Hochul Moves to Avoid Another Down-Ballot Disaster
“Two years ago, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) won her own race by a surprisingly narrow margin, and New York Republicans flipped three House seats. Now the New York governor is aiming to avoid another down-ballot disaster for Democrats in her home state,” Politico reports.
“Hochul, who struggled with early tactical fights in the state capital, is putting money and her own political clout on the line as she seeks to become a national surrogate for President Joe Biden and Democratic House candidates and ensure New York is a bulwark against another red wave.”
Tulsi Gabbard Won’t Be RFK Jr.’s Running Mate
Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) “has stopped cooperating” with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vice presidential vetting team, Politico reports.
“Instead, the former congresswoman, who left the Democratic Party, has turned her attention to former President Donald Trump’s candidacy. Gabbard recently hosted a fundraiser for the former president at his Mar-a-Lago club following last week’s Super Tuesday elections.”
High-Stakes Rematch Is Set
“President Biden and former President Donald Trump won enough delegates to become the presumptive nominees of their parties in the latest round of primary voting Tuesday, more definitively starting the clock on a bitter and costly eight-month general election campaign,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“For months there has been little uncertainty about their eventual selection—a pairing of elderly candidates most Americans don’t want.”
New York Times: “Tuesday’s results cleared the way for a 2024 general election campaign that, at just under eight months, is set to be one of the longest in modern American history and will be the country’s first presidential rematch in nearly 70 years.”
Washington Post: “Biden has sought to frame the election as a choice between two vastly different presidents, hoping to make the race as much of a referendum on Trump as on himself.”
Trump’s RNC Makeover Signals His Plans for 2025
Donald Trump’s “ousting of a huge chunk of the Republican National Committee’s staff is a preview of what he plans to do with federal agencies if he’s re-elected in November,” Axios reports.
Biden Formally Clinches Democratic Nomination
“President Joe Biden clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, clearing his path to a rematch with Donald Trump in November,” Politico reports.
GOP Candidate for Attorney General Can’t Practice Law
Trent Christensen (R), a candidate for Utah attorney general, “is not currently licensed to practice law in Utah but says he’s in the process of remedying his affiliation status ahead of the 2024 election,” the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
The Utah Constitution requires the attorney general to be in “good standing” with the state bar.
Aaron Rodgers and Jesse Ventura Top RFK Jr.’s Short List
“Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has recently approached the N.F.L. quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the former Minnesota governor and professional wrestler Jesse Ventura about serving as his running mate on an independent presidential ticket, and both have welcomed the overtures,” the Washington Post reports.
“Mr. Kennedy confirmed on Tuesday that the two men were at the top of his list.”

Senate Republicans Are All-In on Kari Lake
“Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), the chair of the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, will fundraise with Arizona Republican Kari Lake next month — a snapshot into the party’s full-court press to help elect the pro-Trump election denier,” Axios reports.
“Republicans view the Arizona opening as one of their top opportunities to gain a Senate seat in November, prompting every corner of the party to coalesce around Lake, despite her controversial past.”
Ken Buck Will Retire Early
Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) said he “will resign from Congress later this month rather than serve out the remainder of his term through 2024,” Axios reports.
Washington Post: “Once Buck departs, Republicans will outnumber Democrats 218 to 213 in the House. That means Republicans can afford to lose only two votes to pass legislation along party lines when everyone is attending and voting.”
The Serial Killer-Hunter Who Wants to Be Governor
Bloomberg: “Dave Reichert (R) is best known in Washington State for his two-decade pursuit of one of the country’s worst criminals: The Green River Killer, responsible for at least 49 murders. Reichert went from being the sheriff who helped catch the killer to becoming the rare Republican representing part of the Seattle suburbs in Congress.”
“Now he faces a bigger challenge: running to be the first Republican governor of the solidly blue state in more than 40 years.”
Biden Meets with Teamsters Leaders
“President Joe Biden met on Tuesday with leaders from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters as he tries to court the crucial union vote ahead of November,” CNN reports.

‘Honest Don’
In a Truth Social post, Donald Trump has given himself a nickname: “Honest Don.”
Trump Makes a Huge Mistake on Social Security
Dan Pfeiffer: “On issues that Trump is naive about — which includes everything other than what was said on Fox News in the previous hour — Donald Trump tends to vomit up incomprehensible word salad. When Trump says something this politically unwise, many of his apologists in the media portray comments more as a misstatement than a policy pronouncement. But that is very wrong.”
“In 2016, Trump repeatedly pledged to protect Medicare and Social Security, but then included budget cuts to Social Security and Medicare every year of his presidency. Monday’s comment was also not the first time that he expressed interest in cutting Social Security and Medicare. Here’s a montage of all the times Trump has called for these sorts of cuts.”
Trump Holds Lead in Georgia
A new Emerson College/The Hill poll in Georgia finds Donald Trump leading Joe Biden in the presidential race, 46% to 42% with 12% still undecided.
Twelve percent are undecided. When undecided voters are asked which candidate they lean toward, Trump’s support increases to 52% and Biden to 48%.
‘Uncommitted’ Is Running Out of Opportunities
Politico: “Tuesday’s primary in Washington state could be the last strong chance for voters to signal their opposition to Biden’s policies in the Middle East after a surge in ‘uncommitted’ votes last week led to its highest vote shares of the 2024 Democratic primary: 19 percent in Minnesota and 29 percent in Hawaii. Washington’s liberal voters could well deliver another eye-popping figure.”
“After that, however, the chances for ‘uncommitted’ voters to send a message to Biden and the Democratic Party are few and far between.”
Trump Vows to Free Imprisoned Capitol Rioters
Donald Trump vowed Monday to “free” January 6 rioters as one of his first acts if he’s elected for a second term in November, Axios reports.
