Extra Bonus Quote of the Day
“Here’s the real problem with the so-called Build Back Better bill. It’s communism. America was never meant to be a communist country.”
— Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), quoted by The Hill.
House Passes $1.75 Trillion Social Spending Bill
In another impressive accomplishment by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the House of Representatives passed the $1.75 trillion Build Back Better Act, 220 to 213.
Pelosi offered praise for President Biden, saying that without his leadership, “none of this could’ve been possible.”
The bill will now head for consideration in the Senate.
Quote of the Day
“If you took the worst orator in the world, gave him the worst speech in the world, and made him read it for the longest time in the world. That would be a lot like listening to Kevin McCarthy tonight.”
“Except, probably better.”
— Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), on Twitter.
McCarthy Delays Swift Passage of Social Spending Bill
“House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) delayed quick passage of Democrats’ social spending and climate change package late Thursday night by holding the floor for more than two hours in a filibuster-style speech,” The Hill reports.
Washington Post: “McCarthy used the address to attack Democrats over a broad range of issues, including border security and Afghanistan policy — prompting jeers from Democrats, some of whom left as he spoke.”
Trump Endorses Paul Gosar
A day after Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) was censured by the House and stripped of his committee assignments, former President Donald Trump issued a statement giving the Arizona congressman his “Complete and Total Endorsement!”
CBO Estimate on Reconciliation Bill Coming Today
The Congressional Budget Office announced it will publish a complete cost estimate for the Build Back Better Act this afternoon.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said a House vote on the legislation could happen soon after.
McCarthy Pledges to Restore Gosar and Greene
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) suggested that Reps. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) should expect to be on committees if Republicans take the House majority, NBC News reports.
Said McCarthy: “They’ll have committees. They may have other committee assignments. They may have better committee assignments.”
Meadows Suggests Trump Should Be Speaker
Former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows told Steve Bannon that he would like to see Donald Trump become Speaker of the House.
Said Meadows: “You talk about melting down… people would go crazy!”
Playbook: “Comments like Meadows’ are starting to reveal a growing frustration with McCarthy in Trump’s orbit.”
There’s No Decency Left In the GOP Caucus
First Read: “We’ll state it plainly: Just 10 months removed from Jan. 6, there is no collective political decency on Capitol Hill. Especially when one political party can’t or won’t police violent images by its own members.”
“Sure, vigorously debate the size of government, the state of the economy, abortion, foreign policy and taxes. But when one party tolerates a member posting violent images against the political opposition, or engages in ‘whataboutism’ as a defense, or is upset the political opposition is taking action when it refused to do so — civility is gone.”
“Just look at McCarthy’s own evolution: He’s gone from condemning misbehavior by his own members (Steve King) and speaking out about Donald Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 (saying the former president “bears responsibility” for the attack), to ignoring certain actions (Marjorie Taylor Greene) and now rationalizing them (Gosar).”
“And the next logical step becomes actively condoning the misbehavior.”
Gaetz Says Kyle Rittenhouse Would Make a Good Intern
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) told Newsmax he might hire Kyle Rittenhouse to work in his congressional office.
Said Gaetz: “He is not guilty. He deserves a not guilty verdict, and I sure hope he gets it because you know what? Kyle Rittenhouse would probably make a pretty good congressional intern. We may reach out to him and see if he’d be interested in helping the country in additional ways.”
Mark Meadows Slams Kevin McCarthy
Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows ripped the House GOP leadership for not opposing President Biden’s agenda firmly enough, Politico reports.
Said Meadows on Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) podcast: “You need to make Democrats take tough votes. You need to make sure that when you’ve got them on the ropes that you don’t throw in the white towel and surrender. And that’s what’s happened. We saw it with the infrastructure vote a few weeks ago… If you’re going to be the speaker of the House, you’ve got to be able to control those members and those members with particular positions of authority.”
“Meadows is also calling for the 13 Republicans to face consequences, including stripping them of any ranking member roles on committees — which members of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus have also pushed.”
Republican Senators Appalled by House GOP Infighting
“Republican senators are expressing shock and disbelief that conservative allies of former President Trump in the House threatened to strip colleagues who voted for the $1 trillion infrastructure bill of their committee assignments,” The Hill reports.
Gosar Reposts Video After Censure, Then Deletes It
Nick Martin: “Before his censure, Congressman Paul Gosar made a big deal about having deleted the anime video depicting him killing AOC. Others in the Republican Party cited the deletion as a sign of good faith. Now, after the censure, Gosar has reposted the same video.”
And then: “And it’s gone. Congressman Paul Gosar took the anime video down again, this time after leaving it up for two hours.”
Feds Have GOP Congressman on Tape
Lawyers for indicted Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) acknowledged that “the government made at least two recordings of the sitting congressman over the course of its investigation surrounding illicit campaign contributions from a Nigerian-Lebanese billionaire,” the Daily Beast reports.
“The prosecution said in a filing that the recordings in question—a 2018 conversation with a government informant, and a 2019 interview with an agent in Fortenberry’s Nebraska home—are only two among more than 50 audio and video recordings they have turned over to the defense team. And those dozens of recordings are supplemented by more than 11,600 pages of ‘written communications, reports, transcripts, articles, and other records,’ the federal attorneys said.”
Bonus Quote of the Day
“It is such a gross grab of power to think you can tell other people what you have to do with your own body.”
— Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI), speaking on the House floor about mask mandates, apparently forgetting he wants to ban women from having abortions.
House GOP Can’t Get Out of Its Own Way
Politico: “Ahead of a vote on Democrats’ biggest agenda item, the GOP conference is embroiled in messy internal spats that have spilled into public view, including the censure Wednesday of a far-right House member, the first such vote in more than a decade. At the same time, some rank-and-file Republicans are still pushing to punish their own colleagues for backing a bipartisan bill reviled by former President Donald Trump.”
“That turmoil is no longer an anomaly for the GOP. The party’s emboldened conservative agitators have repeatedly stoked controversies that threaten to become all-consuming distractions, leaving House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to seek out a fire extinguisher. The recurring problem could hurt the party as it works to claw back the majority next year.”
House Votes to Censure Paul Gosar
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) was censured by the House of Representatives and removed from his committee assignments in response to his sharing an anime video depicting him killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-AZ) and attacking President Biden, 223 to 210.
Every Democrat and just two Republicans — Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) — voted in favor of the measure.
Gosar was forced to stand in the well of the House while the resolution was read out loud.
