GOP Attempts to Kill Obamacare Keep Backfiring

October 12, 2025 at 2:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans have tried more than 70 times over the past 15 years to weaken or kill Obamacare. But their campaign keeps backfiring,” the Washington Post reports.

“The sweeping tax and spending bill President Donald Trump signed this summer got his party closer to that goal than ever before. Though never marketed as a repeal, it unraveled much of the law and is expected to eventually push millions of people who gained insurance since the Affordable Care Act’s passage off the rolls.”

“Even that legislative achievement is proving politically fraught.”

Black Unemployment Is Surging Again

October 12, 2025 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joblessness for Black workers is rising again, two years after reaching a record low. It’s a troubling indicator: Joblessness often spikes higher for historically marginalized groups during economic downturns, and takes longer to fall,” the New York Times reports.

“This time, the Trump administration’s assault on diversity programs and cuts to the federal work force could make it even more difficult for Black workers to recover when conditions improve.”

China Signals Defiance in Face of Trump’s Tariffs

October 12, 2025 at 2:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Chinese government has come out swinging in response to President Donald Trump’s threat Friday of 100 percent tariffs on China’s imports in response to Beijing’s new export curbs on rare earths,” Politico reports.

“In its first official reaction to that warning, Beijing on Sunday signaled that it will retaliate against any new levies that the Trump administration may impose on Chinese imports.”

“Beijing dismissed Trump’s concerns about the restrictions it announced last week — which will block exports that contain even trace amounts of Chinese rare earths essential to U.S. manufacturers — as a ‘classic case of ‘double standards.’ And said the export ban is a justified response to what it described as ‘discriminatory’ Trump administration trade curbs on items including high-end semiconductors.”

Are Democrats About to Blow It in Maine?

October 12, 2025 at 12:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “Maine is the most important Senate race in the country. Democrats have a narrow path to a majority, but they have no path if they cannot defeat Susan Collins in a state Kamala Harris won by seven points last year. Collins is the last Republican representing a truly blue state.”

“Losing Maine wouldn’t just hurt Democrats in the near term; it would make it much less likely that a new Democratic president would have a Senate majority in 2029. The Senate map is so biased toward Republicans that we simply cannot afford to lose a single winnable seat.”

“The high stakes really make me wonder what the hell Senate Democrats are doing in Maine.”

Government Shutdown Tests Everyone’s Patience

October 12, 2025 at 11:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Inside the marbled and frescoed halls, the days have taken on a tedious rhythm. Senators repeat the same talking points. Party leaders hold news conferences and give interviews several times a day, at different locations around the Capitol grounds, blaming each other for the impasse. They haul out placards to claim favorable polling and quote each other’s flubs. Nothing changes.”

“Senators of both parties said this government shutdown seems different from other standoffs they have suffered through.”

Washington Post: The pain from the government shutdown is about to hit the public.

Trump to Travel to Israel for Hostage Release

October 12, 2025 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump was scheduled to travel to Israel on Sunday in anticipation of the return of hostages who have been held in the Gaza Strip for more than two years,” the New York Times reports.

“The hostages were expected to be released Sunday or Monday as part of the cease-fire deal with Hamas to end the fighting that began with the militant group’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.”

Trump Bringing Back Scores of CDC Experts Fired in Error

October 12, 2025 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Saturday raced to rescind layoffs of hundreds of scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who were mistakenly fired on Friday night in what appeared to be a substantial procedural lapse,” the New York Times reports.

“Among those wrongly dismissed were the top two leaders of the federal measles response team, those working to contain Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, members of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, and the team that assembles the C.D.C.’s vaunted scientific journal, The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.”

Ann Keller: “It’s not even the first time that, in their zeal to get rid of people, they’ve had to immediately hire people back. They are so steeped in their own anti government propaganda that they only see the need for experts in super obvious cases like the nuclear stockpile or hemorrhagic fever.”

Trump Escalates His Use of Power to Target Democrats

October 12, 2025 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s move to cancel projects in Democratic states during the government shutdown has prompted a furor and cries of partisanship,” the Washington Post reports.

“But it is only the latest example of his administration’s efforts to use power in ways that damage blue states and help red ones.”

Can Israel Repair Its Ties to Americans?

October 12, 2025 at 6:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The war in Gaza may finally be ending, after two years of bloodshed and destruction. But among the damage that has been done is a series of devastating blows to Israel’s relationship with the citizens of its most important and most stalwart ally, the United States,” the New York Times reports.

“Israel’s reputation in the United States is in tatters, and not only on college campuses or among progressives. For the first time since it began asking Americans about their sympathies in 1998, a New York Times poll last month found that slightly more voters sided with the Palestinians than with Israelis.”

Hamas Ready to Hand Over 20 Living Israeli Hostages

October 12, 2025 at 6:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hamas has told Israel it has 20 living Israeli hostages in hand and is ready to begin releasing them as early as Sunday,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Judges Fault Supreme Court’s Emergency Orders

October 11, 2025 at 11:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than three dozen federal judges have told The New York Times that the Supreme Court’s flurry of brief, opaque emergency orders in cases related to the Trump administration have left them confused about how to proceed in those matters and are hurting the judiciary’s image with the public,” the New York Times reports.

“At issue are the quick-turn orders the Supreme Court has issued dictating whether Trump administration policies should be left in place while they are litigated through the lower courts. That emergency docket, a growing part of the Supreme Court’s work in recent years, has taken on greater importance amid the flood of litigation challenging President Trump’s efforts to expand executive power.”

Trump Says Military Will Be Paid Despite Shutdown

October 11, 2025 at 3:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said he had directed the Pentagon to pay military servicemembers next week, with the government shutdown expected to continue amid an impasse in Congress,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Saturday that he had directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to ‘use all available funds’ to make sure troops receive their paychecks on Oct. 15. Military servicemembers have been expected next week to miss their first full paychecks since the shutdown began.”

Politico: “To scrounge up enough money to pay the troops, the Pentagon is tapping into its research and development accounts to use money Congress made available for two years.”

Arab States Expanded Cooperation with Israeli Military

October 11, 2025 at 3:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Even as key Arab states condemned the war in the Gaza Strip, they quietly expanded security cooperation with the Israeli military,“ the Washington Post reports.

“Those military ties were thrown into crisis after Israel’s September airstrike in Qatar, but could now play a key role in overseeing the nascent ceasefire in Gaza.”

“Over the past three years, facilitated by the United States, senior military officials from Israel and six Arab countries came together for a series of planning meetings in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan and Qatar.”

October 11, 2025 at 12:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment
