Pentagon Moves to Fire Civilian Personnel with ‘Speed’

October 28, 2025 at 5:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon removed key protections for defense civilian workers and directed that managers move with “speed and conviction” to fire employees with “unacceptable” performance reviews last month, just a day before the government shut down,” the Washington Post reports.

“The move is seen by some managers as necessary to get rid of underperforming employees. Others caution that the edict, signed by Undersecretary of Defense Anthony Tata, the Pentagon’s top personnel policy officer, is so broad it could be used to fire anyone who doesn’t rubber stamp the administration’s programs.”

“If Andrew Cuomo pulls off a comeback, Trump will gain new leverage over an old rival who is facing a potential Department of Justice inquiry into whether he lied to Congress.”

U.S. Military Officials Required to Sign NDAs

October 28, 2025 at 3:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.S. military officials involved in the attacks on vessels suspected to be trafficking drugs “have been asked to sign non-disclosure agreements, a development that raises new questions about a military buildup that Venezuela fears may lead to an invasion,” Reuters reports.

“The step is highly unusual, given that U.S. military officials are already required to shield national security secrets from public view, and comes as lawmakers in Congress say they are being kept in the dark about key aspects of the mission.”

It’s ‘Autopsy’ Day for Democrats

October 28, 2025 at 2:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

It’s apparently “autopsy” day for Democrats, as two think tanks — the left-leaning Roosevelt Institute and the more centrist Welcome — each released reports dissecting what went wrong in last year’s presidential election.

Mike Johnson Sees No ‘Path’ for Trump Third Term

October 28, 2025 at 1:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson said he doesn’t “see a way to amend the Constitution” to allow for President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office, ABC News reports.

CNN: “The Republican leader’s acknowledgment that he and Trump have discussed issues surrounding a third-term adds credence to warnings from the president’s opponents that he is seriously flirting with upending the Constitution. But Johnson’s quickly throwing cold water on the suggestion underscores how little support Trump would have if he actually tried to move forward with it.”

Greg Sargent: “The left-leaning Roosevelt Institute is releasing a major new report Tuesday — with input from nearly four dozen former senior Biden officials — that seeks to diagnose the administration’s governing mistakes and failures.”

“One of its most compelling conclusions is that the Biden administration seemed reluctant to engage in ‘picking the fights worth having’ and sometimes took refuge in incremental policy gains due to a self-limiting ‘risk aversion.’”
