Ivanka’s Grand Plan

January 11, 2017 at 7:44 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “Following her decision not to take a formal White House role, Ivanka Trump plans to stay out of the spotlight for a few months as her family moves to D.C., hoping the temperature goes down on nepotism questions involving her husband, Jared Kushner. But then she’ll begin taking high-profile stands on policies aimed at women’s entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. A well-wired source tells me her focus will be consistent with her brand: issues affecting women who work, including family leave and equal pay.”

“Behind the scenes, Ivanka is moving to put a high-powered, high-level staffer inside the White House to help her cause. My sources tell me her first and likely choice is Goldman Sachs exec Dina Powell, who runs the firm’s 10,000 Women and 10,000 Small Businesses, and was in charge of presidential personnel for George W. Bush.”

Russia Says It Has No Compromising Material on Trump

January 11, 2017 at 7:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Russia “denied it has compromising material on Donald Trump, calling a dossier of unverified allegations an ‘absolute fabrication’ and an attempt to damage U.S.-Russian relations,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov: “This is a clear attempt to damage our bilateral relations. Truly, there are those who whip up this hysteria, who will break their necks to support this ‘witch hunt'”

He added that “the Kremlin wasn’t involved in collecting compromising information on anyone, including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.”

Mike Allen: “Just asking: Would they really tell us if they had the goods on the president-elect?”

Trump Will Finally Hold a News Conference

January 11, 2017 at 7:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When President-Elect Donald Trump meets the press on Wednesday — for his first formal news conference in 168 days—the most intriguing questions may not be about Russia, or his business conflicts, or his son-in-law’s prospective job, but about the interactions between Trump and the press,” Politico reports.

“How contentious will the questions be? How respectful—or disdainful—will Trump be toward his inquisitors? Will this event signal the new president’s willingness to hold regular news conferences, or a swan song for a 55-year old institution?”

CNN: 10 questions for Donald Trump

The news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET in New York City.

GOP Relents and Delays Hearings for 4 Trump Nominees

January 11, 2017 at 6:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans, under increasing pressure to ensure that President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees are fully vetted by federal authorities, have delayed the hearings of four potential cabinet members, three of whom have not been cleared by the agency charged with unraveling potential conflicts of interest,” the New York Times reports.

“As frustrations over confirmations grow, a group that supports Republicans accused the ethics office and its leader — in a highly unusual attack on the nonpartisan agency — of politicizing a process long viewed by both parties as arduous but essential for anyone serving in government.”

Trump Asks Vaccine Skeptic to Chair New Commission

January 10, 2017 at 5:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President-elect Donald Trump asked Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a proponent of a widely discredited theory that vaccines cause autism, to chair a new commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity,” the Washington Post reports.

“The stunning move pushes up against established science, medicine and the government’s position on the issue. It comes after Trump — who has long been critical of vaccines — met at Trump Tower with Kennedy, who has spearheaded efforts to roll back child vaccination laws.”

— President-elect Donald Trump, quoted by the New Yorker, on how he will disentangle himself from his business interests so as to not violate the Emoluments Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

GOP Plans to Quickly Confirm Nominees Stall

January 10, 2017 at 3:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Republican plans to quickly confirm Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees were upended Tuesday amid Democratic pressure to slow down the schedule as a federal ethics watchdog reviewing the backgrounds of nominees warned it could take months to probe some of the wealthier picks.”

“There are no indications that any of Trump’s Cabinet choices are at risk of being rejected by the Senate — a rare occurrence — and Republican leaders continue to insist that all of Trump’s choices will be confirmed. But the calendar changes followed days of Republican assurances that hearings would commence quickly and simultaneously.”

Hillary Clinton Paved Way for Kushner Appointment

January 10, 2017 at 12:23 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “In 1967, then President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an anti-nepotism bill into law that was widely seen as a reaction to his disapproval of the appointment of Robert Kennedy in John F. Kennedy’s previous administration. The law became an issue once again in 1993 when two federal appeals court judges in Washington, D.C., ruled that the law did not apply to White House staff.”

“At the time, then President Bill Clinton had appointed his wife, Hillary, to lead health care reform efforts in his administration.”

“Now experts say that ruling may bolster the Trump administration’s position that Kushner’s appointment, which according to the transition team will be an unpaid job, is above board.”

‘Anger Is a Strategy’

January 10, 2017 at 7:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Wall Street Journal offers this insight into Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson’s negotiating approach:

He spent hours with the company’s negotiating teams, preparing for every potential aspect and plotting tactics, including the theatrical, according to people he worked with.

In a meeting in Yemen in the 1990s, he threw a book and stormed out of talks. The tantrum was preplanned, one person said. “Anger is a strategy, not an emotion,” Mr. Tillerson told colleagues.

Two Cabinet Nominees Republicans Are Worried About

January 10, 2017 at 7:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Republicans close to Trump are most worried about two Cabinet nominees: Steven Mnuchin for Treasury and Andy Puzder at Labor. Why? The combination of two factors: Neither of them have had particularly public-facing jobs and both have made a pile of money with practices some Americans might find objectionable. Democrats are expected to hit Mnuchin over his role in bank foreclosures and the financial crisis. And Puzder has made plenty of comments about minimum wage that are at odds with Democrats. Plus, his fast food company has a penchant for featuring attractive women in bikinis in the advertisements. That could also stir up some embarrassing fodder.”

DeVos Confirmation Hearing Delayed

January 10, 2017 at 7:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The confirmation hearing for Betsy DeVos, President-elect Donald Trump’s Education secretary pick, has been pushed back by almost a week,” Politico reports.

“The move comes after Democrats, including Murray, had called for DeVos’ confirmation hearing to be delayed because the Office of Government Ethics has not finished its ethics review of the billionaire education activist’s finances. Democrats argued that the hearing should not be held until DeVos’ ethics and financial disclosure paperwork is finalized.”

“Booker will be one of three African-American lawmakers making a case against Sessions as they try to prevent him from becoming Donald Trump’s top law enforcement officer.”

Trump Pick Plagiarized Her Dissertation Too

January 9, 2017 at 9:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Monica Crowley, President-Elect Donald Trump’s pick for a top National Security Council job, plagiarized numerous passages in her Ph.D. dissertation, Politico reports.

“An examination of the dissertation and the sources it cites identified around more than a dozen sections of text that have been lifted, with little to no changes, from other scholarly works without proper attribution. In some instances, Crowley footnoted her source but did not identify with quotation marks the text she was copying directly. In other instances, she copied text or heavily paraphrased with no attribution at all.”

A report over the weekend found Crowley plagiarized significant portions of her recent book too.

Dress Shops Dispute Trump’s Claim of Big Demand

January 9, 2017 at 5:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President-elect Donald Trump told the New York Times that Washington, D.C. shops have been selling out of gowns, with big numbers expected at his inauguration.

Said Trump: “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.”

But People magazine called a few area stores that carry formal dresses and evening wear, and every store said they had plenty of inventory available for those seeking an outfit to wear to the inauguration.

Said one: “No, we’re not sold out. We have 200 dresses, if not more, in stock.”

Said another: “There’s never been less demand for inaugural ballgowns in my 38 years. Never ever has it been less for the inaugural.”
