“Matt Lieberman, an entrepreneur who is the son of former Sen. Joseph Lieberman, became the first Democrat to enter the race for retiring Republican Johnny Isakson’s seat on Thursday with a promise to be a voice for frustrated Georgians,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
Three Way Democratic Race In California
A new Public Policy Institute of California poll finds Elizabeth Warren leading with 23%, followed by Joe Biden at 22%, Bernie Sanders at 21%, Kamala Harris at 8% and Pete Buttigieg at 6%.
No other candidate is preferred by more than 3%.
Key finding: Among voters with a candidate preference, 53% would consider supporting another candidate.
Pelosi Says 2nd Term Could Cause ‘Irreparable Damage’
Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted congressional Democrats were obligated to push forward with their impeachment inquiry regardless of its political ramifications for the 2020 election — but also warned that a second term of Donald Trump’s presidency would wreak “irreparable damage” upon the country, Politico reports.
Said Pelosi: “I will say this: Having said all of that, separate from that, the re-election of Donald Trump would do irreparable damage to the United States. We have some serious repair and healing to do in our country for what he’s done so far. I’m not sure that two terms — it might be irreparable.”
Did Bernie Sanders Have a Heart Attack?
Slate: “Based on the information his campaign has released, this scenario seems to be what happened to Bernie Sanders on Tuesday evening. Without a close look at Sanders’ medical chart, it’s impossible to make a definitive diagnosis, and I have not reviewed the details of his case other than what has been reported to the media by his campaign. But even the scant information we have—that he had stents inserted overnight following an acute cardiac episode—is enough to be able to say: This was very likely a heart attack.”
“I asked the Sanders’ campaign directly if they could confirm that this was or was not a heart attack. They declined to comment on the record. On Wednesday evening, the Wall Street Journal ran a story that originally stated a spokesperson for Sanders said the senator ‘didn’t suffer a heart attack,’ but that story was later updated to remove that assertion.”
First Read: “As long as he’s a presidential candidate, at age 78, the campaign owes the public more answers about his health situation.”
Trump’s Impeachment Defiance Spooks Key Voters
“President Trump was in trouble with women voters long before House Democrats launched a formal impeachment inquiry against him last week. Since then, his standing has grown only worse,” Politico reports.
“Nearly a half-dozen polls conducted since last Tuesday, when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi directed her colleagues to proceed with pursuing Trump for potentially impeachable offenses, have shown women voters rallying behind her decision, exacerbating concerns among White House allies that white women who helped carry Trump to victory in 2016 can no longer be counted on next November.”
“The development comes as independent voters and college-educated whites — two more demographic groups that could make or break Trump’s reelection bid — have shown signs of softening their resistance to impeachment.”
Biden Builds a Super Tuesday Firewall
“Joe Biden’s campaign is ramping up its investment in the Super Tuesday states, anticipating a Democratic race that narrows to two candidates by early March,” Politico reports.
“The increase in staffing across the 14 states that will vote March 3 comes as Biden’s polling numbers have declined and Elizabeth Warren’s have surged, particularly in states like Iowa and New Hampshire where she’s heavily invested in field organization.”
“The former vice president’s campaign is still counting on strong finishes in the four early nominating states. But in the event of weaker-than-expected performances, a built-out Super Tuesday organization would provide a fail-safe for Biden.”
Biden Vows to Fight Trump’s Attacks
Hours after President Trump described him as “stone-cold crooked,” Joe Biden vowed on Wednesday the Republican president is “not going to destroy me,” Reuters reports.
Said Biden: “I’m not going anywhere. You’re not going to destroy me. And you’re not going to destroy my family. I don’t care how much money you spend or how dirty the attacks get.”
He added: “He’s afraid of just how badly I would beat him next November.”
Bonus Quote of the Day
“Obviously, Batman is a billionaire and he’s got all the great gear, so that’s appealing. Then again, he doesn’t really strike me as happy, so, yeah, I’m going to stick with Spiderman.

Warren Now Leads Democratic Field
A new Monmouth poll finds Elizabeth Warren leading the Democratic presidential field with 28%, followed by Joe Biden at 25%, Bernie Sanders at 15%, Pete Buttigieg at 5%, Kamala Harris at 5%, Andrew Yang at 2% and Mairrane Williamson at 2%.
The remaining 11 candidates included in the poll register 1% or less.
No Change in Trump Reelect Prospects
A new Monmouth poll finds recent events have not moved public opinion in either direction on whether President Trump deserves a second term, but his reelection bid remains underwater, with particular signs of weakness among critical voting blocs.
Just under 39% of registered voters feel that Trump should be reelected in 2020, while 57% say it is time to have someone new in the Oval Office.
Sanders Undergoes Heart Surgery
Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign announced Wednesday that he underwent surgery to insert two stents after blockage was found in an artery, Axios reports.
Sanders will cancel his events and appearances until further notice.
Warren Jumps Into National Lead
A new Economist/YouGov poll finds Elizabeth Warren leading the Democratic primary field with 26%, followed by Joe Biden at 22%, Bernie Sanders at 14%, Pete Buttigieg at 7% and Kamala Harris at 5%.
Yang Raised $10 Million Last Quarter
“Andrew Yang raised $10 million in the third quarter of the year — a huge jump in support for the outsider Democratic presidential candidate,” Politico reports.
“The haul is more than triple the $2.8 million Yang raised in the second quarter, as he has started to outpace sitting senators and other elected officials in polls.”
Does Warren Have Room to Grow?
Nate Cohn: “Elizabeth Warren is gaining. She has breached 20 percent of the vote in recent national surveys and might hold a narrow lead in Iowa and New Hampshire. The prediction markets now consider her a clear favorite to win the nomination. It can be hard to see how her Democratic rivals will attack or stop her.”
“But the challenge facing Ms. Warren, if past primaries are any indication, isn’t those rivals. It is whether she will hit a wall: the rank and file of the Democratic primary electorate.”
Steyer Group to Target GOP Senators
“A group pushing for the impeachment of President Trump is launching a $3.1 million ad campaign targeting Republican senators over the coming weeks as pro-impeachment activists turn their fire away from Democratic holdouts and toward members of the president’s own party,” the Washington Post reports.
“The group, Need to Impeach, is funded mainly by billionaire Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer. Top executives said that more than half of the ad campaign money will go toward television spots, with the rest underwriting digital ads.”
“The campaign will focus on Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Joni Ernst (Iowa), Cory Gardner (Colo.) and Martha McSally (Ariz.), all of whom are seeking reelection next year.”
Warren and Biden In Dead Heat In New Hampshire
A new Saint Anselm College poll in New Hampshire finds Elizabeth Warren leads the Democratic field with 25%, followed by Joe Biden at 24%, Bernie Sanders at 11% and Pete Buttigieg at 10%.
All other candidates are in single digits.
Trump and RNC Raised $125 Million Last Quarter
President Trump and the Republican National Committee raised $125 million in the third quarter, a joint haul to help Trump and Republicans across the country, the Associated Press reports.
It’s Not Tenable to Decide Trump’s Fate at Ballot Box
Will Wilkinson: “This is no longer a tenable position. The president’s bungled bid to coerce Ukraine’s leader into helping the Trump 2020 re-election campaign smear a rival struck ‘decide it at the ballot box’ off the menu of reasonable opinion forever. Mr. Trump’s brazen attempt to cheat his way into a second term stands so scandalously exposed that there can be no assurance of a fair election if he’s allowed to stay in office. Resolving the question of the president’s fitness at the ballot box isn’t really an option, much less the best option, when the question boils down to whether the ballot box will be stuffed.”
“Impeachment is therefore imperative, not only to protect the integrity of next year’s elections but to secure America’s continued democratic existence. If the House does its job, it will fall to Senate Republicans to reveal, in their decision to convict (or not), their preferred flavor of republic: constitutional or banana.”
