Louisiana Girds for Megabill Fallout

July 3, 2025 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Louisiana is poorer, sicker and hungrier than most states, and the deep cuts to Medicaid have a growing number of Republicans in Louisiana worried that Congress and the White House are going too far. They are anxious that rural hospitals whose finances are highly dependent on federal Medicaid funds would face crippling revenue losses and be forced to shut down, depriving all residents of accessible health care.”

“The blowback over Medicaid represents the most significant crack between GOP leaders in Washington and in the states so far in this administration, according to interviews with nearly two dozen Louisiana state leaders.”

July 3, 2025 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In his second term, a “freewheeling” President Trump likens the Oval Office to New York’s Grand Central Station, full of people coming and going (regardless of their security clearances), NBC News reports.

Congress Folds

July 3, 2025 at 7:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook points out that Thursday’s vote on President Trump’s megabill may give rise to a new phrase: “Congress always chickens out.”

Sherrod Brown Weighs His Next Move

July 3, 2025 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is still weighing where he wants his political career to take him next: to the governor’s mansion or back to the Senate, Semafor reports.

Said Brown: “Everything’s on the table.”

He added: “I’m concerned about the direction of my state; I’m concerned about the direction of my country. So I don’t know.”

One in Five Americans Prefer a King

July 3, 2025 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Polling and strategy firm JL Partners asked 1,000 U.S. voters if they support or oppose replacing the current president of the United States with the British monarch. The survey found 19 percent of Americans supported the idea, with 48 percent opposed and the rest on the fence.”

Quote of the Day

July 3, 2025 at 6:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This is the kind of opportunity, once lost, where people look back centuries later and ask how the moment to save civilization was allowed to pass by.”

— Stephen Miller, on X, urging Republican holdouts to back President Trump’s megabill.

House Freedom Caucus Caves Again

July 3, 2025 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “What makes this so remarkable is that Harris, Roy and Self spent a huge chunk of this week dumping all over the bill, only to vote for it with absolutely no changes a day later. Roy went as far as to say that he wouldn’t vote for a rule at all and indicated he wanted to revise the package and send it back to the Senate. That’s not going to happen now.”

“The House Freedom Caucus caved once again. They will lose a tremendous amount of sway in the wake of this episode.”

Politico: “There was some tough love, too. Several MAGA-world figures including long-time Trump aide Jason Miller and Trump’s 2024 co-campaign manager Chris LaCivita threatened the Republican holdouts on social media. Trump, who’d been privately helping Johnson press them all day, piled on pressure in a series of increasingly irritated missives.”

House Clears Procedural Hurdle on Trump’s Agenda

July 3, 2025 at 5:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republican leaders overcame a critical hurdle Thursday to advance President Donald Trump’s massive tax and immigration legislation, paving the way to pass the legislation in the morning,” the Washington Post reports.

“All but one Republican voted to clear the procedural hurdle, known as a rule, that outlines the parameters for debate ahead of a final passage vote. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) confidently declared Trump and GOP leaders notched enough votes throughout Wednesday and early Thursday to send the president’s agenda to his desk before July 4.”

Punchbowl News: “The House held back-to-back votes open for a combined 14 hours, as Johnson, his leadership team, Trump and senior administration officials furiously whipped holdout GOP lawmakers to back the $3.3 trillion package.”

Maybe Trade Deals Aren’t So Easy

July 3, 2025 at 5:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After failing to cut a trade deal with Japan following weeks of talks, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer decided to turn up the pressure,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“When Japanese officials arrived in Washington in late May, Lutnick and Greer warned them that if the two sides couldn’t work out an agreement soon, the conversations might start shifting from easing the tariffs President Trump had recently imposed toward additional punitive measures, according to people familiar with the matter. The Americans said they might demand a cap on the number of vehicles Japan could export to the U.S.—a policy known as a voluntary export restriction.”

“But the Japanese officials stood their ground. From the start, they had told the Americans they wouldn’t agree to any deal that preserves Trump’s 25% automotive tariff, according to people familiar with the conversations. That impasse continues.”

Reuters: Japan invokes national interest as tariff talks with US struggle.

A Bare-Bones Deal Is Europe’s Best Hope

July 3, 2025 at 5:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The European Union may have to settle for a “political” solution in the race to strike a trade deal with the U.S. before the early-July return of full-on reciprocal tariffs,” CNBC reports.

Said one E.U. official: “The U.S. proposal from last week is aimed at an agreement in principle.”

Trump’s Tariff Pause Is Set to Expire

July 3, 2025 at 5:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s trade war risks reigniting next week when a temporary pause on sweeping tariffs is set to expire, potentially driving up costs for businesses and raising prices for consumers,” NBC News reports.

“While Trump and administration officials recently indicated the deadline might be pushed back, the president told reporters Tuesday that he wasn’t planning an extension and is informing countries of their new tariff rates. He said it has been harder than planned to make trade deals with a number of foreign governments because they are ‘spoiled from having ripped us off for 30, 40 years.’”

Trump Weighs Criminal Charges Against Election Officials

July 3, 2025 at 5:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Senior Justice Department officials are exploring whether they can bring criminal charges against state or local election officials if the Trump administration determines they have not sufficiently safeguarded their computer systems.”

“The department’s effort, which is still in its early stages, is not based on new evidence, data or legal authority … Instead, it is driven by the unsubstantiated argument made by many in the Trump administration that American elections are easy prey to voter fraud and foreign manipulation.”

‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Opens for Business

July 3, 2025 at 5:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Miami Herald: “On Wednesday evening, the gates of the facility were bustling with traffic. Three white vans escorted by sedans drove into the compound. The vans looked like those previously used by immigration authorities to transport migrants, although it’s unclear who was in them.”

“The site’s name also became official on Wednesday, when two workers slapped a large blue guidepost that said ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ over the old ‘Dade-Collier Transitional Airport’ road sign that led people to the airstrip for years.”

Mike Johnson Stares Down Hardliners

July 2, 2025 at 9:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republican hard-liners vowed to deprive Speaker Mike Johnson of the needed votes should he try to force party’s domestic policy megabill through the House overnight — just before Johnson ordered votes to move forward,” Politico reports.

“The ultimatum came after House Freedom Caucus huddled among themselves following hours of negotiating Wednesday with GOP leaders, who had said they were making progress with the holdouts and planned to grind forward with a vote. If enough Freedom Caucus members withhold their votes, the ‘rule’ — the procedural measure providing for final floor consideration of the megabill — will fail.”

President Trump also pushed forward: “It looks like the House is ready to vote tonight.”

It’s Trump’s Economy Now

July 2, 2025 at 9:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal/YouGov Poll: “Trump voters are now likelier to say that he is more responsible for the current state of the economy than to say that former President Joe Biden is, by a margin of 46% to 34%.”

“Trump voters had been likelier to pick Biden before last month.”

Biden Warns His Accomplishments Are Coming Undone

July 2, 2025 at 8:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Biden, in his lengthiest public remarks since he revealed his cancer diagnosis in May, said some of his presidency’s key accomplishments were “changing so rapidly” under the Trump administration and that European leaders had sought his advice since he left the White House, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Said Biden: “Many of the things I worked so damn hard, that I thought I changed in the country, are changing so rapidly.”

Fractured House GOP Fights Over Trump’s Bill

July 2, 2025 at 8:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s marquee domestic policy bill was stalled in the House on Wednesday, with the chamber frozen in place as Speaker Mike Johnson labored to overcome resistance in his own ranks and push the measure to a final vote,” the New York Times reports.

“After a day of private cajoling by Mr. Johnson at the Capitol and Mr. Trump at the White House, party leaders expressed optimism that they might soon be able to move ahead. But by early evening, they had yet to lock down the votes to do so, particularly among a bloc of fiscally conservative Republicans who were dismayed by its cost and demanding changes that could derail it altogether.”

Wall Street Journal: “The number of House Republicans who have said they would oppose the Senate version of the legislation had been seen as sufficient to block its passage, though past standoffs have been resolved following pressure campaigns by the president and party leaders.“
