“But it also contains potential pitfalls that make it seem likely that the prosecutors will seek to bring additional charges in the weeks or months to come.”

Eric Adams Indicted

September 25, 2024 at 9:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Eric Adams, a retired police captain who was elected as New York City’s 110th mayor nearly three years ago on a promise to rein in crime, has been indicted following a federal corruption investigation,“ the New York Times reports.

“The indictment remained sealed on Wednesday night, and it was unclear what charge or charges Mr. Adams will face. But when they are made public, he will become the first New York City mayor to be criminally charged while in office.”

“The indictment promised to reverberate across the nation’s largest city and beyond, plunging Mr. Adams’s embattled administration further into chaos just months before he is set to face challengers in a hotly contested mayoral primary.”

Inquiry Into New York City Mayor Includes 6 Countries

September 23, 2024 at 8:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal prosecutors investigating whether Mayor Eric Adams conspired with the Turkish government to funnel illegal foreign donations into his campaign have recently sought information about interactions with five other countries,“ the New York Times reports.

“The demand for information related to the other countries — Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea and Uzbekistan — was made in expansive grand jury subpoenas issued in July to City Hall, the mayor and his campaign, the people said. The prosecutors’ focus on the other five countries has not been previously reported.”

“The full scope of the inquiry into the mayor is not publicly known, and it remains unclear why investigators were seeking information about the additional countries or whether Mr. Adams has had dealings with them.”

“Two high-ranking New York Fire Department chiefs were arrested early Monday and accused of accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to speed up the fire-safety approval process for building projects across the city,” the New York Times reports.

“There is no indication that the case is related to any of the four separate federal corruption investigations swirling around Mayor Eric Adams, his campaign and some of his most senior aides. The inquiry focused on the mayor is being conducted by the same agencies that investigated the chiefs.”

Eric Adams Faces Crisis as Probes Reach Inner Circle

September 6, 2024 at 5:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal agents on Wednesday zeroed in on the highest ranks of Mayor Eric Adams’s administration, searching a home and seizing the phones of the New York City police commissioner, the first deputy mayor, the schools chancellor and others,“ the New York Times reports.

“The actions were unrelated to a separate corruption inquiry focused on the mayor and his campaign fund-raising, some of the people said. But the revelation that not only the mayor but also many of the city’s most senior officials are embroiled in federal investigations further destabilizes an administration that is already reeling from other legal problems.”

“The investigations also raise questions about Mr. Adams’s ability to continue managing the nation’s largest city. And they threatened to further weaken his political standing as he faces a hotly contested Democratic primary next year in which he already was set to face several serious challengers.”

George Santos Prepares for Trial

August 13, 2024 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For months since his expulsion from Congress, George Santos has blithely stoked political intrigue on social media and sold customized videos of himself on Cameo,” the New York Times reports.

“Now, he is arguing that all that publicity could taint his criminal trial next month.”

“In a flurry of pretrial filings, Mr. Santos’s lawyers have argued that the federal judge overseeing the case must take extra steps to screen potential jurors with a lengthy written questionnaire, and then obscure their identities from the public, if the proceeding is to be fair.”
