Inside the Chaos Swirling Through the DNC

June 18, 2025 at 3:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Just months into the tenure of a new party leader, Ken Martin, the Democratic National Committee’s financial situation has grown so bleak that top officials have discussed whether they might need to borrow money this year to keep paying the bills,” the New York Times reports.

“Fund-raising from major donors — some of whom Mr. Martin has still not spoken with — has slowed sharply. At the same time, he has expanded the party’s financial commitments to every state, and even to far-flung territories like Guam.”

“Fellow Democrats are grumbling that Mr. Martin, who quietly accepted a raise after taking the post, has been badly distracted by internal battles. So far, they say, he has been unable to help unite his party against Republicans, who control the federal government.”

U.S. Steel Now Under Foreign Ownership

June 18, 2025 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nippon Steel has finalized its deal to buy 100% of US Steel, the iconic steelmaker that was once the world’s most valuable company and a cornerstone of American industrial might,” CNN reports.

“But while Nippon is buying the entirety of US Steel, under the final deal the US government will gain a say in many key decisions on how the company is run. That includes giving President Donald Trump veto power over any decision to idle plants, reduce production or staffing levels.”

GOP Hawks Appear to Be Winning Over Trump

June 18, 2025 at 2:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump, who criticized his predecessor for allowing new wars to break out on his watch, is increasingly listening to a small group of Iran hawks who have been pushing to go tougher on Tehran,” Politico reports.

“Trump has become more receptive to arguments by those advocating more military engagement, including Gen. Michael ‘Erik’ Kurilla, who leads Central Command, as well as Republican senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Tom Cotton of Arkansas.”

Social Security Could Run Dry Ahead of Earlier Forecast

June 18, 2025 at 2:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The trust funds for Social Security and Medicare will run out of money in less than a decade, as the programs’ trustees warned that the funds’ depletion date is significantly closer than predicted a year ago,” the Washington Post reports.

“If Congress does not overhaul the programs’ financing, automatic cuts will slash Social Security benefits by 23 percent and Medicare hospital benefits by 11 percent in 2033.”

Fed Holds Rates Steady

June 18, 2025 at 2:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal Reserve officials left the door open to cutting interest rates in the second half of the year when they agreed to hold rates steady Wednesday,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“President Trump pre-emptively blasted the widely anticipated rate decision earlier in the day and called for much more dramatic cuts of between 1 and 2.5 percentage points. The Fed left its policy rate in a range between 4.25% and 4.5%.”

Trump Claims Iran Proposed White House Meeting

June 18, 2025 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that Iran “still wants to negotiate with the U.S. and even proposed sending a delegation to the White House, Axios reports.

But Iran denied it in a statement: “No Iranian official has ever asked to grovel at the gates of the White House. The only thing more despicable than his lies is his cowardly threat to ‘take out’ Iran’s Supreme Leader. Iran does NOT negotiate under duress, shall NOT accept peace under duress, and certainly NOT with a has-been warmonger clinging to relevance.”

Trump’s Conflicting Messages on Workplace Raids

June 18, 2025 at 1:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is sending conflicting messages about his immigration crackdown, promising a reprieve for certain industries that rely on immigrant labor while doubling down on his promise to arrest and deport anyone who is living in the United States illegally,” the New York Times reports.

“The situation has left business owners unclear on exactly what the Trump policy is, just days after the president said “changes are coming” to help those in the farming and hospitality industries whose employees are too scared to show up for work.”

June 18, 2025 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The governor of China’s central bank outlined a plan on Wednesday for a global financial system that relies on several major currencies, not just the dollar, as Beijing steps up its campaign to weaken the U.S. dollar’s primacy,” the New York Times reports.

Trump Confronts Rare MAGA Purity Tests

June 18, 2025 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ten years after Donald Trump hijacked the GOP with a promise to burn down the establishment, his own movement is warning him not to go soft,” Axios reports.

“On two core articles of faith — no foreign wars and no protections for unauthorized immigrants — the Trump administration is facing a rare MAGA purity test.”

Congress Dodges Any Preemptive Challenge to Trump

June 18, 2025 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate leaders are avoiding direct answers on whether President Trump needs approval from Congress before taking any military action against Iran,” Axios reports.

“Congress is reluctant to second-guess the commander-in-chief before he actually authorizes strikes. But Democrats have a visceral distrust of Trump, and a growing GOP faction is deeply suspicious of foreign military interventions.”

Justices Affirm Ban on Gender-Affirming Care

June 18, 2025 at 10:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors, a stunning setback to transgender rights,” the AP reports.

“The justices’ 6-3 decision in a case from Tennessee effectively protects from legal challenges many efforts by President Donald Trump’s Republican administration and state governments to roll back protections for transgender people. Another 26 states have laws similar to the one in Tennessee.”

G7 Confronts New Reality After Trump Spoils Hopes

June 18, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On Sunday evening, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney took to a comfy sofa to chew the fat over glasses of wine with European Group of Seven leaders at their hotel bar in Kananaskis, the Rocky Mountain resort hosting this year’s summit,” Bloomberg reports.

“The unplanned gathering started when UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer bumped into German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with Carney, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron joining. The topics were meaty — including a discussion of escalating tensions in the Middle East. But the atmosphere was relaxed, with one G-7 official describing it as a drink among friends. US President Donald Trump had yet to arrive.”

“For Carney, the summit was an exercise in trying to keep the annual gathering of the most powerful western leaders relevant. Ultimately, it exposed how fractured the forum has become — with Trump forging a lone path and leaving his counterparts from the other six nations to wonder what his next move will be.”

Trump Pretends Laws Don’t Exist

June 18, 2025 at 9:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) said Wednesday he is open to negotiating with the Senate to advance President Trump’s massive tax and spending bill, but insisted he would not agree to cut a $40,000 cap on state and local tax deductions, or SALT, Bloomberg reports.

Said Lawler: “We negotiated. That’s the deal.”

Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech that the Islamic Republic “will not surrender” and threatened that if the U.S. takes military action against Iran, “it will undoubtedly cause irreparable consequences to them,” Axios reports.

New York Times: “Overnight, the ayatollah had issued a defiant call to arms, saying in a post on social media that ‘the battle begins.”

Americans Divided Over Impact of AI

June 18, 2025 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Americans are almost evenly split on several questions measuring their views on artificial intelligence, with no meaningful differences based on age and partisanship,” according to the NBC News Decision Desk Poll.

“The split views on AI use and AI’s impact on the future come as elected officials in Washington have largely left AI companies untouched, introducing few regulations that constrain them.”
