Trump’s Moment of Truth

June 17, 2025 at 7:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “President Donald Trump will gather his closest military advisers in the Situation Room this morning as he weighs perhaps the most consequential decision of his presidency: whether to join Israel’s bombardment of Iran. Trump’s sudden dash back to D.C. last night, mid-way through the G7 leaders’ summit in Canada — and shortly after urging all 10 million residents of Tehran to evacuate the city — gave the unshakable impression that an American attack is now imminent. But we’ve seen no U.S. military activity as yet, and there’s some counter-evidence this morning that the president still hopes to cut a deal. Nobody knows for sure how this plays out.”

“But it’s hard to overstate the significance of this moment. American involvement in this war could end Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and even topple its autocratic government — reshaping the Middle East for decades to come. But it would be fraught with political risk. The history books are littered with leaders whose reputations never recovered from overseas folly.”

Trump on Truth Social: “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong!”

He added later: “I have not reached out to Iran for ‘Peace Talks’ in any way, shape, or form.”

Senate Republicans Have Tough Negotiations Ahead

June 17, 2025 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republican leaders have their work cut out for them,” Punchbowl News reports.

“The Senate Finance Committee’s mix of tax policies and Medicaid cuts are raising alarms for several GOP senators, threatening the leadership’s path to 51 votes. House Republicans also have major problems with the Senate GOP leadership’s proposed changes, as released Monday by the committee.”

“Senate GOP leaders desperately want to work out problems with the House now to avoid a formal conference. But they also need to sell their own senators.”

China Is Unleashing a New Export Shock on the World

June 17, 2025 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two decades ago, China shocked the United States with its ability to make and ship things fast and inexpensively on a scale never before seen. The resulting surge of exports reshaped America’s economy and its politics,” the New York Times reports.

“Today, a new China shock is cascading across the globe from Indonesia to Germany to Brazil.”

“As President Trump’s tariffs start to shut China out of the United States, its biggest market, Chinese factories are sending their toys, cars and shoes to other countries at a pace that is reshaping economies and geopolitics.”

Washington Post: Minnesota senator confronts colleague for “terrible” post on shooting.

Lobbyists Scramble to Kill $100 Billion ‘Revenge Tax’

June 17, 2025 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Business lobbyists are working to kill a tax measure embraced by Republican lawmakers that would punish companies based in countries that try to collect new taxes from American firms,” the New York Times reports.

“On Monday, Senate Republicans unveiled their domestic policy bill, which included a so-called revenge tax on foreign companies. That tax would punish companies based in countries that either adhere to the terms of a 2021 global minimum tax agreement or impose digital services taxes on American technology companies.”

“Last month, House Republicans passed a bill that would quickly impose the new tax. The Senate bill, seemingly in response to business concerns, would delay enforcing the provision until 2027.”

June 17, 2025 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal jury in Colorado on Monday found that one of the nation’s most prominent election conspiracy theorists, MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, defamed a former employee for a leading voting equipment company after the 2020 presidential election,” Politico reports.

“The employee, Eric Coomer, was awarded $2.3 million in damages. He had sued after Lindell called him a traitor and accusations about him stealing the election were streamed on Lindell’s online media platform.”

June 17, 2025 at 5:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Battery manufacturing began to take off in the United States in recent years after Congress and the Biden administration offered the industry generous incentives,” the New York Times reports.

“But that boom now appears to be stalling as the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers try to restrict China’s access to the American market.”

Senate Republicans Cool to Tax Plan Proposal

June 17, 2025 at 4:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate GOP leaders are facing early pushback over a key plank of their ‘big, beautiful bill’ just hours after rolling it out, underscoring the work that remains to bring the legislation to the floor next week,” Politico reports.

“The briefing Monday was designed to explain the panel’s rationale, answer questions and alleviate any anxieties. But immediate reaction from lawmakers across the ideological spectrum upon that meeting’s conclusion indicated leadership has a ways to go — especially as Republicans still hope to meet their self-imposed July Fourth deadline for clearing the larger bill for Trump’s signature.”

Pentagon Expands Middle East Response

June 17, 2025 at 4:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Pentagon is expanding its military presence in the Middle East and Europe in response to worsening hostilities between Israel and Iran, sending refueling planes and an additional aircraft carrier among the resources dispatched,” the Washington Post reports.

“More than two dozen tanker planes were deployed from the United States to Europe on Sunday and Monday, a movement that U.S. officials linked to commanders’ desire for options should American facilities near the warring countries face a direct threat. Flight-tracking data shows the refueling aircraft along with some heavy transport jets took off from points across the U.S. and landed hours later at air bases in Spain, Greece, Germany, Italy and Scotland. Among them were KC-135 Stratotankers and KC-46 Pegasuses.”

How the Trump Era Changed Trump

June 17, 2025 at 4:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ten years after a self-professed real estate tycoon and reality television star announced he was running for president, the country and its politics have irrevocably changed, my colleague Peter Baker wrote today,” the New York Times reports.

“The man himself isn’t quite the same, either.”

“President Trump is still the attention-loving, payback-obsessed main character that he was in 2015. But he learned during his first term what glass he could break if he only had a hammer — while his four years out of office drove him to turn grievance into vengeance.”

Trump Team Proposes Iran Talks

June 17, 2025 at 2:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The objective would be to discuss a diplomatic initiative involving a nuclear deal and an end to the war between Israel and Iran.”

Trump Leaves G7 Summit Early

June 17, 2025 at 12:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump on Monday abruptly left a Group of 7 summit Canada, where he joined other leaders in signing a statement criticizing Iran, to deal with the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump had previously refused to sign the statement, but decided to do so when the draft language was adjusted.”

Wall Street Journal: “In leaving early, Trump abandoned several conversations on trade and global security, aimed at easing tensions over tariffs and other issues.”

Washington Post: “Other presidents, including Trump in his first term, have cut short trips to the G-7 and similar international meetings in recent years. In 2023, for example, President Joe Biden shortened a trip to the Pacific region, skipping stops in Papua New Guinea and Australia to deal with the U.S. debt crisis.”

“But Trump’s announcement here came in a far more ominous context as the United States expands its military presence in the Middle East.”

Before leaving Canada, Trump said in a cryptic post: “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”

Last-Chance Diplomacy or a Bunker-Busting Bomb?

June 17, 2025 at 12:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is weighing a critical decision in the four-day-old war between Israel and Iran: whether to enter the fray by helping Israel destroy the deeply buried nuclear enrichment facility at Fordo, which only America’s biggest ‘bunker buster,’ dropped by American B-2 bombers, can reach,” the New York Times reports.

“If he decides to go ahead, the United States will become a direct participant in a new conflict in the Middle East, taking on Iran in exactly the kind of war Mr. Trump has sworn, in two campaigns, he would avoid. Iranian officials have already warned that U.S. participation in an attack on its facilities will imperil any remaining chance of the nuclear disarmament deal that Mr. Trump insists he is still interested in pursuing.”

CNN: “Israel is sending clear signals, including through former senior officials, that it hopes the US will ultimately join the conflict and use its unique military edge to destroy the Iranian nuclear complex at Fordow, which is buried deep underground.”

Wall Street Journal: Iran looks to Trump and nuclear talks as escape hatch as attacks intensify.

Trump Renews Embrace of Putin Amid Rift With Allies

June 17, 2025 at 12:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump could have opened by talking about trade. He could have discussed the wars in the Middle East or the long-running, brutal war in Ukraine,” the New York Times reports.

“But there was something else that appeared to be top of mind for Mr. Trump during Monday’s meeting in Canada of the leaders of the Group of 7 industrialized nations: President Vladimir Putin of Russia.”

“He went on to blame former President Barack Obama and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada for kicking Russia out, and argued that its inclusion in the group would have averted the war in Ukraine.”

Politico: Macron says he’s still confident U.S. will back further Russia sanctions.
