Congress Votes to Make Juneteenth a Federal Holiday
“Congress on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday, elevating the day marking the end of slavery in Texas to a national commemoration of emancipation amid a larger reckoning about America’s turbulent history with racism,” the Washington Post reports.
“It is the first new federal holiday created by Congress since 1983, when lawmakers voted to establish Martin Luther King Jr. Day after a 15-year fight to commemorate the assassinated civil rights leader.”
The Hill: 14 Republicans vote against making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Bonus Quote of the Day
“So, the critical race theory — and I can’t think of the author right off the top of my head who wrote about this — really had a theory that, at the high level, is one that really starts creating those divisions between us about defining who we are based on race and that sort of thing and really not about how to bring us together as Americans rather than — and dividing us and also having a lot of very socialist-type ideas about how that would be implemented in our state.”
— Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R), when asked to define “critical race theory” on his monthly call-in radio show.
Texas Bans ‘Critical Race Theory’ Without Defining It
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed a bill to ban teaching “critical race theory” in schools but the legislation never defined or mentioned the concept explicitly, the Dallas Morning News reports.
GOP Lawmaker Struggles to Define Critical Race Theory
Alabama state Rep. Chris Pringle (R) was asked to define “critical race theory,” which he seeks to make illegal to teach in schools.
Said Pringle: “It basically teaches that certain children are inherently bad people because of the color of their skin, period.”
When asked for an example, Pringle replied: “These people, when they were doing the training programs — and the government — if you didn’t buy into what they taught you a hundred percent, they sent you away to a reeducation camp.”
Critical Race Theory Battle Invades School Boards
NBC News: “Virtually all school districts insist they are not teaching critical race theory, but many activists and parents have begun using it as a catch-all term to refer to what schools often call equity programs, teaching about racism or LGBTQ-inclusive policies.”
“Now, conservative activists are setting their sights on ousting as many school board members as they can, and local Republican Parties have vowed to help, viewing the revolt against critical race theory as akin to the tea party wave from a decade ago.”
Juneteenth Holiday Has the Votes But Not the Floor Time
HuffPost: “Legislation establishing June 19 as a federal holiday already has 60 co-sponsors in the Senate, including a remarkable 18 Republicans, meaning the bill could easily overcome a filibuster and become law.”
“But with June 19 coming this Saturday, Democrats have not announced any plans for a vote, presumably because it would consume precious Senate floor time and Democrats have a lot of other priorities.”
Judge Halts Debt Relief Program for Farmers of Color
“A federal judge halted payments for a loan forgiveness program that provides relief to agricultural producers of color,” the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
The conservative Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty “alleged that the Biden administration used an unconstitutional program in an effort to end systemic racism and should make the relief available to white farmers, too.”
Oregon Removes Racist Lyrics from State Song
The Oregon Legislature approved changes to the lyrics of Oregon’s state song to make them more inclusive and to remove racist language, the Oregonian reports.
GOP Sweeps In Texas Shows Hispanic Support for GOP
National Review: “Republicans swept key races for mayor in Texas on Saturday, setting back Democratic hopes that the state’s urban areas will deliver statewide majorities for them in the future. Most shocking: In McAllen, Texas, a border city of 150,000 people of which 85 percent are Hispanic, Republicans elected their first mayor ever.”
White Identity Politics Underpin GOP’s 2022 Pitch
“With or without Donald Trump atop the party, the Republican strategy for the 2022 elections and beyond virtually assures race — and racism — will be central to political debate for years to come,” Axios reports.
“In an era when every topic seems to turn quickly to race, Republicans see this most divisive issue as either political necessity or an election-winner — including as it relates to voting laws, critical race theory, big-city crime, immigration and political correctness.”
Solemn Remembrances of a Century-Old Race Massacre
“On the 100th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, survivors and descendants gathered Monday at Standpipe Hill, where Black World War I veterans fought fiercely in a battle to hold off a White mob descending on the all-Black neighborhood of Greenwood,” the Washington Post reports.
“They collected soil from the steep slope to honor the victims of one of the worst episodes of racial violence in U.S. history. As many as 300 Black people were killed in the race massacre, which began on May 31, 1921, and raged into the following day, destroying 35 square blocks of one of the most prosperous Black communities in the country.”

“A Trump appointee serving on West Point’s advisory board has repeatedly spread a conspiracy that the Biden administration is bringing in non-White immigrants as part of a ‘grand plan’ to have them outnumber White Americans of European ancestry in the United States,” CNN reports.
“He also attacked women serving in the military in combat roles.”
Spain Postal Service’s Anti-Racism Campaign Backfires
“Spain’s postal service prompted widespread criticism this week after introducing skin-tone stamps — with the lightest ones being the most valuable — and promoting them as part of an anti-racism campaign,” the Washington Post reports.
From a news release: “The darker the stamp, the less value it will have. Therefore, when making a shipment, it will be necessary to use more black stamps than white ones. That way, each letter and each shipment will become a reflection of the inequality created by racism.”
Latino Upside Highest for Dems In Texas, North Carolina
An analysis done by Voto Latino, and provided to the Washington Post, “showed that during the 2020 election, the group collected 617,714 complete voter registration applications — a 123% percent increase over their projected goal for the cycle.”
Said María Teresa Kumar, CEO of Voto Latino: “The younger Latinx was a larger share of the overall Latino electorate, the state swung for Biden: Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. If this trend holds true: Texas and North Carolina will be next in play as younger Latinos eclipse older generations.”
She added: “Florida, where the Latino vote share is older, will be harder to flip.”
