The Trump administration is requesting $58 million to increase security for the executive and judicial branches in the wake of the killing of Charlie Kirk, Punchbowl News reports.
The request, which the administration is sending to Capitol Hill ahead of the Sept. 30 funding deadline, is directed to the United States Marshals Service. It would also go toward protecting Supreme Court justices.
“President Trump on Saturday set conditions for imposing new sanctions on Russia, saying he would do so only if all NATO member nations did the same and also stopped buying Russian oil and imposed steep tariffs on China,” the New York Times reports.
“They were the latest in a series of new conditions that Mr. Trump had announced before he would agree on punitive action against Russia, which has accelerated its aggression against Ukraine despite a summit that Mr. Trump held with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia a month ago in Alaska. None of the steps Mr. Trump had said were required to begin an end to the war — including a negotiation between Mr. Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine — have taken place, or appear imminent.”

“President Trump and his top advisers are escalating their attacks on their opponents in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s killing, placing the blame for political violence on Democrats alone and signaling a broad crackdown on critics and left-leaning institutions,” the New York Times reports.
“Secretary of State Marco Rubio departed for Israel on Saturday amid signs that President Trump was growing frustrated about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s unrelenting campaign against Hamas prolonging the war in Gaza,” the New York Times reports.
“Mr. Rubio will land in Israel on Sunday as its military prepares for a major offensive in Gaza City. His visit comes days after an audacious Israeli airstrike targeted Hamas officials in Qatar. Arab and European officials have said that the attack would make ending the conflict even harder.”
Axios: Rubio to discuss with Netanyahu Israeli plan for possible West Bank annexation.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City on Saturday and called on his party’s leadership to do the same, criticizing them for a delay that he said allowed President Trump to exploit Democratic divisions, the New York Times reports.

Politico: “Trump this week insisted Americans are experiencing the ‘best economy we’ve ever had.’ Privately, White House officials acknowledge people just aren’t feeling it…”
“Trumpeting positive economic statistics in the face of sagging sentiment is a political trap that has ensnared many administrations… Republicans could face a similar problem as they head into what is expected to be a difficult fight for control of the House.”
“As Israeli war planners plotted a secret strike on Hamas political leaders in Qatar, they chose a plan that enabled them to attack quickly and limited the opportunity for the U.S. to object,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

NBC News: “The most concerning messages are proclamations from far-right activists, Republican politicians and conservative influencers about a coming civil war and the need for retribution or payback against the left for Kirk’s killing. “Democrats are more confident in their negotiating stance compared with March, when a similar attempt to play hardball fizzled. While today’s talks pit them against Republican leaders who want a two-month spending deal with no big additions, they are finding support among rank-and-file GOP lawmakers fearing political backlash if their voters are hit by higher health-insurance bills next year.”
“President Trump made his demands to Brazil very clear: Drop the charges against former President Jair Bolsonaro of attempting a coup,” the New York Times reports.
