Johnson Says Greene Not In the Loop
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) responded to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) criticism of GOP leaders ahead of Obamacare premiums spiking, saying she simply wasn’t in the loop as other Republicans discuss a path forward, Politico reports.
Said Johnson: “Congresswoman Greene does not serve on the committees of jurisdiction to deal with those specialized issues, and she’s probably not read that in on some of that, because it’s still been sort of in their silos of the people who specialize in those issues.”
Exchange of the Day
President Trump told reporters he’ll decide whether to pardon Ghislaine Maxwell, after the Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal of her conviction.
REPORTER: But she’s convicted of child sex trafficking.
TRUMP: Yeah, I mean, I’m gonna have to take a look at it.
There Is No Budget ‘Deal’ to Be Made
Garrett Graff: “Right now, at least publicly, the shutdown largely hinges on a deal to continue health subsidies for some 24 million Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace to buy insurance. But even if Democrats and Republicans come to an agreement on those expiring subsidies, no one has answered the fundamental question: How can Democrats count on those agreed-upon subsidies actually being paid?”
“These budget negotiations and the shutdown must be seen against the backdrop of the entire year of presidential overreach and constitutional violations. All year, we’ve seen this administration treat appropriations bills less as laws-to-follow and more like Lucy playing football with Charlie Brown. What should make this moment any different?”
“How can anyone in Congress — Democrats or Republicans — make a budget ‘deal’ with this administration if we now know the President is going to ignore implementing any part of the ‘deal’ he wants?”

Unknown Number Calling? It’s Not Random
The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking.
The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.
Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why I recommend Incogi: They delete your info from the web, monitor and follow up automatically, and continue to erase data as new risks appear. Flight Delays Begin as Air Traffic Staffing Shortages Worsen
“Flights into airports serving New York, Denver and the Los Angeles area were delayed on Monday night because of shortages of air traffic controllers, hours after the transportation secretary warned that flying could be disrupted by the government shutdown,” the New York Times reports.
Treasury Defends Minting a $1 Trump Coin
“The Trump administration on Monday defended its plan to mint a $1 coin bearing the image of President Trump despite the fact that an 1866 law dictates that only the deceased can appear on U.S. currency,” the New York Times reports.
“Initial designs for the coins released by the U.S. treasurer last week stirred controversy and accusations that the Trump administration was violating the law so that Mr. Trump could honor himself by putting his face on a coin. The 1866 law enshrined a tradition that individuals could appear on U.S. currency only posthumously to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy.”
“But in a post on Monday, the Treasury Department said that featuring Mr. Trump on a coin in celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday was authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020.”
