New York City Mayoral Race Attracts Many New Voters

June 23, 2025 at 4:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than double the number of New Yorkers cast ballots during the nine days of early voting compared to four years ago, including a substantial number of first-time voters,” Gothamist reports.

“Nearly 25% of early voters had not voted in a Democratic primary at any point between 2012 and 2024… Those figures represent a significant change from the 2021 Democratic mayoral primary, when 3% of early voters had never voted in a Democratic primary.”

“The trend would seem to favor state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, who has made mobilizing young and first-time voters a key campaign strategy.”

June 23, 2025 at 4:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump thanked Iran for giving “early notice” on its retaliatory missile attack, and called for ending the war between Israel and Iran, Axios reports.

Trump’s post, in which he called the Iranian response “very weak,” suggested he does not intend to retaliate and draw the U.S. further into the war.

June 23, 2025 at 3:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Quote of the Day

June 23, 2025 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Tell you what, six months in, six months in, Steve, and here we are, turning back on the campaign promises, and we bombed Iran on behalf of Israel. Yes, it was on behalf of Israel. We are entering a nuclear war, the World War III, because the entire world is going to erupt.”

— Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), talking to Steve Bannon on his podcast.

Said Murkowski: “Why are we afraid of a conference? Oh my gosh.”

Iran Gave Advance Warning of Retaliatory Attack

June 23, 2025 at 2:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Three Iranian officials familiar with the plans said that Iran gave advanced notice that attacks were coming, as a way to minimize casualties. The officials said Iran symbolically needed to strike back at the U.S. but at the same time carry it out in a way that allowed all sides an exit ramp; they described it as a similar strategy to 2020 when Iran gave Iraq heads up before firing ballistic missiles at an American base in Iraq following the assassination of its top general.”

Attacking Iran Without Congress’ Blessing

June 23, 2025 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Conor Friedersdorf: “Recall the last time that the United States began a war this consequential: George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq. Prior to invading, on October 10, 2002, Bush secured an authorization to use military force from Congress by wide margins in both chambers.”

“Even though the Iraq invasion was a mistake—something I have long believed—American democracy was better off for those votes, and not just because the Constitution assigns the war power to Congress. Debating the matter in the House and Senate helped educate lawmakers and the public about the arguments for and against the war, and left a record of who made claims that later proved incorrect. Prior to the vote, citizens could lobby their representatives, allowing for more participation in the process. And afterward, citizens could hold members of Congress accountable for their choices, not only in the next election but for the rest of the careers of everyone who cast a vote.”

Iran Launched the Same Number of Missiles as the U.S.

June 23, 2025 at 1:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran said its Monday night missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar matched the number of bombs dropped by the United States on its nuclear sites this weekend, signaling its likely desire to deescalate,” the AP reports.

‘I Love the New York City Mayoral Race’

June 23, 2025 at 1:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeffrey Blehar: “A confession: I love every single thing about this year’s New York City mayoral race. I read every story about it, hang on every update or embarrassing photograph that crosses my transom online, and check the polling and political markets daily.”

“Why would I, a person who lives nowhere near the Empire State, be so riveted by a local election? Because it is a saga of urban political despair that sings to my own corroded soul like few others this year. I love the chaos, the insanity, the sheer hopelessness of the choices on offer for New Yorkers, as only a longtime Chicago resident truly can.”

Trump Violated the War Powers Act

June 23, 2025 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reason: “In addition to violating the Constitution, the air strikes also violate the War Powers Act. Section 3 of that legislation requires that ‘the President in every possible instance shall consult with Congress before introducing United States Armed Forces into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances.'”

“There was no such advance consultation here, even though it was obviously ‘possible’ to do it (US strikes against Iran have been under consideration since Israel began its air campaign on June 13, if not before).”

Israel Gave Warning Calls to Top Iranian Generals

June 23, 2025 at 1:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the hours after Israel launched its first wave of strikes against Iran on June 13, killing top military leaders and nuclear scientists, Israeli intelligence operatives launched a covert campaign to intimidate senior officials with the apparent aim of dividing and destabilizing Tehran’s theocratic regime,” the Washington Post reports.

“People working for Israel’s security services who speak Persian, Iran’s primary language, called senior Iranian officials on their cellphones and warned them that they, too, would die unless they ceased supporting the regime of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader.”

“One of them estimated that more than 20 Iranians in positions of power were contacted.”

Iran Targets U.S. Military Bases in Qatar

June 23, 2025 at 1:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran launched missiles at U.S. bases in Qatar, officials said, as videos filmed by residents in Qatar showed flashes and explosions,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“That came about an hour after the country said it had closed its airspace ahead of an anticipated Iranian strike. A U.S. and an Israeli official said Iran had fired missiles toward Qatar.”

“Earlier, U.S. officials said Iran had begun moving missile launchers into place for a potential attack on U.S. forces in the Middle East.”

Israel Pounds Tehran Amid Growing Calls for De-Escalation

June 23, 2025 at 11:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Israel launched wide-ranging strikes on Tehran on Monday that it said targeted a paramilitary headquarters and a notorious prison, pressing on with its bombing campaign a day after the United States attacked three Iranian nuclear sites,” the New York Times reports.

“The new Israeli barrage, which a military spokesman said also included access routes to the Fordo nuclear enrichment site that the U.S. military bombarded on Sunday, came as Iran fired salvos of missiles that sent Israelis to huddle in shelters.”

No Revised Megabill Text Today

June 23, 2025 at 11:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans are unlikely to release full revised text of their sweeping domestic-policy bill Monday as they had hoped, reflecting a behind-the-scenes scramble to finalize the legislation for passage this coming week,” Politico reports.

“The timeline slip comes after GOP leaders saw setbacks over the weekend when Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that key pieces of their bill didn’t comply with the strict rules governing what can be included in a bill they are hoping to pass along strict party lines, skirting a 60-vote filibuster threshold.”

Politico: All eyes on the parliamentarian.

Majority of People Taken by ICE Had No Convictions

June 23, 2025 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New nonpublic data from Immigration and Customs Enforcement indicate that the government is primarily detaining individuals with no criminal convictions of any kind,” the Cato Institute reports.

“Also, among those with criminal convictions, they are overwhelmingly not the violent offenses that ICE continuously uses to justify its deportation agenda.”
