Kasich Lays Out Foreign Policy Vision

June 7, 2018 at 11:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

An article by Gov. John Kasich (R) in Foreign Affairs will only increase speculation that he’s laying the groundwork for another presidential bid:

Although American leaders should always put American interests first, that does not mean that we have to build walls, close off markets, or isolate the United States by acting in ways that alienate our allies. Continuing to do that will not insulate us from external challenges; it will simply turn us into bystanders with less and less influence. I choose cooperation and engagement. Only those who have forgotten the lessons of history can credibly contend that peace and prosperity await us inside ‘Fortress America.’”

Trump Not Consulting Officials Ahead of Summit

June 7, 2018 at 8:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “For decades, top presidential advisers have used a methodical process to hash out national security issues before offering the president a menu of options for key decisions. On an issue like North Korea, that would mean White House Situation Room gatherings of the secretaries of state and defense along with top intelligence officials, the United Nations ambassador, and even the treasury secretary, who oversees economic sanctions.”

“But since Trump agreed on a whim to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un on March 8, the White House’s summit planning has been unstructured… Trump himself has driven the preparation almost exclusively on his own, consulting little with his national security team outside of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.”

Reuters: “While the hawkish John Bolton – who has adopted a lower-key approach in recent days – is expected to be in Singapore for the talks on Tuesday, Pompeo has taken the lead as the administration assumes a softer tone toward Pyongyang ahead of the summit.”

Foreign Leaders Who Embraced Trump Now Feel Burned

June 7, 2018 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Foreign leaders are learning that hand-holding, golf games, military parades and other efforts to personally woo President Donald Trump do not guarantee that Trump won’t burn them on key policy issues.”

“Trump calls Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who visits the White House Thursday, his ‘good friend.’ French president Emmanuel Macron is a ‘great friend.’ And Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is a ‘great friend, neighbor, and ally.’ All have sought to butter up Trump through friendly face time, recognizing that the quickest way to the president’s heart is through his ego.”

“But all, to varying degrees, are exasperated with Trump.”

France Warns Trump It Won’t Sign G7 Statement

June 7, 2018 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“France has joined Germany in warning President Trump that it won’t sign a joint statement of the Group of 7 at the summit in Quebec this week without major concessions from the U.S.,” Bloomberg reports.

“President Emmanuel Macron has signaled that progress on tariffs, Iran nuclear agreement and Paris climate accord must be made before he’ll be willing to sign a joint statement… Macron has concluded that the other members of the G7 — the U.K., Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada — must stand up to the U.S. over Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico as well as other issues.”

Ian Bremmer tells Axios: “It will be the most dysfunctional g7 meeting — by a long margin — since its first in 1975. the Europeans, Japanese, and Canadians all feel like they’ve been wrong footed by the American president on trade.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

June 6, 2018 at 9:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

— State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, quoted by the New York Daily News, citing D-Day as proof of the United States’ strong ties to Germany.

Trump Invokes War of 1812 In Testy Call with Trudeau

June 6, 2018 at 1:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “had a testy phone call on May 25 over new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration targeting steel and aluminum imports coming from Canada, including one moment during the conversation in which Trump made an erroneous historical reference,” CNN reports.

“Trudeau pressed Trump on how he could justify the tariffs as a ‘national security’ issue. In response, Trump quipped to Trudeau, ‘Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?’ referring to the War of 1812.”

“The problem with Trump’s comments to Trudeau is that British troops burned down the White House during the War of 1812. Historians note the British attack on Washington was in retaliation for the American attack on York, Ontario, in territory that eventually became Canada, which was then a British colony.”

Secret Obama-Era License Let Iran Tap Dollars

June 6, 2018 at 8:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Obama administration secretly sought to give Iran access — albeit briefly — to the U.S. financial system by sidestepping sanctions kept in place after the 2015 nuclear deal, despite repeatedly telling Congress and the public it had no plans to do so,” the AP reports.

“An investigation by Senate Republicans released Wednesday sheds light on the delicate balance the Obama administration sought to strike after the deal, as it worked to ensure Iran received its promised benefits without playing into the hands of the deal’s opponents.”

Quote of the Day

June 5, 2018 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

— Russian President Vladimir Putin, quoted by Axios, on why there hasn’t been a U.S.-Russian summit meeting yet.

Trump’s Phone Call with Macron Was ‘Terrible’

June 4, 2018 at 8:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A call about trade and migration between President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron soured last week after Macron candidly criticized Trump’s policies, CNN reports.

Said one source: “Just bad. It was terrible. Macron thought he would be able to speak his mind, based on the relationship. But Trump can’t handle being criticized like that.”

How to Negotiate with North Korea

June 4, 2018 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Expect lies. Do your homework — because they will have. Choose your words very carefully. And have Job-like patience. Oh, and remember that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un considers himself a supreme being.”

“These are some of the tips offered by half a dozen of the select American diplomats who have actually sat face-to-face with North Korea’s mercurial and often maddening regime. They provide some guidance to President Donald Trump and his advisers as they prepare for a June 12 summit with Kim in Singapore aimed at convincing him to surrender his nuclear arsenal.”

New Russian Site Is Designed to Sway U.S. Voters

June 2, 2018 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

McClatchy: “A new Russian influence operation has surfaced that mirrors some of the activity of an internet firm that the FBI says was deeply involved in efforts to sway the 2016 U.S. elections, a cybersecurity firm says.”

“A website called usareally.com appeared on the internet May 17 and called on Americans to rally in front of the White House June 14 to celebrate President Trump’s birthday, which is also Flag Day… The website’s operators once worked out of the same office building in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency had its headquarters.”

U.S. Seeks Discreet Way to Pay for Kim Jong Un’s Hotel

June 1, 2018 at 7:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “At an island resort off the coast of Singapore, U.S. event planners are working day and night with their North Korean counterparts to set up a summit designed to bring an end to Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program. But a particularly awkward logistical issue remains unresolved… Who’s going to pay for Kim Jong Un’s hotel stay?”

“The prideful but cash-poor pariah state requires that a foreign country foot the bill at its preferred lodging: The Fullerton, a magnificent neoclassical hotel near the mouth of the Singapore River where just one presidential suite costs more than $6,000 per night.”

“When it comes to paying for lodging at North Korea’s preferred 5-star luxury hotel, the United States is open to covering the costs, the two people said, but it’s mindful that Pyongyang may view a U.S. payment as insulting. As a result, U.S. planners are considering asking the host country of Singapore to pay for the North Korean delegation’s bill.”

CIA Says North Korea Won’t Denuclearize

May 29, 2018 at 6:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A new U.S. intelligence assessment has concluded that North Korea does not intend to give up its nuclear weapons any time soon, three U.S. officials told NBC News — a finding that conflicts with recent statements by President Trump that Pyongyang intends to do so in the future.”

“President Trump is continuing to pursue a nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un even though the CIA analysis, which is consistent with other expert opinion, casts doubt on the viability of Trump’s stated goal for the negotiations, the elimination of North Korea’s nuclear weapons stockpile.”

“In an odd twist, a list of potential concessions by North Korea in the CIA analysis included the possibility that Kim Jong Un may consider offering to open a Western hamburger franchise in Pyongyang as a show of goodwill.”
