Artemis II Crew Flies Around the Moon

April 6, 2026 at 12:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Today’s Artemis II lunar flyby will be livestreamed on YouTube at 1 p.m. ET.

The four astronauts onboard will travel farther from Earth than any humans in history — breaking the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970.

The mission serves as a dress rehearsal meant to test vehicles that will be used to help land humans on the lunar surface in potentially two years.

April 6, 2026 at 11:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran on Monday rejected the latest ceasefire proposal and instead said it wants a permanent end to the war, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s ultimatum loomed within hours,” the AP reports.

Madman or Showman?

April 6, 2026 at 11:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After a weekend barrage of erratic posts on Truth Social, Donald Trump has left a familiar question hanging in the air: what, exactly, is the plan in Iran?

There are a few competing theories — none especially reassuring as we approach Trump’s deadline of Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Is Trump About To Nuke Iran?

April 6, 2026 at 10:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Garrett Graff: “The simple fact that we can’t say ‘definitely no, absolutely not, for sure’ is an astounding commentary on how unhinged and dangerous his presidency has become and how far off the rails the war with Iran has gone as Trump flails about with no plan, no strategy, no exit, and a global economy that day-by-day is reeling from the biggest geopolitical oil shock in history.”

“It sets the next 36 or so hours up as one of the weirdest and scariest moments in geopolitics of our lifetimes.”

The Next Coup Attempt

April 6, 2026 at 10:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Timothy Snyder: “We are seven months away from the most consequential midterm election in the history of the United States. Meanwhile, we are fighting a war. These are the structural conditions for a coup attempt in which a president tries to nullify elections and take permanent power as a dictator.”

“If we see this, we can stop it, overcome the movement that brought us to this point, and make a turn towards something better.”

New Video Contradicts ICE Agent’s Claim

April 6, 2026 at 10:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times has obtained video of an incident in Minneapolis during which an ICE agent shot a fleeing Venezuelan immigrant and then claimed he had been attacked.

“The video contradicts the agent’s claim that three assailants had beaten him with a shovel and broom for roughly three minutes before he opened fire. Instead, the confrontation depicted in the video lasts about 12 seconds and shows two men struggling with the agent. It shows no sustained attack with a shovel.”

Republicans Will Spend Big to Keep the Senate

April 6, 2026 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The leading super PAC for Senate Republicans is unveiling a nearly $350 million plan to preserve control of the Senate, aiming tens of millions of dollars at red-leaning states including Alaska, Iowa and Ohio as the midterm elections grow more competitive.”

“Top officials at the group, the Senate Leadership Fund, described its spending priorities to The New York Times, revealing what Republicans see as an eight-state battleground in 2026.”

“The super PAC is reserving television time to defend five Senate seats held by Republicans: Ohio, North Carolina, Maine, Iowa and Alaska. It is also targeting three Democratic-held seats in Michigan, Georgia and New Hampshire. The ads are set to begin airing in early September.”

A Gift to Democrats in California

April 6, 2026 at 10:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump just stepped into California’s governor’s race — and may have given Democrats a huge gift.

That’s because he endorsed Steve Hilton, a move that immediately clarifies the Republican field but complicates the broader electoral math.

No One Recalls Official Who ‘Teleported’ to Waffle House

April 6, 2026 at 9:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The New York Times looks into claims by Gregg Phillips, a top official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, who says “that he once teleported to a Waffle House in Rome, a city of 39,000 people northwest of Atlanta.”

“Indeed, among roughly two dozen workers and regulars interviewed this week at Rome’s three Waffle House locations, none said they were aware of anyone traveling to the 24-hour restaurants by paranormal means, despite their reputation as powerful magnets for the sort of idiosyncratic characters who tend to surf the psychic fringes of the American South.”

Sam Altman Calls for Superintelligence New Deal

April 6, 2026 at 9:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Axios that AI superintelligence “is so close, so mind-bending, so disruptive that America needs a new social contract — on the scale of the Progressive Era in the early 1900s, and the New Deal during the Great Depression.”

“The threats of inaction or slow action are grave, Altman warns — widespread job loss, cyberattacks, social upheaval, machines man can’t control. The two most immediate threats, he said, are cyberattacks and biological attacks.”

Justices Clear Path to Dismiss Steve Bannon Case

April 6, 2026 at 9:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for President Donald Trump’s administration to drop the government’s criminal case against Steve Bannon, a former White House adviser convicted in 2022 of defying a subpoena from lawmakers investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.”

“The Supreme Court’s decision follows a move by federal prosecutors in February to drop the indictment brought during President Joe Biden’s administration. Both the Justice Department and Bannon had asked the high court to toss out an appeals court ruling upholding the conviction and send the case back to a trial court so that the original charges against him could be dismissed.”

Trump Invokes Religious Rhetoric in Iran War

April 6, 2026 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump and other U.S. officials cast the rescue of a U.S. airman in Iran as an “Easter miracle” on Sunday, framing the operation in religious terms that portrayed the war as a just cause and divinely ‌blessed, Reuters reports.

Trump Risks Faith in U.S. Role as Guardian of Shipping

April 6, 2026 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Of all the things Donald Trump has done to disrupt global commerce, from levying punitive tariffs to tearing up trade deals, few would be as consequential as withdrawing and leaving the rest of the world to secure the Persian Gulf.”

“The move, which the US president has repeatedly threatened as his war with Iran drags on, would represent a break with decades of US policy keeping open the sea lanes that carry four-fifths of the $35 trillion global goods trade. Even the threat of reducing security for the Strait of Hormuz risks shaking confidence in a pillar of the world economy, as well as American wealth and power.”

Ruben Gallego Weighs a Presidential Bid

April 6, 2026 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) is teasing a presidential run, NBC News reports.

Said Gallego: “Obviously, like any other elected official, especially ones that won red states in 2024, we have to look at it.”

He added: “No matter who runs, even if it’s not me, the candidate that wins in 2028 is going to have to get the Latino vote back to at least 62%. That is the ‘Pass Go’ line, collect $200 on the Monopoly board. We didn’t hit that in 2024 and that’s why we find ourselves in this situation.”

Iran Vows to Step Up Attacks

April 6, 2026 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran warned that it would retaliate against any attack on its critical energy infrastructure, in an apparent response to President Trump’s threat to target power plants and bridges unless Iran fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz,” the New York Times reports.

Associated Press: Israel warns public against new Iranian missile barrage.

Trump Keeps World Off Balance

April 6, 2026 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “One minute, President Trump says the war in Iran is nearly over. The next he says it will continue for weeks. He brags that Iran has been ‘eviscerated,’ but then vows that the fighting will go on. A huge bombardment, he says, might begin in five days, or 10 days, or on Tuesday at precisely 8 p.m. Eastern.”

“If the president means what he says, the world could be about 24 hours from a devastating escalation in the war. But like the producer of a television cliffhanger, Mr. Trump seems determined to keep everyone off balance.”

“On that, at least, he is succeeding.”

The Next Target for the U.S. and Israel Is Iran’s Economy

April 6, 2026 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. and Israel have a set of targets lined up in Iran designed to cripple the country’s economy and ensure the regime’s recovery from this war is long and painful,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Israel is awaiting authorization from Washington this week to begin striking Iran’s energy facilities, an Israeli official said, potentially undermining output in one of the world’s major oil-and-gas producers…”

“Striking the underpinnings of Iran’s economy would mark an escalation in the five-week-long war that is aimed at forcing Tehran to give up the economic leverage it has gained by slowing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz—the waterway through which 20% of the world’s oil flows. Trump has set a deadline of Tuesday evening for the strait to be opened.”
