Trump Voters Have Had Enough

April 16, 2026 at 2:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Midterm elections are typically rough for an incumbent president’s party. But this year threatens to be brutal. Trump’s approval is lower right now than it was at this point ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, when Democrats won back the House in a historic blue wave.”

“Almost every new poll is a red flag for Republicans: Independents, young voters, and Latinos—groups that were crucial to Trump’s win in 2024—aren’t in the bag anymore. Even non-college-educated white Americans, once the president’s strongest group, have turned on him, according to a CNN polling average. Democratic-leaning voters are 17 points more likely than GOP-aligned voters to say they’re “extremely motivated” to vote in November.”

“Many Trump voters, in other words, have had it. At this point, it seems safe to declare that the historic coalition that powered the president’s second reelection is finished—kaput. The question is whether, with seven months to go until the midterms, any semblance of it can be revived.”

House Passes Bill to Protect Haitian Immigrants

April 16, 2026 at 2:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The House passed a bipartisan measure Thursday that would reinstate temporary legal protections for Haitian immigrants living in the U.S., with 11 members of the Republican conference breaking with the Trump administration to side with Democrats on the measure.”

“The 224-204 vote marks a rare GOP rebuke of President Trump’s agenda.”

Cuba Tried to Deliver Secret Letter Directly to Trump

April 16, 2026 at 2:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “In an unusual attempt to get President Trump’s ear, the grandson of Cuban leader Raúl Castro tapped a wealthy Havana entrepreneur to try to personally deliver a letter to the White House last week outside of regular diplomatic channels.”

“The letter was formatted similarly to a diplomatic note and carried an official Cuban seal… The attempted back-channel message to Trump proposed economic and investment agreements as well as sanctions relief, and also warned that the Cuban regime was preparing for a U.S. incursion…”

Panel Advances Trump’s Triumphal Arch

April 16, 2026 at 2:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A fine arts commission gave preliminary approval to President Trump’s plans for a triumphal arch in Washington, but the panel’s vice chairman suggested significant changes, including losing the statues of golden eagles and a winged angel atop the structure that account for a third of its height.”

“The Commission of Fine Arts, which is filled with Mr. Trump’s appointees, has an advisory role on the design of the project, but no enforcement power. It asked the administration to return with updated drawings before a final vote on the project.”

Tom Steyer Is Running the Most Expensive Campaign

April 16, 2026 at 2:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Steyer vaulted himself into the top tier of the wide-open race with a $120 million advertising blitz and a concerted courtship of the state’s progressive powers…”

“Steyer’s spending allowed him to steadily climb out of the low single digits and into the upper echelon of a brimming Democratic field, along with Swalwell and former Rep. Katie Porter. Now, with Swalwell out, Steyer is dominating the airwaves, with a rotation of ads so heavy he is nearly omnipresent in California’s expensive media markets.”

April 16, 2026 at 1:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News: “The U.S. government is set to launch an online portal next week that lets businesses request refunds for tariffs deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. But payouts won’t be automatic, and legal experts said businesses could face other obstacles getting their money back.”

April 16, 2026 at 1:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday renewed his threat to attack Iran’s electrical infrastructure if the cease-fire between Washington and Tehran failed.”

Said Hegseth: “Our forces are maximally postured to restart combat operations should this new Iranian regime choose poorly and not agree to a deal. We are locked and loaded on your critical dual-use infrastructure, on your remaining power generation and on your energy industry.”

He added: “I will say that my politics is one of inclusivity and one of showing up for everybody, and I will continue every day to represent that in our policies and in our campaign.”

Judge Sets New Limits on White House Ballroom

April 16, 2026 at 12:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “A federal judge set new limits on President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom, saying construction could proceed only on an underground portion of the project deemed necessary by the military, and not on the 90,000-square-foot above ground addition that Trump has eyed to entertain VIP guests.”

A Blasphemous President

April 16, 2026 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Elizabeth Bruenig: “Donald Trump’s recent outbursts at the pope— ‘WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,’ he said in one of his Truth Social posts—have renewed questions from observers about the president’s cognitive fitness and his apparently limitless capacity for blasphemy. His attacks also echoed old-fashioned fears about the Vatican as an insidious rival to American power.”

“But more than anything, Trump’s post betrayed a gross and fundamental misunderstanding of who the pope is and what Catholics believe he is empowered to do.”

Franklin Graham Defends Trump Over Jesus Image

April 16, 2026 at 11:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Franklin Graham, one of the nation’s most prominent Christian evangelists and a booster of President Donald Trump, said he does not believe the president knowingly depicted himself as Jesus in a now-deleted post on social media, dismissing the backlash as overblown,” Politico reports.

Said Graham: “When I looked at the illustration, I didn’t jump to the same conclusion as some. There were no spiritual references — no halo, there were no crosses, no angels. It was a flag, soldiers, a nurse, fighter planes, eagles, the Statue of Liberty, and I think this is a lot to do about nothing.”

April 16, 2026 at 11:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Utah has become a hotbed of measles cases in the United States, as a long-simmering outbreak continues to spread.”

“There have now been nearly 600 cases, mostly in children, since the outbreak began along the Utah-Arizona border last summer. Roughly one-third of those diagnosed have been so sick that they sought treatment in emergency rooms, mainly for severe dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhea. So far, 49 people have been hospitalized.”

Quote of the Day

April 16, 2026 at 10:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic, and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth.”

— Pope Leo XIV, on X.

Pope John David Vance the First

April 16, 2026 at 10:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Nichols: “Trump might have moved on, and Vance, a relatively recent convert to Catholicism, would have been able to stay out of a dustup between his president and his spiritual leader. But no. Vance just had to speak up. He could have taken his cues from John F. Kennedy or Mario Cuomo, Catholic politicians who were careful to note that their faith was personal and important to them, but that in their public life, they must govern as Americans according to the Constitution.”

“Vance decided on a different approach: The pope, he implied, wasn’t a very good, or very smart, Catholic.”
