Trump Says Shutdown Could Last Years

President Trump “threatened to keep the U.S. government partially shut for months or years on Friday after he and Democratic leaders failed to resolve their dispute over Trump’s request for $5.6 billion to build a wall on the Mexican border,” Reuters reports.

Said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer: “He said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.”

First Read: “There are usually two ways these kind of political impasses get solved: 1) the deal gets bigger — a lot more goodies and incentives get introduced to find a compromise, or 2) one side ends up caving.”

“And if you’re looking to see which side might eventually cave, look at the side with the biggest fissures and the most to lose.”
