Maine Senate Race Kicks Off

May 7, 2026 at 12:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Graham Platner (D) “released dueling ads on Thursday in what amounted to a kickoff of the general election,” the New York Times reports.

“The ads are strikingly different, with Mr. Platner in full-throated attack mode and Ms. Collins pointing to what she has done for Maine — underscoring what are likely to be some of their central arguments.”

“The spots represent the start of a flood of political spending in Maine, with the race already on track to be one of the most expensive in state history.”

GOP Lawmaker Proposes Bill to Wind Down Iran War

May 7, 2026 at 12:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A first-term House Republican facing a difficult re-election fight introduced a bill on Thursday that would authorize continued U.S. military operations in Iran through the end of July, but with strict limits, implicitly rejecting President Trump’s claim that the war has ended.”

“The legislation by Representative Tom Barrett, a Michigan Republican, was the latest indication of growing uneasiness among Republicans on Capitol Hill about the war, which Mr. Trump began with no authorization from Congress and which has dragged on far beyond his initial timetable. Unhappiness with the war has further darkened an already grim political environment for the G.O.P. as it grasps to keep its majorities.”

National Debt Has Soared Under Trump

May 7, 2026 at 12:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rolling Stone: “You probably missed an obscure but important milestone our country hit last week: America’s debt passed 100 percent of our gross domestic product.”

“So what, you say? That sounds boring and technical. It’s actually really fucking important. It means that America’s accumulated debt — our impulse to borrow from other people to pay for the things we want and need — is now larger than the total size of the American economy. It shouldn’t take an economist to recognize this as bad and definitionally unsustainable.”

“The last time our deficit passed 100 percent of GDP, it was World War II. But when countries pass this milestone in ordinary times, it is a formula for decline that has accompanied the fall of republics and empires alike.”

Appeals Court Poised to Reject Hegseth’s Action

May 7, 2026 at 12:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal appeals court appeared ready Thursday to reject Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s effort to punish Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly over his call to US service members to refuse illegal orders,” CNN reports.

Hantavirus Response Shows Effects of Trump Cuts

May 7, 2026 at 12:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “To some public health experts, the alarming thing about this situation is not the hantavirus, which they note spreads among people rarely, and only with close contact over a period of time rather than casual interactions.”

“It is that the administration’s sluggish response and lack of communication suggest the United States is ill prepared for a larger health crisis, such as another pandemic.”

Congress Is Struggling to Do the Bare Minimum

May 7, 2026 at 12:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The House recently passed a measure reopening most of the Department of Homeland Security after a 76-day shutdown. Its passage after a monthlong logjam was hailed as a breakthrough. It wasn’t. Rather, it papered over the increasingly shaky state of Congress, with big implications for the institution and the people who run it.”

“The public perception of Congress remains near a record low, according to recent polling by Gallup, which showed 10% of voters approve of Congress and 86% disapprove—a net of minus 76 percentage points. The current GOP-controlled Congress reached a peak of 31% approval in March 2025 but saw a steep decline during last year’s record-long shutdown of the full government. Congress hasn’t been above water in more than two decades.”

“Two and a half years after rebel Republicans ousted their own speaker of the House, Congress is at a new nadir, marked by intense partisanship that deters dealmaking and slim majorities that empower any small group to defy party leaders.”

GOP Lawmaker Moves to Ban Prediction Market Trades

May 7, 2026 at 11:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) introduced a resolution on Thursday to amend House rules and prohibit members, staff and other chamber employees from trading on prediction markets, according to a draft obtained by Punchbowl News.

U.S. Intelligence Says Iran Can Outlast Trump’s Blockade

May 7, 2026 at 11:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A confidential CIA analysis delivered to administration policymakers this week concludes that Iran can survive the U.S. naval blockade for at least three to four months before facing more severe economic hardship, four people familiar with the document said, a finding that appears to raise new questions about President Donald Trump’s optimism on ending the war.”

“The analysis by the U.S. intelligence community, whose secret assessments on Iran have often been more sober than the administration’s public statements, also found that Tehran retains significant ballistic missile capabilities despite weeks of intense U.S. and Israeli bombardment, three of the people familiar with it said.”

Quote of the Day

May 7, 2026 at 10:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We have a Department of Justice today that targets people for criminal prosecution simply because the president doesn’t like them… We have a department that fails to move on cases because they might uncover facts that are inconvenient to narratives the president would like to press.”

— Former special counsel Jack Smith, quoted by the New York Times, at a private gathering.

U.S. Ices Out Canada in Major Trade Negotiations

May 7, 2026 at 10:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “Business and political leaders are bracing for another Trump administration-style trade showdown as efforts stumble to renegotiate the trade agreement among the United States, Mexico and Canada.”

“U.S. discussions are continuing with Mexico, but America has iced out Canada in the trade talks with less than two months until the countries must agree to extend the agreement or trigger annual revisions.”

Democrats Still Have a California Problem

May 7, 2026 at 10:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Steve Morris: “The California gubernatorial race has huge stakes for the Democratic Party. The candidates don’t quite measure up.”

“Whatever else one might think, it’s hard not to feel like California’s gubernatorial field is smaller than the moment. Literally, in one sense — the candidates are unusually short for politicians. The field also lacks any of the A-list candidates many expected to jump in: former VP Kamala Harris, Sen. Alex Padilla, and state Attorney General Rob Bonta all passed on the race. The only incumbent statewide office holders, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and State Treasurer Fiona Ma, dropped out, as did the only incumbent member of Congress, the now disgraced ex-Rep. Eric Swalwell.”

“That’s left a field of unlikely contenders now battling to be the leader of the world’s fifth-largest economy, leading some to draw comparisons to the 1988 Democratic presidential field, which was labeled the ‘seven dwarfs,’ both for the candidates’ physical stature and their non-heavyweight status.”

“My sense of this was only reinforced when watching Tuesday’s debate, which was one of the candidates’ last high-profile appearances before the June 2nd primary.”

Kathy Hochul Includes New Second-Home Tax in Budget

May 7, 2026 at 9:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) announced that legislative leaders have reached a handshake agreement on a $268 billion budget that will include funding to expand child care and a new tax on multimillion-dollar second homes in New York City, the New York Times reports.

Trump Is Trapped by His Own Strategy in Iran

May 7, 2026 at 9:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Collinson: “Trump is ensnared by two traps of his own making — one geopolitical and the other domestic. Iran’s leverage over the Strait of Hormuz and refusal to fold mean he can’t definitively end the war at an acceptable military price.”

“And as the conflict drags on, its political impact at home further narrows his options. With an approval rating in the 30s, gas prices averaging over $4.50 a gallon and public opposition to the war rising, he’s got no political space to continue waging it.”

“So Trump is stuck — a reality that helps explain his incessantly upbeat claims of progress in peace talks and tendency to announce or change military strategies with no warning.”

U.S. Still Waiting for Iran’s Peace Deal Response

May 7, 2026 at 9:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The US is waiting on Iran to respond to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end a war that’s killed thousands of people, with tensions still high in both the Persian Gulf and in Lebanon.”

“Iran’s leaders are yet to indicate whether they’ll accept the terms of the deal, though they’ve previously shown little sign of yielding on their nuclear program and accepting a moratorium on enriching uranium, which the US is calling for.”

Trumponomics and the New Brand of Capitalism

May 7, 2026 at 9:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s willingness to insert the power and the purse of the federal government into corporate America has become one of the defining stories of his second term,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Manufacturing. Big Tech. Big Media. Energy Firms. Even Airlines. He has flexed his presidential muscle to get companies to follow his wishes. And he’s done it with swift effectiveness. Finding investors for TikTok, extracting shares of Intel, approving the U.S. Steel acquisition in exchange for the “golden share”— that was all Trump.”

“Corporate America had traditionally dealt with a more hands-off approach from GOP administrations, and Trump’s tact is something different. But Trump is tapping in to a populist sentiment that cuts across political parties. Following the deeply unpopular, taxpayer-funded bailouts that began in 2008, many Americans were outraged that the government didn’t ask for anything in return for U.S. assistance.”

Iran’s President Met With Injured Supreme Leader

May 7, 2026 at 9:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he met with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei in a rare public account of interactions with the country’s head of state who’s been in hiding since the start of the war with the US and Israel.”
