds that day — but he said he was not in the White House itself.”

Nunes Vanished Just Before He Made Surveillance Claims

March 25, 2017 at 9:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hours before the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee announced his shocking claims about surveillance of the Trump transition team on Wednesday morning, he practically disappeared.”

“Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) was traveling with a senior committee staffer in an Uber on Tuesday evening when he received a communication on his phone, three committee officials and a former national security official with ties to the committee told the Daily Beast. After the message, Nunes left the car abruptly, leaving his own staffer in the dark about his whereabouts.”

“By the next morning, Nunes hastily announced a press conference. His own aides, up to the most senior level, did not know what their boss planned to say next. Nunes’ choice to keep senior staff out of the loop was highly unusual.”

Nunes Now Unsure Trump Associates Were Surveilled

March 23, 2017 at 6:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) does not know “for sure” whether President Trump or members of his transition team were even on the phone calls or other communications now being cited as partial vindication for the president’s wiretapping claims against the Obama administration, ABC News reports.

Said a spokesperson: “He said he’ll have to get all the documents he requested from the about this before he knows for sure.”

Nunes Apologizes to Intelligence Committee

March 23, 2017 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) “apologized to members of his panel Thursday for not informing Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat, before going public with allegations that Trump transition messages were inadvertently intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies,” Politico reports.

A committee aide said that Nunes apologized “for not sharing information about the documents he saw with the minority before going public” and that “he pledged to work with them on this issue.”

Nunes Undermines His Own Investigation

March 23, 2017 at 8:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Klein and Shushannah Walshe: “Since when does the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee provide updates to the president of the United States on surveillance conducted on his associates? Especially when that committee is investigating contacts involving the president’s associates?”

“Chairman Devin Nunes’ bizarre day left the California Republican looking more like the campaign surrogate and adviser he once was than the independent oversight committee chairman that he now is… Indeed, Nunes’ main accomplishment appears likely to be the undermining of the investigation he has been leading.”

“His ‘new’ information about surveillance of Trump associates reveals little new, nothing illegal and nothing that contradicts FBI Director James Comey’s statement that there’s no evidence to support the president’s tweets about wiretapping ordered by President Obama. What else is new? More prominent voices in both parties are now saying only an independent investigator or a special ‘select’ committee can handle this inquiry.”

Nunes Claims Trump Transition Was Under Surveillance

March 22, 2017 at 2:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) said that members of the Trump transition team, possibly including Trump himself, “were under surveillance during the Obama administration following November’s election,” Politico reports.

“Nunes said the surveillance appears to have been legal, incidental collection and that it does not appear to have been related to concerns over collusion with Russia.”
