Trump’s Epstein Letter Is the Final Test

September 9, 2025 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Egger: “In a way, Donald Trump and his allies have spent their entire political lives preparing for this moment. The whole miserable decade of ‘alternative facts,’ of witch hunts, of flooding the zone with shit—it all amounted to a long, powerful education for his base. It’s a training in a certain kind of zen meditation, in which stories damaging to Trump pass from the eyes and ears directly out of the body without ever intersecting the brain. By now, the base has gotten in their 10,000 hours. They’ve become masters of the craft. They can perform all sorts of remarkable feats—the media-cope equivalent of lying on beds of nails while cinderblocks are smashed on their chests. These cinderblocks, they whisper serenely, are just a liberal plot. If I pay attention, the Democrats win.”

“This Epstein story might as well be their final test. They’ve clamored for years for more information about Epstein’s sexual-deviant associates—and here Trump is, wallowing in that muck of perversity, clear as day. Trump plainly thinks he’s got them well trained enough that he doesn’t even need to find a good cover story. They’re ready to excuse him all on their own.”

Trump’s Birthday Letter to Epstein Released

September 8, 2025 at 3:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Lawyers for Jeffrey Epstein’s estate have given Congress a copy of the birthday book put together for the financier’s 50th birthday, which includes a letter with Trump’s signature that he has said doesn’t exist,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA): “President Trump called the Epstein investigation a hoax and claimed that his birthday note didn’t exist. Now we know that Donald Trump was lying and is doing everything he can to cover up the truth. Enough of the games and lies, release the full files now.”

In all the coverage of this, only the Wall Street Journal has the picture — an indication they had it all along.

“The Jeffrey Epstein scandal will lead the news again this afternoon, much to the dismay of the White House and House GOP leaders. And President Donald Trump is in the middle of it all, as always,” Punchbowl News reports.

“The Epstein estate is expected to release the disgraced financier’s 2003 ‘birthday book’ and additional documents to the House Oversight Committee today.”

“Trump penned a congratulatory note and a picture of a hand-drawn naked woman to Epstein for his 50th birthday… Trump has denied writing the letter or sketching out the drawing, calling it a ‘fake thing.'”

No Outreach to Epstein Victims Despite Trump’s Vow

September 7, 2025 at 8:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For more than six months, Donald Trump and his justice department have insisted they would get to the bottom of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, but nine attorneys – who have represented approximately 50 Epstein survivors – told the Guardian they have not been recently contacted by the justice department.”

“The revelation casts doubt on the effort by the Trump administration to fully investigate Epstein’s crimes and activities and reveal everything that the government knows about him.”

The Story Trump Can’t Kill

September 3, 2025 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “You could almost forget, amid the political feeding frenzy this summer over the non-release of the Epstein files, that at the heart of this case lie the most heinous crimes imaginable.”

“That stark reality will be brought jarringly back into focus here in D.C. this morning when we hear directly from 10 of Jeffrey Epstein’s survivors in what should be a remarkable news conference on the steps of the Capitol.”

The Bulwark: “Six weeks ago, Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House of Representatives into recess early to dodge some uncomfortable votes about the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. But the unfortunate thing about recess is you’ve got to return eventually—and with Congress back in session, the Epstein story is grinding ahead again.”

Tara Palmeri: “This moment in D.C. is a real inflection point. Will survivors push Republicans into a corner, forcing them to stand up for transparency? After all, who wants to be on record voting against the release of files—hiding behind claims of ‘protection’ that are just gaslighting, sweeping the truth under the rug. It’s a classic move in sexual-assault cases.”

Exchange of the Day

September 3, 2025 at 9:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News anchor Hallie Jackson interviewed a group of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims:

JACKSON: Show of hands, who would like to see President Trump definitively rule out a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, every single one of you, Marikje, are you frustrated he hasn’t done so yet?

MARIJKE CHARTOUNI: Oh, absolutely, yeah. I mean, just toying with the idea is an insult.

JACKSON: What would you say to the President if he could hear you right now about this, about the potential part, and about the case, about all of this that’s in the ether right now?

MARIJKE CHARTOUNI: I would ask why he’s putting so much attention on the criminals and why he seems to value them more than us.

JACKSON: Does anybody else have thoughts on that?

AMANDA ROBERTS: I would say it’s so big right now because this administration ran their campaign on this. These were promises that they had made, and, and, and if you’re in that level and in that capacity, it’s your diligence, it’s your duty to do what your constituents, what your the American public, is asking you for. So that’s all we’re asking.

JESS MICHAELS: And it’s, it’s not just one side or the other. This is a non-partisan issue. Everyone is asking, even his base is asking.

JACKSON: Has anyone heard from anybody at the White House or any of their representatives?

GROUP: No.

Jeffrey Epstein Continues to Haunt GOP Leaders

September 2, 2025 at 1:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “It’s Day One of the post-summer session of Congress, and the House Republican leadership is already dealing with the Jeffrey Epstein issue it hoped to leave behind.”

“Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) announced he will file his discharge petition at 2 p.m., forcing the release of the Justice Department’s Epstein files. Members will be able to sign the petition beginning today.”

“If every House Democrat signs – which we expect – just six Republicans would be needed to force a vote on the measure. And that’s practically guaranteed to happen.”

“This would be a big blow to Speaker Mike Johnson and the House Republican leadership.”

Bipartisan Group Pushes for Vote on Epstein Files

September 2, 2025 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Expect the discharge petition standoff to come to a head this week. Rep. Thomas Massie said he and Rep. Ro Khanna will start the process of forcing a vote ‘immediately’ now that lawmakers are back.”

Said Massie: “This has not gone away like the speaker had hoped. If anything, now that the DOJ is releasing documents, it’s increasing the momentum.”

“Rep. Riley Moore, a West Virginia Republican, indicated over recess that he will support the discharge petition, adding to Massie’s confidence that they can gather the necessary 218 signatures. The GOP dissent threatens Speaker Mike Johnson’s control over the House as the shutdown deadline approaches.”

A Watergate Everyday

August 27, 2025 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Garrett Graff: “One of the hardest things to do in the modern moment is keep up with the daily slog of scandals and corruption unfolding in this administration — sometimes in broad daylight in front of cameras in the Oval Office. On the one hand, it’s just too much for the media to cover, but there’s also a bigger problem: The media does a terrible job noticing them as the scandals go by. I think often of Steve Bannon’s infamous quote: ‘The real opposition is the media. And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.'”

“Almost every day there’s a scandal that just skates by that in any other moment of presidential history would launch endless follow-up stories, congressional investigations, and sink an administration.”
