Nithya Raman Surges Ahead of Spencer Pratt in L.A.

June 8, 2026 at 2:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Los Angeles Times: “Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman surged past reality television personality Spencer Pratt in the city’s mayoral primary election Sunday, capping off a five-day turnaround after she fell behind Pratt on election night.”

“Raman now sits in second place with Pratt in third, according to the latest vote count from the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder. Raman had 27.1% of the votes counted so far, and Pratt had 26.7%.”

“Both are vying to compete in a Nov. 3 runoff against Mayor Karen Bass, who garnered 34.7% of the vote as of Sunday, and whom the Associated Press already determined has qualified for the runoff.”

June 8, 2026 at 1:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “Democrats in mostly blue Maine are threatening to retaliate if Republican-led Nebraska changes how it awards Electoral College votes for the 2028 presidential election.”

“Several Democrats running to be Maine’s next governor have signaled they would support modifying state law to adopt a ‘winner take all’ electoral vote system in the presidential race if Nebraska did the same.”

Neo-Nazi Party Member Loses Close Race in Germany

June 8, 2026 at 1:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “For eight decades since World War II, members of neo-Nazi parties have never been directly elected mayor of any town in Germany, amid a postwar effort to shape its national identity around a rejection of the Nazi era.”

“On Sunday in a small town in eastern Germany, local residents came closer than ever to breaking with that consensus.”

“The runner-up in the mayoral election in the town, Aue-Bad Schlema, represents a fringe far-right party that Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has deemed an extremist group that poses a threat to the Constitution. The candidate, Stefan Hartung, says he is not a neo-Nazi, but acknowledges that he is also still a member of a larger party that Germany’s highest court has ruled is “similar in nature to National Socialism,” a formal term for Nazism.”

North Korea Is a Surprising Economic Success Story

June 8, 2026 at 1:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “North Korea is the world’s most unlikely growth story. Its economy is flourishing in ways not seen in years, aided by arms sales and troop deployments to Russia, supplies and financing from China, and the ability to flout international sanctions to import more energy, components and materials. Chinese leader Xi Jinping traveled to North Korea this week for his first foreign trip of the year.”

“The Kim regime slammed its borders shut during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has since reopened to only a select few outsiders, including Russian and Western travelers and diplomats. Those visitors describe a North Korea unrecognizable from the past, especially its capital, Pyongyang, where Kim and the country’s elite live.”

The New York Primary That Is All About Israel

June 8, 2026 at 1:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Not long ago, Dan Goldman was a hero of the resistance… Now, Goldman is struggling to hold on to his seat.”

“He has been fighting a Democratic primary challenge from Brad Lander, New York City’s former comptroller and a close ally of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The contest, in a district stretching from lower Manhattan into brownstone Brooklyn, has featured plenty of bile about Trump, promises of a more affordable city and picayune local disputes.”

“But the dominant issue has been some six-thousand miles away: Israel, and its war in Gaza.”

How SpaceX Became Part of America’s War Machine

June 8, 2026 at 1:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“SpaceX’s years of courting the national-security establishment are paying off,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The U.S. government is SpaceX’s largest single client, which the 24-year-old company identified as “Customer A” in securities filings ahead of its planned initial public offering. Revenue from the government, which totaled around $4 billion in 2025, is set to sharply climb over the next few years.”

“The Elon Musk-led company has combined its ability to pump out satellites and quickly launch rockets with savvy maneuvering of the Pentagon to secure high-value deals. Those agreements are putting SpaceX at the center of military and intelligence agencies’ plans for space.”

June 8, 2026 at 1:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.S. and Iran Peace Talks Stall

June 8, 2026 at 1:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The US and Iran appear to be making little progress toward an interim deal to end the war Washington and Israel began 100 days ago, as fresh attacks pile pressure on a fragile ceasefire.”

“The past week saw the worst flare-up in tensions since the truce started around April 8. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran are bogged down over the fate of billions of dollars of frozen Iranian assets and a parallel conflict between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.”

UK Brexit Vote Would Reverse if Held Today

June 8, 2026 at 1:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “A UK poll shows that a new Brexit referendum would reverse the vote that led to Britain’s departure from the European Union a decade ago.”

“Fifty-two percent of Britons think the UK should rejoin the EU, according to an Ipsos survey of 1,137 British adults conducted between May 14 and May 20. That’s the inverse of the mood in June 2016 when a comparable share of the electorate backed Brexit.”

Lawsuit Aims to Stop UFC Fights at White House

June 7, 2026 at 3:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “A political activist and a Vietnam veteran represented by an anti-corruption organization filed a lawsuit on Saturday challenging what it called the ‘night of cage fights’ that President Trump planned to hold at the White House as part of the celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary.”

“The lawsuit argues that the transformation of the grounds was never authorized by Congress, and that the event will serve as an extraordinary use of government space to benefit both the chief executive of UFC, Dana White, and Mr. Trump, who is an investor in UFC’s parent company.”

Iran Fires Missiles at Israel

June 7, 2026 at 3:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Iran fired missiles toward Israel on Sunday, after a deadly Israeli airstrike on Beirut hours earlier targeting the Tehran-backed militants Hezbollah, Israel’s military said.”

“It marks the first time Iran has targeted Israel during its ceasefire with the U.S. that went into force in early April.”

“The attack came after Tehran threatened to hit Israel and American bases in the Middle East in response to the airstrike on the Lebanese capital, the first time Israeli warplanes have targeted Beirut since a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was announced by the U.S. last week.”

Most Politicians Are Not Calling for Data Center Bans

June 7, 2026 at 10:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The political energy is slowly beginning to catch up to voter anger. Lawmakers in both parties who have touted the centers as economic boons in their states are backpedaling…”

“But few politicians are embracing grassroots demands for a pause or ban on data center construction, which some on the left see as a missed opportunity for Democrats to distinguish themselves ahead of a midterm election that they hope will hinge on cost-of-living concerns.”
