How to Avoid DNA Leaks at a World Leaders Summit

April 27, 2026 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Xi Jinping had just finished a lunch of herbed-ricotta ravioli at a secluded estate outside San Francisco in 2023 when his security agents sprang into action,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Their mission: ensuring no trace of the Chinese leader’s DNA fell into foreign hands. The agents—measuring about 6-foot-3, dressed in identical dark suits—were observed grabbing Xi’s utensils and plate and spraying them with an unidentified liquid.”

“Welcome to the unseen theater of great-power diplomacy, where a meeting of the two most powerful leaders on earth can hinge on the slightest missed protocol, an unexpected miscue or even a bit of saliva left on a fork. It is a ritual that is at once deeply absurd and deadly serious. The length of a red carpet can say more about the state of the world than official statements.”

What’s Next in the Nationwide Redistricting Fight

April 27, 2026 at 5:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A nationwide gerrymandering tug of war moves this week to the Florida Legislature and Virginia’s top court, the latest fronts in a lengthy battle Democrats and Republicans have fought to a rough draw so far,” the New York Times reports.

Shutdown Nears Breaking Point After Shooting

April 27, 2026 at 5:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is putting more pressure on Congress to swiftly end the 73-day Department of Homeland Security shutdown,” Semafor reports.

“The Secret Service falls under DHS, and the Trump administration estimates its ability to pay employees under executive order will run dry at the end of the week, according to multiple people in both parties.”

“Still, it’s an open question whether the shooting will be enough to resolve the impasse.”

Former Israeli Premiers Join in Bid to Oust Netanyahu

April 27, 2026 at 5:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The centrist leader of Israel’s opposition, Yair Lapid, and a right-wing former prime minister, Naftali Bennett, announced on Sunday that they would combine forces in elections later this year. The merger is an apparent bid to reconstitute a partnership that temporarily unseated Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu five years ago,” the New York Times reports.

They described the move as “the first step in the process of uniting and repairing the state of Israel.”

Rumors and Speculation Swirl Online After Shooting

April 27, 2026 at 5:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Almost as soon as gunshots were reported from the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday night, social media was flooded with conspiracy theories and finger-pointing over the attack. In a now-common phenomenon after such incidents, prominent influencers fill the information vacuum with speculation in a bid for attention and followers,” the New York Times reports.

“The miasma of falsehoods, rumors and conjecture has clouded multiple breaking news moments in recent years, including two previous assassination attempts against President Trump and the capture of Nicolás Maduro, then Venezuela’s president.”

King Charles Hopes to Salvage U.K. Relations With Trump

April 27, 2026 at 5:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“King Charles III arrives in Washington on Monday to publicly celebrate 250 years since a nascent U.S. republic ousted his forebears, and privately ensure that a fraying trans-Atlantic relationship can cope with another two-plus years of President Trump,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The four day visit—billed as Charles’s most high-wire diplomatic act since coming to the throne—will include a speech to Congress, the first time a British monarch has spoken there since 1991, a private audience with Trump and state dinner in Washington, as well as trips to New York and Virginia.”

New York Times: Can King Charles help heal the U.S.-British rupture?

Quote of the Day

April 26, 2026 at 10:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Well, I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would because you’re … horrible people. Horrible people. Yeah, he did write that. I’m not a rapist. I didn’t rape anybody… I’m not a pedophile. You read that crap from some sick person? I got associated with … stuff that has nothing to do with me. I was totally exonerated.”

— President Trump, quoted by Deadline, getting angry with 60 Minutes‘ Norah O’Donnell after she read a portion of a manifesto left by the suspect who stormed through a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

Iran Offers U.S. Deal to Reopen Strait

April 26, 2026 at 10:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran gave the U.S. a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, with nuclear negotiations postponed for a later stage,” Axios reports.

“The diplomacy is in a stalemate, and the Iranian leadership is divided about what nuclear concessions should be on the table. The Iranian proposal would bypass that issue en route to a faster deal.”

“But lifting the blockade and ending the war would remove President Trump’s leverage in any future talks to remove Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and convince Tehran to suspend enrichment — two primary war objectives for Trump.”

California’s Billionaire Tax Has the Signatures

April 26, 2026 at 5:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Backers of the proposed California billionaire tax believe they have gathered enough signatures to get the initiative on the November ballot, according to people familiar with the campaign, likely kicking off a bruising battle over the initiative,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“More than 1.5 million people have signed a petition to get the one-time, 5% wealth tax on statewide ballots in November, the people said. They said they expect that will be more than enough to clear the required 875,000-signature threshold, even after accounting for illegible or invalid signatures.”

Shooting Suspect Was Targeting Trump

April 26, 2026 at 5:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The suspected gunman who fired shots Saturday outside the White House Correspondents’ dinner was targeting President Trump and administration officials, according to a 1,000-word document the authorities have tied to the man, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, Calif,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The gunman appeared to be acting alone, and had a shotgun, handgun and knives on him, officials said. Cole was a guest at the hotel where the dinner was taking place, and in the document he outlined security breaches that he said made getting firearms into the building easier than he expected.”

Data Centers Becoming ‘Inescapable’ in Georgia

April 26, 2026 at 5:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A multibillion-dollar data center boom is provoking a bipartisan backlash in one of the nation’s most pivotal political battlegrounds,” Politico reports.

“Tax breaks, a stable power grid and vast tracts of undeveloped land have made Georgia a mecca for the artificial intelligence industry, with sprawling data center campuses under review or in development across rural acres and the Atlanta suburbs alike.”

April 26, 2026 at 5:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The move clears the way for Federal chair nominee Kevin Warsh to advance.

Said Tillis: “I take the Department of Justice at its word: the investigation is closed.”

Trump Says Shooting Proves Need for New Ballroom

April 26, 2026 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said Saturday night that the shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner hours earlier highlighted the need for his planned White House ballroom — a project that has been mired in legal battles for months,” the Washington Post reports.

“Even if the new ballroom were built, it’s not at all clear that a future White House correspondents’ dinner would be held there. The dinner is a private event, not a government function. That question, however, did not slow the chorus of conservative officials and right-wing commentators who seized on the shooting to argue for the $400 million project.”

Trump Sees Shootings as a Reflection of His Impact

April 26, 2026 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said Saturday that he views his repeated brushes with violence as a sign of his historic significance and is determined not to let the dangers affect him,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “I’ve studied assassinations, and I must tell you, the most impactful people, the people that do the most … they’re the ones that they go after.”

He added: “And I hate to say I’m honored by that, but I’ve done a lot.”

New York Times: Again, a gunman got perilously close to Trump.
