Romney Calls Student Loan Gambit ‘Desperate’
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said President Biden consideration of forgiving student loan debt is a sign of desperation.
He added: “Other bribe suggestions: Forgive auto loans? Forgive credit card debt? Forgive mortgages? And put a wealth tax on the super-rich to pay for it all. What could possibly go wrong?”
Tennessee Lawmaker Suggests Burning Banned Books
Tennessee state Rep. Jerry Sexton (R) suggested burning books that are deemed “inappropriate” by a bill just passed by the legislature.
The bill now heads to Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) to be signed into law.
GOP Senators Would Block Canceling Student Debt
“Senate Minority Whip John Thune and a group of GOP senators are introducing a bill to ban President Biden from canceling student loan debt, amid news Biden is considering doing just that,” Fox News reports.
“The bill would also limit how long the administration can pause student debt payments and add congressional oversight to the process.”
Florida Man Asks School Districts to Ban the Bible
“A Florida activist known for his tongue-in-cheek petitions to local government agencies has asked school districts in Florida to ban the Bible,” NPR reports.
“His petitions cited a bill signed into law last month by Gov. Ron DeSantis, which lets parents object to educational materials. That bill came about after some parents complained about sexually explicit books being taught in Florida schools.”
Biden Signals He’s Open to Canceling Student Debt
“President Biden gave strong indications during a private meeting with House Democrats this week that his administration is poised to take significant action to relieve student loans in the coming months, a move that would likely include the cancellation of potentially tens of thousands of dollars in debt,” the Washington Post reports.
“Borrowers are currently benefiting from a moratorium on paying off their student loans until Aug. 31, a pandemic-induced pause that began under the Trump administration. The White House has come under considerable pressure from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party to outright cancel the liabilities.”
CBS News: “The move could affect more than 43 million borrowers who hold more than $1.6 trillion in federal student loan debt, the second-largest debt held by Americans, behind mortgages.”
Books Unbanned
“The Brooklyn Public Library is counteracting a ban on certain books by letting anyone in the US aged 13 to 21 apply for a digital library card. This gives teens and young adults, regardless of their location in the United States, access to the library’s entire ebook collection,” The Verge reports.
A Look Inside the Textbooks That Florida Rejected
New York Times: “Using online sample materials provided by publishers to Florida school districts, The New York Times was able to review 21 of the rejected books and see what may have led the state to reject them. Because Florida has released so few details about its textbook review process, it is unknown whether these examples led to the rejections. But they do illustrate the way in which these concepts appear — and don’t appear — in curriculum materials.”
“In most of the books, there was little that touched on race, never mind an academic framework like critical race theory.”
DeSantis Limits Tenure at Florida Universities
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “signed a bill that makes it harder for faculty at state universities to retain tenure, framing the legislation as another way that he and the Legislature are working to prevent educators from bringing their political views into the classroom,” the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Said DeSantis: “I think what tenure does, if anything, it’s created more of an intellectual orthodoxy. For people that have dissenting views, it becomes harder for them to be tenured in the first place and then, once you’re tenured, your productivity really declines, particularly in certain disciplines.”
Biden Aims to Expand Student-Loan Debt Forgiveness
“The Biden administration said it plans to make it easier for lower-income student-loan borrowers to get debt forgiveness through an existing program that has enrolled millions of people, but provided few with relief,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
CNN: Biden’s latest student debt move will bring 3.6 million borrowers closer to loan forgiveness.
Conservatives Push to Gut Public Library Boards
Washington Post: “Leaders have taken works as seemingly innocuous as the popular children’s picture book In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak off the shelves, closed library board meetings to the public and named Wallace the vice chair of a new library board stacked with conservative appointees — some of whom did not even have library cards.”
“A movement that started in schools has rapidly expanded to public libraries, accounting for 37 percent of book challenges last year, according to the American Library Association. Conservative activists in several states, including Texas, Montana and Louisiana have joined forces with like-minded officials to dissolve libraries’ governing bodies, rewrite or delete censorship protections, and remove books outside of official challenge procedures.”
Florida Bans Dozens of Math Text Books
“The Florida Department of Education announced it has rejected dozens of math textbooks submitted by publishers for schools, saying they “contained prohibited topics” including critical race theory,” Axios reports.
Key statistic: 54 out of 132 math books (41%) recently submitted for review in the state were found to be “impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics.”

School Reopening Mess Drives Parents Toward GOP
Wall Street Journal: “The defection of once-loyal voters like Ms. Loughran—along with disapproval from independents—is among the challenges Democrats face in their bid to retain control of Congress and win state-level races in this November’s midterm elections.”
“These voters say Democratic officials left pandemic restrictions in place too long and mishandled the health crisis, with devastating consequences for their children, while Republicans have generally pushed to minimize school closures and keep the economy open.”
Biden to Extend Student Loan Moratorium
The Biden administration plans to freeze federal student loan payments through Aug. 31, extending a moratorium that has allowed millions of Americans to postpone payments during the coronavirus pandemic, the AP reports.
