Republicans Go All In on Anti-Trans Messaging

October 10, 2025 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican gubernatorial nominee Winsome Earle-Sears and her conservative allies have gone all in on anti-trans messaging in the Virginia governor’s race, launching more frequent attacks — and taking those attacks further — than Donald Trump’s campaign did in 2024,” NOTUS reports.

“It won’t be a one-off escalation.”

“Earle-Sears’ increased focus on transgender issues is a preview of the Republican Party’s message in the 2026 midterm election, according to political strategists in both parties. They describe the Virginia contest as a model for Republicans in key congressional and statewide races, with candidates prioritizing transgender issues more than they did in 2024, even at the expense of longtime conservative causes like crime, immigration and even the economy.”

UPS Is Disposing of U.S. Bound Packages

October 10, 2025 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Thousands of U.S.-bound packages shipped by UPS are trapped at hubs across the country, unable to clear the maze of new customs requirements imposed by the Trump administration,” NBC News reports.

“As packages flagged for customs issues pile up in UPS warehouses, the company told NBC News it has begun ‘disposing of’ some shipments.”

Record-High 62% Say Government Has Too Much Power

October 10, 2025 at 8:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Sixty-two percent of Americans say the federal government has too much power, with most of the rest saying the government’s power is about right. This latest reading, the first in President Donald Trump’s second term, is up from 51% a year ago and is the highest in Gallup’s trend since 2002, by two percentage points.”

Peter Thiel Warns of ‘the Antichrist’ and U.S. Destruction

October 10, 2025 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tech billionaire Peter Thiel recently warned that Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and critics of technology or artificial intelligence are “legionnaires of the Antichrist” in private lectures on Christianity that connected government oversight of Silicon Valley to an apocalyptic future, the Washington Post reports.

“In the four, roughly two-hour lectures, which began last month and culminated Monday at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, Thiel laid out his religious views to a sold-out audience told to keep the contents ‘off-the-record.'”

“He argued that those who propose limits on technology development not only hinder business but threaten to usher in the destruction of the United States and an era of global totalitarian rule, according to the recordings.”

GOP Governor Slams Trump’s Troop Deployments

October 10, 2025 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) “criticized President Trump’s deployment of national guard troops to Chicago, Illinois, and Portland, Oregon, against the will of officials there — and said he thinks Trump’s actions violate the U.S. Constitution,” VT Digger reports.

Said Scott: “From what I’m seeing, I just think it’s unnecessary. It further divides and threatens people. We need stability right now in this country — we don’t need more unrest.”

He added: “I don’t think our guard should be used against our own people. I don’t think the military should be used against our own people. In fact, it’s unconstitutional. Unless, of course, there’s an insurrection, much like we saw Jan. 6 a few years ago.”

Norway Braces for Trump Reaction to Peace Prize Snub

October 10, 2025 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Now Norway waits. Trump isn’t shy about his grudges (as the United Nations learned last month about a decades-old renovation contract, of all things). As he and his people have ratcheted up ‘The Peace President’ rhetoric — emboldened no doubt by a ceasefire in Gaza — Norway has become increasingly worried about the diplomatic and economic fallout from a snub. For one, it still lacks a trade deal with the US.”

Republicans See No ‘Blue Wave’ on Horizon

October 10, 2025 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Dispatch: “In a striking reversal from Donald Trump’s first term, Republicans are cautiously optimistic about their prospects ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. They are content with the president’s provocative unconventionality but concerned about the most normal of political concerns: the potential for a voter backlash over the economy.”

“Eight years ago, Republicans approached the midterm elections with dread. Trump’s unorthodox style and polarizing rhetoric shocked voters, fueling early and sustained dissatisfaction with his leadership that carried Democrats to a takeover of the House of Representatives on Election Day 2018 despite a booming economy.”

“This time around, he’s not just communicating controversially, but governing as such: deploying military troops domestically, ignoring congressional spending directives, siccing the Justice Department on political foes, conducting mass deportations, threatening First Amendment rights—the list goes on. Yet Republicans aren’t worried.”

María Corina Machado Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

October 10, 2025 at 5:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who built a powerful social movement and has been living in hiding since last year, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday,” the New York Times reports.

“The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised ‘her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.’”

“Ms. Machado emerged from Venezuela’s political sidelines and corralled the country’s fractious opposition behind her ahead of the 2024 election. That followed years of political apathy in Venezuela, where the government of President Nicolás Maduro crushed protests and arrested dissidents, helping to spur an enormous exodus from the country.”

Shutdown Will Drag Into Third Week

October 10, 2025 at 5:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “For a moment on Thursday, there was a glimmer of hope that the Senate could find a path out of the shutdown. But by the end of the night, senators were heading home for a four-day weekend more entrenched than at any point since the impasse began.”

“The possibility of a lengthy shutdown is growing more realistic by the day barring some dramatic shift. President Donald Trump may have to be the one to initiate that about face, although he’s been preoccupied with the Israel-Hamas peace deal, immigration and tariff fights, and sending National Guard troops into Democratic-run cities, among other things.”

The U.K.’s Conservative Meltdown Looks Familiar

October 10, 2025 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Martin: “What I saw at the Conservative Party conference here this week was a party and country lagging behind its American cousins on the right — but quickly and ominously catching up. The Tories may be out of power, and in some polls sliding to a stunning fourth place, but their dismal straits offer lessons for both parties across the Atlantic as well as the mainstream parties in Europe’s two other dominant economies.”

Democrats Try To Turn Up Pressure On GOP

October 10, 2025 at 5:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are increasing pressure on certain GOP lawmakers in the shutdown messaging war, the latest being a new ad buy from the DNC,” Deadline reports.

“The six-figure buy will include digital ads on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, along with billboards and bus shelters in Republican districts.”

Israeli Military Says Cease-Fire Is in Effect

October 10, 2025 at 5:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Israeli military said on Friday that a cease-fire had come into effect at noon and that its soldiers were repositioning themselves within Gaza,” the New York Times reports.

GOP Governor Criticizes Trump’s Troop Deployment

October 9, 2025 at 11:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican and the chairman of the National Governors Association, criticized the deployment of Texas National Guard troops to Illinois as a violation of his beliefs in federalism and ‘states rights,’” the New York Times reports.

Said Stitt: “We believe in the federalist system — that’s states’ rights… Oklahomans would lose their mind if Pritzker in Illinois sent troops down to Oklahoma during the Biden administration.”

Federal Judge Blocks Troop Deployment in Chicago

October 9, 2025 at 10:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge temporarily blocked National Guard operations in the Chicago area, saying that the Trump administration’s version of events was “simply unreliable” and that deploying troops anywhere in the state would “only add fuel to the fire,” the New York Times reports.

Senate GOP Trial Balloon Gets Grounded

October 9, 2025 at 5:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “The idea, which Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Majority Whip John Barrasso say is under discussion, would involve giving Democrats a commitment to hold a vote on an extension of the enhanced Obamacare premium tax credits. This would be in exchange for Democratic votes to reopen the government.”

“There are several caveats here, however. For starters, there have been no formal offers or bipartisan discussions at the leadership level. And senators from both parties who have been involved in the informal bipartisan talks are thus far batting it down.”

“Neither party is backing off from their public positions. Republicans still say Obamacare subsidy talks can’t happen until the government is open, and that they can’t promise a particular outcome on the issue. Democrats want guarantees that an Obamacare deal will materialize, pass both chambers and be signed into law by President Donald Trump before the Open Enrollment Period begins on Nov. 1. This is something that Speaker Mike Johnson is hesitant to commit to.”

A Weak Case Against Letitia James

October 9, 2025 at 5:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Molly Roberts: “It’s hard to imagine a worse case than the one against James Comey—until you see the one against the attorney general of New York.”
