McCain Uncertainty Fuels GOP Concern About Senate Seat

April 4, 2018 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “As the Arizona Republican battles brain cancer, party leaders are contemplating the unusual prospect of defending two Senate seats in the state this year — something they are already doing in Mississippi as they seek to improve on their 51-49 advantage in the midterm elections.”

“McCain’s health has been shrouded in secrecy, leading many Republicans to privately wonder if he will remain in office beyond May 30. If he doesn’t, there would probably be a special election for his seat in the fall. Congress will return Monday from a two-week recess with no clear indication that McCain, 81, will be back. He has been absent since December.”

How Russian Trolls Smeared John McCain

February 27, 2018 at 4:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

An Arizona Republic survey of Sen. John McCain-related tweets collected in an NBC News database of messages finds that Russian accounts routinely spread insults and conspiracy theories smearing McCain as a “traitor” and a “RINO.”

“That the Russian Twitter trolls sought to discredit McCain, R-Ariz., was perhaps predictable given the six-term senator’s longstanding criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who officially sanctioned McCain in 2014.”

Trump Slams McCain Again

February 23, 2018 at 10:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump mocked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — without using his name — for his no vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act, Axios reports.

Said Trump: “Remember, one person walked into a room when he was supposed to go this way (Trump enthusiastically gives a thumbs up) and he said he was going this way, and he walked in and he went this way (Trump throws his thumb down) and everyone said what happened? What was that all about? … I don’t want to be controversial so I won’t use his name. What a mess!”

Just two weeks ago, Meghan McCain told Politico that Trump had called her to say he would “back off” her cancer-stricken father.

McCain Described as Increasingly Frail

December 15, 2017 at 11:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sources in the Senate tell CNN they have been worried about Sen. John McCain recently.

“The sources described McCain as looking increasingly frail and said he has not spoken up in recent GOP meetings the way he had before, in addition to his absence this week for treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center.”

”One source said that McCain always used to speak up in these meetings, and that he hasn’t at all recently. The source was not commenting on McCain’s mental acuity, but on his energy level, and pointing out that his lack of participation was not normal.”

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “has been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for recovery from the side effects of another round of treatment for brain cancer,” the Washington Post reports.

“McCain, who missed a third straight day of Senate votes Wednesday, has been undergoing rounds of chemotherapy and radiation to treat glioblastoma, the terminal form of brain cancer he was diagnosed with in July. McCain has been undergoing treatments since early September at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, next to Walter Reed.”

McCain Will Support GOP Tax Plan

November 30, 2017 at 11:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that he will support the Republican tax plan, The Hill reports.

Said McCain: “After careful thought and consideration, I have decided to support the Senate tax reform bill. I believe this legislation, though far from perfect, would enhance American competitiveness, boost the economy, and provide long overdue tax relief for middle class families.”

It Could All Come Down to John McCain

November 29, 2017 at 11:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “After sinking his party’s hopes of repealing the Affordable Care Act this year with a dramatic thumbs-down, the fate of a tax overhaul may now sit in the hands of the Republican from Arizona. In recent days, Mr. McCain has been fairly tight-lipped about his views on the tax proposal speeding through the Senate, saying he sees some problems with the existing bill but is waiting for a final plan before making a decision. Asked about what concerned him about the Senate tax bill this week, Mr. McCain replied tersely: ‘A lot of things.’”

“Even those who know Mr. McCain best are unsure how he will vote, but if history is any guide, Republicans have reason to worry. Mr. McCain has voted against big tax cuts before, including two that passed under another Republican president: George W. Bush.”

McCain Opposes Trump Nominee Over Torture

November 9, 2017 at 7:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), “who has already warned President Donald Trump against bringing back torture, is vowing to reject any administration nominee who has backed so-called enhanced interrogation techniques,” Politico reports.

“McCain was the sole GOP senator to vote against confirming Steven Engel to lead the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel earlier this week, citing his role in the controversial torture memos under the George W. Bush administration.”

Quote of the Day

October 23, 2017 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One aspect of the conflict, by the way, that I will never, ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest-income level of America and the highest-income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur. That is wrong. That is wrong. If we’re going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.”

— Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), on C-SPAN.

Bonus Quote of the Day

October 16, 2017 at 9:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain ‘the last best hope of earth’ for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.”

— Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), in a speech at the 2017 Liberty Medal ceremony.

McCain Urges Bipartisan Effort on Tax Reform

September 26, 2017 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “is laying down the same marker on tax legislation as he did on health care, demanding regular order and support from both parties — a stance that has proved pivotal in thwarting Senate Republican efforts to undo Obamacare,” Bloomberg reports.

Said McCain: “We need to do it in a bipartisan fashion. I am committed, as I’ve said before, to a bipartisan approach, such as we’ve been doing in the Armed Services Committee for the last 53 years.”

McCain Says His Cancer Prognosis Is ‘Very Poor’

September 26, 2017 at 8:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) says doctors have given him a “very, very serious prognosis” as he battles brain cancer, CNBC reports.

Of his chances for survival, McCain says: “Some say 3 percent, some say 14 percent.”

“McCain underwent surgery in July for a brain tumor that was later found to be a form of glioblastoma, the same type of cancer that took the life of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 2009. McCain said that he thinks about Kennedy a lot. He says Kennedy continued to work despite the diagnosis and ‘never gave up because he loved the engagement.'”

Gohmert Calls for McCain’s Recall

September 25, 2017 at 12:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) believes Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “should be recalled while he battles brain cancer and so that the GOP can replace him with someone who will support the party’s latest effort to repeal the 2010 health care law,” Roll Call reports.

Said Gohmert: “Nothing inhibits recovery from cancer like stress. I think Arizona could help him, and us. Recall him, let him fight successfully this terrible cancer, and let’s get someone in here who will keep the word he gave last year.”

McCain Blasts Latest Obamacare Repeal Effort

September 18, 2017 at 7:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “ripped his party’s process for trying to repeal and replace Obamacare but stopped short of saying he would oppose their latest bill,” The Hill reports.

Said McCain: “I have talked and talked and talked about the need to do regular order. I have amendments that I would like to have votes on … Am I going to be able to have those, or is it going to be an up or down vote? That’s not why I came to the Senate just to give up or down votes.”
