Republicans Have a Mess in Texas

October 7, 2025 at 1:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) officially entered the Republican Senate primary in Texas, complicating what has for months looked like a two-man battle between Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

But Hunt’s entry threatens to split the vote, making it harder for either Cornyn or Paxton to reach 50% and avoid a runoff.

October 7, 2025 at 1:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Tuesday appeared poised to back a free speech challenge to a Colorado law that bans conversion therapy aimed at young people questioning their sexual orientations or gender identities in a case likely to have national implications,” NBC News reports.

“If the court rules against the state, it could affect more than 20 states that have similar bans and raise new questions about other long-standing state health care regulations.”

Pennsylvania Court Race Has Major Implications for 2028

October 7, 2025 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro is wading into a state Supreme Court race this fall that both parties say has far-reaching implications for the 2028 presidential race, upcoming midterms and future redistricting in the premier battleground state,” CNN reports.

“Shapiro, a potential 2028 contender himself, appears in an ad launching Tuesday for three Democratic justices on the ballot in November, warning Pennsylvanians that ‘the threats to our freedoms are very real.'”

Johnson Says Greene Not In the Loop

October 7, 2025 at 11:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) responded to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) criticism of GOP leaders ahead of Obamacare premiums spiking, saying she simply wasn’t in the loop as other Republicans discuss a path forward, Politico reports.

Said Johnson: “Congresswoman Greene does not serve on the committees of jurisdiction to deal with those specialized issues, and she’s probably not read that in on some of that, because it’s still been sort of in their silos of the people who specialize in those issues.”

Exchange of the Day

October 7, 2025 at 10:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told reporters he’ll decide whether to pardon Ghislaine Maxwell, after the Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal of her conviction.

REPORTER: But she’s convicted of child sex trafficking.

TRUMP: Yeah, I mean, I’m gonna have to take a look at it.

There Is No Budget ‘Deal’ to Be Made

October 7, 2025 at 10:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Garrett Graff: “Right now, at least publicly, the shutdown largely hinges on a deal to continue health subsidies for some 24 million Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace to buy insurance. But even if Democrats and Republicans come to an agreement on those expiring subsidies, no one has answered the fundamental question: How can Democrats count on those agreed-upon subsidies actually being paid?”

“These budget negotiations and the shutdown must be seen against the backdrop of the entire year of presidential overreach and constitutional violations. All year, we’ve seen this administration treat appropriations bills less as laws-to-follow and more like Lucy playing football with Charlie Brown. What should make this moment any different?”

“How can anyone in Congress — Democrats or Republicans — make a budget ‘deal’ with this administration if we now know the President is going to ignore implementing any part of the ‘deal’ he wants?”

October 7, 2025 at 10:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

October 7, 2025 at 9:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy on Tuesday plans to call on the GOP to embrace a less overtly belligerent and oppositional posture,” Axios reports.

Ramaswamy will say the conservative moment is at a “fork in the road” and urge them to abandon its fixation on “owning the libs” in favor of a less overtly confrontational posture.

Unknown Number Calling? It’s Not Random

October 7, 2025 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking.

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why I recommend Incogi: They delete your info from the web, monitor and follow up automatically, and continue to erase data as new risks appear. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) broke with Republicans on Obamacare subsidies, saying that while she’s not a fan of the health care law, Congress must act to prevent a premium hike.

Treasury Defends Minting a $1 Trump Coin

October 7, 2025 at 8:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Monday defended its plan to mint a $1 coin bearing the image of President Trump despite the fact that an 1866 law dictates that only the deceased can appear on U.S. currency,” the New York Times reports.

“Initial designs for the coins released by the U.S. treasurer last week stirred controversy and accusations that the Trump administration was violating the law so that Mr. Trump could honor himself by putting his face on a coin. The 1866 law enshrined a tradition that individuals could appear on U.S. currency only posthumously to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy.”

“But in a post on Monday, the Treasury Department said that featuring Mr. Trump on a coin in celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday was authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020.”

Jay Jones Scandal Throws Virginia Democrats Into Crisis

October 7, 2025 at 8:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A scandal over resurfaced texts from Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones has Democrats in a catch-22,” Axios reports.

“A month before Election Day, pushing Jones off the ticket could fracture Democrats’ chances in a pivotal statewide race seen as a bellwether for next year.”

“But standing by him risks reinforcing Republican attacks about double standards on political violence.”
