Most Republicans Still Oppose Gay Marriage

July 9, 2015 at 10:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

A new Reuters poll finds that 63% of Republicans oppose the Supreme Court’s backing of gay marriage, which gives hope for conservative presidential candidates who have come out strongly against marriage equality.

“When asked in general whether they support allowing same-sex couples to marry, 51% of Americans say they do, while 35 percent oppose it. Forty-eight percent of independent voters back gay marriage, making it difficult for a conservative Republican to win general election votes on the issue.”

Brownback Issues Executive Order on ‘Religious Liberty’

July 8, 2015 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) issued an executive order “prohibiting state government from taking action against clergy members or religious organizations that deny services to couples based on religious beliefs,” the Wichita Eagle reports.

“Among other things, the order is intended to protect religious organizations that provide adoption services for the state from having to place children with gay couples if that conflicts with their beliefs.”

New York Times: “The order comes nearly two weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, paving the way for gay couples to marry across the country. It is the latest sign that the battle has shifted to the issue of religious liberties, and how much leeway people of faith have to opt out of providing services to or recognizing gay unions.”

Lawmaker Wants to Debate Gay Marriage Instead of Flag

July 6, 2015 at 1:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 46 Comments

During a debate over the Confederate flag, South Carolina state Sen. Lee Bright (R) lost it over “this gay marriage thing” which he said would cause us to be “one nation gone under,” according to Gawker.

Said Bright: “We can rally together and talk about a flag all we want, but the devil is taking control of this land and we’re not stopping him!”

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) family disagrees with his hardline stance on same-sex marriage, his wife told the Washington Post.

Said Tonette Walker: “That was a hard one. Our sons were disappointed… I was torn. I have children who are very passionate [in favor of same-sex marriage], and Scott was on his side very passionate.”

Cruz Says States Should Ignore Gay Marriage Ruling

June 30, 2015 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 64 Comments

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told NPR that states should ignore the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.

Said Cruz: “Those who are not parties to the suit are not bound by it… The parties to a case cannot ignore a direct judicial order, but it does not mean that those who are not parties to a case are bound by a judicial order.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

“Just who do they think they are when one person can reverse 200-and-something years of precedent in our country and thousands of years of precedent in western civilization?”

— Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore (R), quoted by the Associated Press, on the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage.

Gay Marriage Threatens to Divide Republicans Further

June 29, 2015 at 9:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 22 Comments

Rick Klein: “If you’re going to start over, it helps to agree on a new place to begin. There’s a hope among some Republicans that the end of the nation’s gay-marriage debate wipes the slate clean on social issues, after a first half of the year where liberals seemed to be running up the score. The responses from GOP contenders on gay marriage are varied, though they don’t run the full gamut: All of the 16 major candidates continue to oppose something that, as of Friday, is a constitutional right.”

“From there, there’s Jeb Bush, John Kasich, and Marco Rubio suggesting that the Supreme Court has effectively settled the argument, with their focus now turning to protecting religious liberty ins this context. You have Scott Walker among those backing a constitutional amendment, Ted Cruz wanting a new process to oust justices, and Bobby Jindal suggesting we should shut the Supreme Court down altogether. Then there’s Mike Huckabee, who said on ABC’s This Week that ‘I’m not sure that every governor and every attorney general’ should simply comply with the court’s edict.

“These are more than different shadings; these are conflicting takes on a matter of major social policy where the Supreme Court has ruled – and a majority of Americans agree. Is there any scenario where this doesn’t get ugly inside a free-wheeling Republican primary – to say nothing of what that might do to the eventual nominee for the general election?”

Texas Attorney General Bucks Gay Marriage Ruling

June 29, 2015 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 59 Comments

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a written opinion that county clerks in Texas “who have religious objections to same-sex marriage can opt out of issuing such licenses — but they should be prepared to face fines or legal challenges,” the Texas Tribune reports.

“In the opinion, which is meant to serve as guidance for clerks and public officials now that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, Paxton said that pro bono lawyers are ready to help such gay marriage opponents defend their decisions.”

Huckabee Wouldn’t Enforce Gay Marriage Decision

June 28, 2015 at 1:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

Mike Huckabee suggested that if he were elected president in 2016, he would decline to enforce the Supreme Court decision finding a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Hcukabee: “I would say, when the Congress provides enabling legislation and the people’s representatives vote and it gets to my desk, then we’ll consider it. This was done through a court edict of five unelected lawyers, a part of a committee, who decided that they knew better than the legislators.”

Jindal Says Gay Marriage Is a Religious Liberty Issue

June 28, 2015 at 1:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 38 Comments

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) said that his state will comply with the Supreme Court’s order legalizing same-sex marriage, Politico reports.

Said Jindal: “We don’t have a choice. Our agencies will comply with the court order.”

But he added: “I think it is wrong for the federal government to force Christian individuals, businesses, pastors, churches, to participate in wedding ceremonies that violate our sincerely held religious beliefs. We have to stand up and fight for religious liberty. That’s where this fight is going.”

Conservative Pundit Tears Up Over Gay Marriage Decision

June 27, 2015 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 27 Comments

Conservative pundit S.E. Cupp: “It’s hard not to watch that and get emotional. Those people there are not pariahs, they’re patriots.”

She added: “And so for my party — which I deeply, deeply love — my party really has to reconcile with the fact that we are going to become relics if we don’t get to where these people are.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

June 27, 2015 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

“The Supreme Court is completely out of control, making laws on their own, and has become a public opinion poll instead of a judicial body. If we want to save some money lets just get rid of the court.”

— Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), quoted by the Baton Rouge Advocate, in response to the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing gay marriage across the country.

Quote of the Day

June 27, 2015 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 96 Comments

“Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved. Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them. And those denied governmental benefits certainly do not lose their dignity because the government denies them those benefits. The government cannot bestow dignity, and it cannot take it away.”

— Justice Clarence Thomas, in his dissenting opinion on same-sex marriage.

GOP Hopefuls Denounce Gay Marriage Ruling

June 27, 2015 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 25 Comments

“Across the country, among people of all ages and religions, the acceptance of same-sex marriage has grown with stunning speed. But not in the leadership of the Republican Party,” the New York Times reports.

“There is a striking unanimity among the candidates who are running for the party’s presidential nomination in 2016: Not one supports allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry. And after the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a right to marriage for all couples, regardless of their sexual orientation, the degree of difference among the candidates was largely a matter of how aggressively they would continue to resist.”

Two States Still Resisting Gay Marriage Ruling

June 27, 2015 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“Within hours of the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, gay couples were exercising what the justices said is their constitutional right to marry in states that have long denied them. Of the 14 states where such unions were illegal prior to the ruling, all but two have allowed marriages to proceed,” the Washington Post reports.

“In Louisiana, the attorney general’s office said in a statement that it found ‘nothing in today’s decision that makes the Court’s order effective immediately.’ There have not yet been reports that same-sex marriage licenses have been granted anywhere in the state. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood instructed residents that the Supreme Court decision doesn’t yet apply to the state because Mississippi is entangled in a legal order from an ongoing gay marriage lawsuit.”

Gay Marriage Upheld by Supreme Court

June 26, 2015 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 263 Comments

“In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage,” the New York Times reports.

“The 5-to-4 decision, the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of same-sex marriage. As in earlier civil rights cases, the Supreme Court had moved cautiously and methodically, laying careful judicial groundwork for a transformative decision.”

Wall Street Journal: “The opinion by Justice Anthony Kennedy caps a rapid shift in legal and societal acceptance of same-sex marriage over the past decade. It also marks a revolution in American society, one that in the course of a generation saw gay rights move to the front line from the fringes of a national debate over the meaning of equality.”
