Thomas Friedman: “In the last Democratic debate, Joe Biden declared that he would nominate a woman as his vice-presidential running mate. That felt right at the time. But times have changed. Biden needs to go much, much further: At the Democratic convention he needs to name not just his vice president, but his entire cabinet. And it needs to be a totally different kind of cabinet — a national unity cabinet — from Democrats on the Bernie Sanders left to Republicans on the Mitt Romney right.”
Trump Launches Virtual Daily Campaign Events
“President Trump is launching a daily schedule of online campaign programming that, combined with daily White House briefings, is part of a double-barreled strategy to woo voters virtually after the coronavirus canceled live events,” the Washington Examiner reports.
“The Trump campaign plans to broadcast one marquee event on its website and social media channels each day this week and nearly every Monday through Saturday in the weeks ahead. The programming is an acceleration of efforts to reach voters amid a public health crisis that grounded the president’s robust itinerary of stadium rallies and roundtables, as well as similar gatherings hosted by prominent supporters.”

Wisconsin Supreme Court Blocks Postponing Primary
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that Gov. Tony Evers (D) cannot postpone Tuesday’s presidential primary, despite virus outbreak fears, the AP reports.
Trump Gives New Material for Attack Ads Every Day
Washington Post: “As Democrats escalate their general-election campaign against the president, they have targeted his failure to act urgently to deflect the damage the coronavirus is wreaking over lives and the economy, as he brushed aside intelligence briefings and warnings from health officials while holding fundraisers and gathering thousands of his followers at rallies.”
“Their greatest ammunition? Trump’s own comments, aired daily in the marathon coronavirus briefings where he commands center stage.”
Wisconsin Governor Suspends In-Person Voting
“Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) issued an executive order Monday suspending in-person voting in Tuesday’s elections, citing the intensifying health threat of the coronavirus pandemic,” the Washington Post reports.
“The abrupt move came after the GOP-controlled state legislature refused to postpone the vote during a special session Evers called on Saturday.”
“Evers’s order Monday postpones in-person voting and the receipt deadline for mail-in ballots to June 9.”
The AP reports it’s “a move that will almost certainly prompt a court challenge and inject new uncertainty about whether the election will move forward.”
Wisconsin Mayors Urge Postponement of Primary
“Mayors from some of the most populous cities in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee and Madison, are calling on the state’s top health official to shut down in-person voting at Tuesday’s primary, as a legal battle over absentee voting in the state reaches the Supreme Court,” Politico reports.
From the letter: “We implore you to implement all emergency measures necessary to control the spread of COVID-19, a communicable disease. Specifically, we need you to step up and stop the State of Wisconsin from putting hundreds of thousands of citizens at risk by requiring them to vote at the polls while this ugly pandemic spreads.”
Nathanial Rakich: Yes, Wisconsin still plans to hold its primary on Tuesday.
Trump Hits Biden Over ‘Virtual’ Convention Idea
President Trump criticized Joe Biden for considering a “virtual” Democratic convention due to the coronavirus pandemic:
Joe Biden wanted the date for the Democrat National Convention moved to a later time period. Now he wants a “Virtual” Convention, one where he doesn’t have to show up. Gee, I wonder why?
Biden Seeks to Revive Fundraising
Washington Post: “Some of his allies fret that, even before the pandemic, Biden was far behind President Trump, who has been raising money for the general election since 2017. They worry the current environment — which makes it impossible for Biden to hold intimate, in-person gatherings with wealthy donors, and in which Trump has much more visibility — may deepen his challenges.”
“Biden’s backers hope his name recognition and voter enthusiasm to oust Trump will ultimately make up for any financial setbacks — and, they point out, Republicans face the same hurdles in raising money while the coronavirus remains a threat. Supporters note that the anti-Trump sentiments will ultimately rally the party, and its donors, around the eventual nominee, and Biden has a delegate lead to challenge Trump in the fall.”
Pelosi-Aligned Super PAC Books $51 Million In Ads
Politico: “The early reservation by House Majority PAC is spread across 29 markets and offers a window into how Democrats view the size and shape of the House battlefield this fall, with massive funds slotted for Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Texas.”
“HMP, which is closely allied with Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), is the first of the major House party committees and outside groups to announce fall ad buys.”
Biden Says Convention May Be Virtual
Joe Biden told ABC News the recently delayed Democratic Convention will have to happen, but conceded that it may need to be held virtually if the novel coronavirus continues to pose a public health threat by mid-August.
GOP Stalls Effort to Postpone Wisconsin Primary
“Republicans stalled Gov. Tony Evers’ move to push back Tuesday’s election, quickly adjourning a special legislative session to deal with voting issues in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
“During Saturday’s proceedings, the Assembly and state Senate each gaveled in and within seconds recessed until Monday.”
Top Sanders Advisers Urge Him to Drop Bid
“A small group of Bernie Sanders’s top aides and allies — including his campaign manager and his longtime strategist — have encouraged the independent senator from Vermont to consider withdrawing from the presidential race,” the Washington Post reports.
“Sanders himself has become more open to the prospect of dropping out, especially if he suffers a significant defeat in Tuesday’s Wisconsin primary, which polls suggest Joe Biden will win handily.”
How GOP Is Using the Pandemic to Suppress Vote
“President Trump and a growing number of Republican leaders are aggressively challenging efforts to make voting easier as the coronavirus pandemic disrupts elections, accusing Democrats of opening the door to fraud — and, in some cases, admitting fears that expanded voting access could politically devastate the GOP,” the Washington Post reports.
“Around the country, election officials trying to ensure ballot access and protect public health in upcoming contests face an increasingly coordinated backlash from the right. Much of the onslaught of litigation has been funded by the Republican National Committee, which has sought to block emergency measures related to covid-19, such as proactively mailing ballots to voters sheltering at home.”
Rick Hasen: How Republicans are using the pandemic to suppress the vote.
Trump Squandered His Incumbent’s Advantage
Matt Lewis: “Springtime may be a time for rebirth and hope, but it’s also a time when heavily bankrolled presidents vanquish the out-party nominee.”
“Except, this year, that’s impossible. Trump clearly has his hands full with a major crisis. What is more, the seriousness of this pandemic (and the fact that Trump has already botched his handling of it) makes it very hard to deploy his brand of scorched-earth mockery. Doing so would not just provoke a potential backlash for its unseemliness, it would also reinforce the notion that Trump isn’t fully focused on saving lives.”
“In essence, the coronavirus did what no imaginable force could possibly do: It neutralized Donald Trump’s ability to humiliate his opponent, while giving his opponent the perfect excuse to lay low.”
Biden Begins Vetting Possible Running Mates
Joe Biden said that “he will announce a committee to oversee his vice presidential selection process and is already thinking about whom he’d choose to join his Cabinet,” the AP reports.
“Biden, who holds a significant lead in delegates over Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic presidential primary race but has yet to officially clinch the nomination, also said he’s spoken to Sanders to let him know he’d be proceeding with the vice presidential vetting process.”
“Calling Sanders a ‘friend,’ Biden said, ‘I don’t want him to think I’m being presumptuous’ by choosing a running mate. But he added that the vice presidential vetting process ‘takes time,’ so he has to begin this month.”
Trump Insists on In-Person Voting for November Election
“Punctuating the White House task force briefing Friday, President Trump said adamantly that the general election would still take place Nov. 3, dismissing any suggestion of mail-in voting,” the Washington Post reports.
Said Trump: “I think a lot of people cheat with mail-in voting. People should vote with ID, voter ID, I think voter ID is very important. The reason they don’t want voter ID is because they intend to cheat.”
He added: “It shouldn’t be mail-in voting. It should be you go to booth and you proudly display yourself, you send it in the mail… all sorts of bad things can happen… by the time it gets in and is tabulated.”
“Trump did not provide any evidence to back up his assertion and immediately ended Friday’s news conference after discussing the topic.”
Meanwhile, the Palm Beach Post reports that Trump himself has requested a vote-by-mail ballot for the Florida Republican presidential primary.
Wisconsin Governor Calls Special Session on Voting
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) “is calling lawmakers in to stop people from going to the polls Tuesday to vote and instead mail ballots in an effort to prevent thousands of people from being exposed to coronavirus,” the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
“Evers on Friday called a special legislative session for 4 p.m. Saturday to convert Tuesday’s election entirely to a mail-in election, a change he called for a week ago, but state election officials said was too late to accomplish and Republican lawmakers rejected.”
