“House Republicans are proposing to charge migrants $1,000 to claim asylum, one of a series of new or increased fees on immigrants seeking to gain legal entry into the United States that is part of their effort to curb immigration and pay for the Trump administration’s border crackdown,” the New York Times reports.
Top Private Equity Firm Forecasts Severe Recession

The tariff-driven slowdown could lead to stagflation—stagnant growth combined with high inflation—according to Apollo’s analysis.
Civil Rights Lawyers Leave En Masse
“The new head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division is dramatically reshaping the office to propel President Donald Trump’s social agenda, prompting the departure of about half of the division’s lawyers in recent weeks,” the Washington Post reports.
“Since being sworn in this month, civil rights director Harmeet Dhillon has redirected her staff to focus on combating antisemitism, anti-Christian bias, the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, and what Trump and his allies have described as Democrat’s ‘woke ideology.'”

Karl Rove Says Trump Is In ‘Very Bad Shape’
Karl Rove tore into President Trump, saying the president was in political trouble after his tariffs upended the economy, the Daily Beast reports.
Said Rove: “When it gets to the economy, he is in very bad shape. And it’s not only that he’s in the short term in bad shape, there’s also evidence in the poll that no matter—even if he gets his way on certain things like tariffs, that he’s not good in the long run.”

Exchange of the Day
President Trump was interviewed by Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic:
TRUMP: I think maybe one of the things I’ve been most successful with is foreign relations.
GOLDBERG: I think the Canadians would disagree.
TRUMP: Well, the Canadians. Here’s the problem I have with Canada: We’re subsidizing them to the tune of $200 billion a year. And we don’t need their gasoline; we don’t need their oil; we don’t need their lumber. We don’t need their energy of any type. We don’t need anything they have. I say it would make a great 51st state. I love other nations. I love Canada. I have great friends. Wayne Gretzky’s a friend of mine. I mean, I have great friends. I said to Wayne, “I’m gonna give you a pass, Wayne.” I don’t want to ruin his reputation in Canada. I said, “Just pretend you don’t know me.” But they’re great people.
You know, they do 95 percent of their business with us. Remember, if they’re a state, there’s no tariffs. They have lower taxes. We have to guard them militarily.
GOLDBERG: You seriously want them to become a state?
TRUMP: I think it would be great.
White Evangelicals Stand Out in Their Support of Trump

Also eye-opening: 69% rate the ethics of top Trump administration officials as excellent or good and 57% say they trust what Trump says more than what previous presidents said.

100 Days of Chaos
From the Financial Times editorial board:
“‘Flooding the zone’ was a strategy devised by Donald Trump’s first-term adviser Steve Bannon to generate such a blur of news that the media could not keep track. Trump has elevated it in his second term to a method of governing. The blizzard of executive orders in the first 100 days of Trump 2.0 outstrips, by far, even that in Franklin Roosevelt’s first term.”
“Yet FDR inherited an economic crisis and set about reforms that changed America for the better. Trump inherited one of the strongest economies of any recent president. In trying to remake the US in his own image he has created crises that threaten immense long-term harm to the American republic, and its place in the world.”

Trump Taunts Canadians as They Head to the Polls
President Trump, on Truth Social:
“Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st. State of the United States of America.”
“No more artificially drawn line from many years ago. Look how beautiful this land mass would be. Free access with NO BORDER. ALL POSITIVES WITH NO NEGATIVES. IT WAS MEANT TO BE!”

Even Some Republicans Say Trump Is Going Too Far
Aaron Blake: “While Republican-leaning voters still overwhelmingly back him — and few express regret for their votes — many of them say Trump is going too far. And that might actually undersell how many truly feel this way.”
“It hasn’t registered any kind of large-scale GOP backlash. But it’s clear that Trump is testing the patience even of his fellow partisans with his myriad power grabs and brazen actions.”
Europe Fears Trump Will Walk Away from Ukraine Talks
“European and Ukrainian officials fear Donald Trump is on the brink of walking away from peace negotiations with Kyiv and Moscow, potentially using minor progress in talks as an ‘excuse’ to say his job is done,” the Financial Times reports.
“Following talks with the US side in recent days, European and Ukrainian officials are convinced Trump is ready to seize any kind of breakthrough this week, which marks his first 100 days in office — even if it falls short of a long-term solution.”
Josh Hawley at War with His Party
New York Times: “Since his arrival to the Senate in 2019 at the age of 39 as its youngest member, Hawley has charted two seemingly parallel courses: as a full-throttle champion of socially conservative causes and, somewhat less noisily, as a populist who aligns himself with Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent, on many populist issues.”
“Mr. Hawley may be a lonely voice, but he underscores a central question of the second Trump term: What will the president do to improve the lives of the working-class Americans who voted him back into office?”
Treasury Secretary Not Worried About Empty Shelves
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that he is “not at present” worried about empty shelves at retailers, ABC News reports.
Said Bessent: “We have great retailers, I assume they pre-ordered. I think we’ll see some elasticity. I think we’ll see replacement and the we’ll see how quickly the Chinese want to de-escalate.”
