“The U.S. will begin sharing its entire pipeline of vaccines from AstraZeneca once the COVID-19 vaccine clear federal safety reviews, with as many as 60 million doses expected to be available for export in the coming months,” the AP reports.
Time to End Outdoor Mask Edicts
Former FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb writes in the Wall Street Journal that the U.S. should drop outdoor mask mandates:
“Wearing masks and restricting large gatherings were essential to controlling the pandemic’s worst peaks. But infection levels are dropping and vaccination rates rising. This is the time to revisit rules on masking and distancing in low-risk outdoor settings like parks and sports venues. Easing these rules would move more activity outdoors, which reduces viral transmission.”
Concerns Over J&J Vaccine Are Still Widespread
A new ABC News-Washington Post poll finds just 22% of Americans not yet immunized against the coronavirus say they would be willing to get the vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson.
Kamala Harris Urges Preparation for Next Pandemic
“Vice President Kamala Harris will make the case before United Nations members on Monday that now is the time for global leaders to begin putting the serious work into how they will respond to the next global pandemic,” the AP reports
State Lawmaker Banned from Alaska Airlines
Alaska Airlines told the Anchorage Daily News that State Senator Lora Reinbold (R) has been banned from its flights for refusing to follow mask-wearing rules.
There’s no overland road access from Reinbold’s district to the state capital in Juneau and Alaska Air provides the only airline service. That means if Reinbold wants to travel to the capital, the trip will take roughly three days, including a part by boat.
A video shows Reinbold arguing with airport staff about wearing a mask.
Millions Are Skipping Their Second Vaccine Shot
More than 5 million people have skipped their second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, the New York Times reports.
“The reasons vary for why people are missing their second shots. In interviews, some said they feared the side effects, which can include flulike symptoms. Others said they felt that they were sufficiently protected with a single shot.”
Panel Urges Restart of J&J Vaccine
“A U.S. health panel says it’s time to resume use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine, despite a very rare risk of blood clots,” the AP reports.
“Out of nearly 8 million people vaccinated before the U.S. suspended J&J’s shot, health officials uncovered 15 cases of a highly unusual kind of blood clot, three of them fatal.”
Even Record Death Toll May Hide Extent of India’s Crisis
Bloomberg: “Bodies piling up at crematoriums and burial grounds across India are sparking concerns that the death toll from a ferocious new Covid-19 wave may be much higher than official records, underplaying the scale of a resurgence that is overwhelming the country’s medical system.”
Reuters reports that hospitals in northern and western India, including the capital, New Delhi, were full and running out of oxygen.
Ron Johnson Questions ‘Big Push’ To Get Vaccinated
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) declared that he sees “no reason to be pushing vaccines on people,” arguing their distribution should be “limited” to those most vulnerable to coronavirus, and asking, “if you have a vaccine, quite honestly, what do you care if your neighbor has one or not?,” Forbes reports.
Johnson said he is “getting highly suspicious” of the “big push to make sure everybody gets the vaccine,” stating it’s “not a fully approved vaccine.”
Drop In Vaccine Demand Seen Across U.S.
Associated Press: “The dwindling demand for vaccines illustrates the challenge that the U.S. faces in trying to conquer the pandemic while at the same time dealing with the optics of tens of thousands of doses sitting on shelves when countries like India and Brazil are in the midst of full-blown medical emergencies.”
“More than half of American adults have received at least one vaccine dose, and President Joe Biden this week celebrated eclipsing 200 million doses administered in his first 100 days in office. He also acknowledged entering a new phase to bolster outreach and overcome hesitancy.”
How Israel Got Skeptics Vaccinated
NPR: “As Israel raced forward this winter and spring with its world-leading COVID-19 vaccination campaign, it waged an aggressive and largely successful campaign to confront false rumors and hesitancy about the COVID-19 vaccine among devout ultra-Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish communities, among the hardest hit by the virus in Israel.”
“Today, more than half of all Israelis have been vaccinated — including 80% of ultra-Orthodox adults over age 30, the health ministry says.”
The Vaccines Are Working
“It is easy to feel as if the coronavirus pandemic is getting out of control again. The rate of new cases hit a record last week, with 5.2m people around the world getting infected,” the Financial Times reports.
“But the flurry of depressing headlines cannot disguise one thing: it is now clear that the vaccines are working. In countries where cases have been falling in recent months, the vaccines have saved lives. And in countries that are still struggling to suppress a third or fourth wave, the vaccines have also saved lives.”
“An FT analysis of data from five countries — each facing very different scenarios — finds that rates of infections, hospitalization and death have traced a lower path among the older, most vaccinated age groups than among younger cohorts, who are least likely to have received the jab. This is regardless of the viral caseload — whether infections are rising or falling, or if a country is grappling with one of the new variants.”
U.S. Likely to Resume Use of J&J Vaccine
“Federal health authorities are leaning toward recommending that use of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine resume, possibly as soon as this weekend — a move that would include a new warning about a rare complication involving blood clots but probably not call for age restrictions,” the Washington Post reports.
Rand Paul Wants Biden to Burn a Mask on TV
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to Fox News: “If you want more people to get vaccinated, Joe Biden should go on national TV, take his mask off and burn it.”
He added: “Light a torch to it and burn his mask and say, ‘I’ve had the vaccine, I am now safe from this plague. If you get the vaccine, you can be safe, too.'”
U.S. Sees Unprecedented Drop In Vaccinations
Washington Post: “About 3 million Americans are getting vaccinated daily, an 11 percent decrease in the seven-day average of daily shots administered over the past week. The unprecedented drop is rivaled only by a brief falloff that occurred in February, when winter storms forced the closure of vaccination sites and delayed shipments nationwide.”
How the White House Hopes to Get Skeptics Vaccinated
Time: “Officials have said that when it comes to persuasion, they have to make sure their efforts won’t exacerbate skepticism. Their strategy largely hinges on channelling talking points and funding to community leaders who they hope will have more sway with many Americans than the federal government.”
Said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki: “We recognize that the President, that all of us, may not be exactly the right messengers for some of these audiences.”
Biden Offers Incentives For Employees to Get Vaccinated
Bloomberg: “President Joe Biden called on employers to use a tax credit to provide paid time off to workers to get vaccinated and for businesses to do more to boost the inoculation effort as the U.S. seeks to get shots in more arms.”
Biden to Speak on Vaccination Efforts
“President Biden plans to deliver a speech Wednesday on his administration’s efforts to combat covid-19 and the current state of vaccinations,” the Washington Post reports.
“The speech comes amid signs of hope and concern in the nationwide effort to vaccinate people as quickly as possible. More than 40 percent of the U.S. population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, and many states have recently picked up the pace at which they are getting shots into arms.”
