A Cornered Iran Gives Few Clues on Response to Bombings

June 22, 2025 at 8:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After the U.S. struck Iran’s most fortified nuclear sites, the regime’s clerical leaders are facing a perilous choice: hit back at the U.S. and risk a widening a war with two militarily superior foes, or return to nuclear talks where they would likely have to give up on nuclear enrichment and their ballistic-missile arsenal, two pillars of the country’s sovereignty,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Iran’s missile arsenal and military infrastructure have been degraded by Israel’s military strikes this month, with Israel claiming to have destroyed half of the country’s missile launchers. But the exact extent remains unclear, and Iran possesses other means to strike back such as cyberattacks and possibly terrorist proxies, or disrupting oil shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Uncertainty over how Iran might respond had stock and oil markets on edge, with U.S. futures moving slightly lower.”

Steve Bannon Takes on Fox News

June 22, 2025 at 7:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Steve Bannon has turned his opposition to bombing Iran into a fierce challenge to Fox News, Semafor reports.

Said Bannon: “People on the right are now confronting an unpleasant reality, a great unmasking: The Murdochs don’t put America’s interests first. There needs to be a thorough FARA investigation into Fox’s relationship with a foreign power.”

He added that “their audience is geriatrics — it’s people 70 and over,” and that Fox has “no stroke because it’s not an activist base.”

Iran Tries to Project a Sense of Normalcy

June 22, 2025 at 4:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran was reeling from American military attacks on its three main nuclear sites early Sunday, with four officials describing the mood in the government as one of defeat and national humiliation, amid divisions about how to respond,” the New York Times reports.

“Publicly, Iranian officials have tried to project a sense of normalcy even though nothing is normal. They have tried to downplay the damage to the nuclear facilities at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan, even though satellite images show the mountainous site of Fordo’s underground facilities punctured with huge holes.”

Republican’s Pregnancy Collided With Abortion Politics

June 22, 2025 at 4:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) arrived at the emergency room in May 2024 terrified by what she had just learned: Her pregnancy could kill her at any moment,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“It would only get worse. The Florida Republican needed a shot of methotrexate to help expel her ectopic pregnancy, in which there is no way for the embryo to survive. Her state’s six-week abortion ban had just taken effect. She said doctors and nurses who saw her said they were worried about losing their licenses or going to jail if they gave her drugs to end her pregnancy.”

“She began arguing her case. The staff resisted, she said, even though doctors earlier that day estimated she was just five weeks pregnant. There was no heartbeat, and her life was at risk. She pulled up the state law on her phone for hospital workers to read. She said she called the governor’s office late at night for help, but no one picked up.”

“Hours later, doctors finally agreed to give her the methotrexate.”

Ranked-Choice Voting Is Not Undemocratic

June 22, 2025 at 2:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

There are legitimate criticisms of ranked-choice voting — it can confuse voters and doesn’t always guarantee a majority winner.

But Annie Lowrey’s critique — using this week’s New York City Democratic mayoral primary as her case study — misses the mark.
