Trump Bringing Back Scores of CDC Experts Fired in Error

October 12, 2025 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Saturday raced to rescind layoffs of hundreds of scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who were mistakenly fired on Friday night in what appeared to be a substantial procedural lapse,” the New York Times reports.

“Among those wrongly dismissed were the top two leaders of the federal measles response team, those working to contain Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, members of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, and the team that assembles the C.D.C.’s vaunted scientific journal, The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.”

Ann Keller: “It’s not even the first time that, in their zeal to get rid of people, they’ve had to immediately hire people back. They are so steeped in their own anti government propaganda that they only see the need for experts in super obvious cases like the nuclear stockpile or hemorrhagic fever.”

Trump Escalates His Use of Power to Target Democrats

October 12, 2025 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s move to cancel projects in Democratic states during the government shutdown has prompted a furor and cries of partisanship,” the Washington Post reports.

“But it is only the latest example of his administration’s efforts to use power in ways that damage blue states and help red ones.”

Can Israel Repair Its Ties to Americans?

October 12, 2025 at 6:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The war in Gaza may finally be ending, after two years of bloodshed and destruction. But among the damage that has been done is a series of devastating blows to Israel’s relationship with the citizens of its most important and most stalwart ally, the United States,” the New York Times reports.

“Israel’s reputation in the United States is in tatters, and not only on college campuses or among progressives. For the first time since it began asking Americans about their sympathies in 1998, a New York Times poll last month found that slightly more voters sided with the Palestinians than with Israelis.”

Judges Fault Supreme Court’s Emergency Orders

October 11, 2025 at 11:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than three dozen federal judges have told The New York Times that the Supreme Court’s flurry of brief, opaque emergency orders in cases related to the Trump administration have left them confused about how to proceed in those matters and are hurting the judiciary’s image with the public,” the New York Times reports.

“At issue are the quick-turn orders the Supreme Court has issued dictating whether Trump administration policies should be left in place while they are litigated through the lower courts. That emergency docket, a growing part of the Supreme Court’s work in recent years, has taken on greater importance amid the flood of litigation challenging President Trump’s efforts to expand executive power.”

Trump Says Military Will Be Paid Despite Shutdown

October 11, 2025 at 3:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said he had directed the Pentagon to pay military servicemembers next week, with the government shutdown expected to continue amid an impasse in Congress,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Saturday that he had directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to ‘use all available funds’ to make sure troops receive their paychecks on Oct. 15. Military servicemembers have been expected next week to miss their first full paychecks since the shutdown began.”

Politico: “To scrounge up enough money to pay the troops, the Pentagon is tapping into its research and development accounts to use money Congress made available for two years.”

Arab States Expanded Cooperation with Israeli Military

October 11, 2025 at 3:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Even as key Arab states condemned the war in the Gaza Strip, they quietly expanded security cooperation with the Israeli military,“ the Washington Post reports.

“Those military ties were thrown into crisis after Israel’s September airstrike in Qatar, but could now play a key role in overseeing the nascent ceasefire in Gaza.”

“Over the past three years, facilitated by the United States, senior military officials from Israel and six Arab countries came together for a series of planning meetings in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan and Qatar.”

“The Trump administration said that its immigration crackdown is hurting farmers and risking higher food prices for Americans by cutting off agriculture’s labor supply,” the Washington Post reports.

Inside JD Vance’s Redistricting Rescue Mission

October 11, 2025 at 12:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “JD Vance once again descended on barn-red Indiana yesterday to make the case for mid-cycle redistricting to reluctant Hoosier lawmakers, his second trip to the state and third meeting with them in three months.”

“In a trip that was neither advised nor confirmed by his own office until Air Force Two appeared in the Indianapolis skies, Vance spent hours with Republican lawmakers amid a remarkable effort to ply two more congressional seats ahead of the 2026 midterms from a state delegation that currently sees a 7-2 split already favoring Republicans.”

Midwestern Democrats Left Alone in Redistricting Fight

October 11, 2025 at 12:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Party leaders in Missouri and Ohio are mobilizing campaigns to prevent the Republican-drawn maps from going into effect ahead of next year’s midterms, but both efforts have seen only modest support from Washington for their efforts.”

“The relative lack of investment, compared with the millions of dollars directed toward Democrats seeking to redraw California’s maps, reflects the uncertainty clouding Democrats’ endeavor.”

Biden Struggles to Adjust to Private Life as Trump Attacks

October 11, 2025 at 10:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Since Donald Trump entered the White House nearly nine months ago, most Democrats have wanted Joe Biden to stay on the sidelines — and the former president has mostly obliged,” the Washington Post reports.

“But behind the scenes, the lifelong politician is uneasily adjusting to a quieter, lower-profile life and remains bitter about being pushed to drop out of the 2024 race,”

“Biden remains a voracious consumer of news and regularly debates with his small team of advisers in Wilmington, Delaware, on whether to weigh in on Trump’s latest actions and statements — especially the direct, often unsubstantiated attacks on Biden in settings including an address to the United Nations and a rare gathering of military generals.”

How a Trade War With China Flared Back Up

October 11, 2025 at 10:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As the trade war between the United States and China kicked back into high gear after a period of tentative détente, it was clear just how vast the gulf of misunderstanding between the two superpowers had become,” the New York Times reports.

“President Trump said that he had been blindsided by China’s new controls on rare earth metals and products made from them, announced earlier in the week, amid what he had called a “very good” relationship in recent months. Chinese commentators insisted that Beijing was only responding to new attacks from the United States, and that Washington was the provocateur, because it had ramped up technological restrictions on China while professing good will.”

“Both sides also seemed convinced that they had the advantage and that the other side had overplayed its hand.”

Wall Street Journal: Four things to know about Beijing’s rare-earths bombshell.
