NPR Gets $113 Million from Two Donors

April 17, 2026 at 3:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“NPR has received two of the largest gifts in the public media network’s existence, totaling $113 million,” NPR reports.

“They will go toward fueling innovation in NPR’s use of digital technology, increasing its connection with audiences, and ensuring the viability of public radio stations after Congress eliminated all federal funding for public media.”

Obama Featured in Virginia Redistricting Campaign

April 17, 2026 at 3:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Virginia voters could be forgiven for wondering where Barack Obama stands on gerrymandering.”

“The former president is appearing in videos and ads pushing Virginians to vote ‘Yes’ on a Democratic-backed referendum next week on whether to redraw the state’s House map to give the party more seats. But the Republican-backed ‘No’ side is running TV ads that highlight his past opposition to partisan gerrymandering.”

“The dueling Obama ads have confused voters, according to the referendum’s Democratic supporters, who have grown increasingly anxious about the vote in the final days before Election Day on Tuesday.”

Trump Says Iran Has Agreed to ‘Everything’

April 17, 2026 at 3:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told CBS News that Iran has “agreed to everything,” and will work with the U.S. to remove its enriched uranium.

He insisted that doing so will not involve U.S. ground troops. But when asked who would retrieve it, he would only say “our people.”

Said Trump: “No. No troops. We’ll go down and get it with them, and then we’ll take it. We’ll be getting it together because by that time, we’ll have an agreement and there’s no need for fighting when there’s an agreement. Nice right? That’s better. We would have done it the other way if we had to.”

America’s Orange Jesus

April 17, 2026 at 2:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Susan Glasser: “The point is simply this: in Trump 1.0, Orange Jesus was a snarky shorthand for the hypocrisy of Republicans who knew better but joined up with the cult of Trump anyway.”

“In Trump 2.0, Trump thinks he has actually become Orange Jesus.”

“How else to explain the President’s many otherwise inexplicable acts since returning to office? The gilding of the White House to resemble a profane copy of the Vatican, the ever more baroque lies, the slapping his name on everything, and, perhaps most of all, the repeated reminders that our leader recognizes no earthly limits on his power as he wages war in the Middle East and speaks of conquering other lands.”

Said Trump back in January: “There is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

Senate Bails Out Mike Johnson

April 17, 2026 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Senate passed a 10-day FISA extension on Friday, sending it to President Donald Trump’s desk ahead of Monday’s deadline and averting a lapse in authority,” Punchbowl News reports.

“But Senate Republicans have their work cut out for them as they attempt to clean up the House GOP mess. Speaker Mike Johnson’s Republican Conference is paralyzed on renewing FISA’s Section 702, underscored by a series of humiliating floor defeats Thursday night.”

“Senate Majority Leader John Thune hinted that senators could take the lead on a longer-term extension of the authority amid the House’s paralysis on the issue.”

Health Care Is Dead on Capitol Hill

April 17, 2026 at 2:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “While Democrats continue to champion lower health care costs on the campaign trail and prepare to hammer Kennedy on the issue, there is still little appetite among both Democrats and Republicans to team up and overcome the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster and achieve much of anything on health care –– whether it’s extending the ACA tax credits, codifying drug-pricing caps or something else.”

Trump Urged to Act on Iranian Site Feared Impervious

April 17, 2026 at 2:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Over the past year, U.S. airstrikes have crippled Iran’s nuclear program. Several Iranian nuclear facilities lie in ruins. And Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium — “nuclear dust,” as President Trump calls it — is thought to be deeply buried under rubble.”

“But even after a U.S. bombing raid last June and more than five weeks of attacks on Iran since February, one suspected nuclear site remains untouched. Experts say the underground facility, known as Pickaxe Mountain, is buried so deep that it may lie beyond the reach of America’s most powerful bunker-buster bombs.”

GOP Lawmaker Likens Trump to ‘Second Coming’ of Christ

April 17, 2026 at 1:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) likened President Trump to a “second coming” amid backlash over the president’s feud with Pope Leo XIV and his administration’s use of religious language when discussing the Iran conflict, NewsNation reports.

Said Nehls: “I believe that Donald Trump is better than sliced bread. I think he’s almost a second coming, in my humble opinion.”

Young Adults Fear the Impact of AI

April 17, 2026 at 1:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Young adults are scared and unprepared for the AI revolution upending their early career choices and prospects,” Axios reports.

“They tell pollsters they’re frightened, even angry, about AI’s fast arrival. They’re rightly unnerved by a tough job market for college grads. And most aren’t remotely equipped by schools to be AI-savvy.”

“This is a growing problem for just about everyone — kids, educators, employers and politicians.”

Strait Jacket

April 17, 2026 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Richard Haass: “The principal reality now is that neither the United States nor Iran would benefit from a resumption of fighting. We have all but run out of targets, and the Trump administration should have learned by now that bombing will not lead Iran to capitulate. Nor will it produce regime change.”

“As for Iran, it has already shown it is both willing and able to disrupt shipping and threaten the energy infrastructure of its neighbors. But carrying out such a threat at this stage would lead to the destruction of its own energy infrastructure, making economic recovery all but impossible.”

How Did the U.S. Run Out of Missiles in Iran?

April 17, 2026 at 12:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Garrett Graff: “We spend $800-billion-a-year on defense—but the US stockpiles barely lasted through a six-week-war.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

April 17, 2026 at 12:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stevie Wonder can even see how much this war is costing us. So, gas prices are going up. It’s almost $10 in California. And fertilizer’s going up. I mean, you name it, prices have gone up. And this dude, Dr. Jesus, ok, is wanting to spend $2 billion of your money every single day rather than help you get healthcare. Fuck his ass!”

— Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA), talking to reporters.

Lead Prosecutor Removed in Brennan Case

April 17, 2026 at 12:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The Justice Department has removed the career Miami federal prosecutor leading the investigation into John Brennan, after she resisted pressure to quickly bring charges against the former CIA director and prominent critic of President Donald Trump.”

Supreme Court Hands Win to Big Oil

April 17, 2026 at 12:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The Supreme Court on Friday sided with oil giant Chevron, ruling that it can fight an environmental damage lawsuit in federal court — a decision that could affect the outcomes of nearly a dozen other lawsuits that make similar allegations about the oil and gas industry.”

“The unanimous decision puts into question a $745 million state court judgment against Chevron to help restore coastal wetlands in Louisiana that were damaged as far back as World War II.”

Diplomatic Cables Show Iran War Is Damaging U.S.

April 17, 2026 at 12:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Iran war is risking America’s global security ties and damaging its reputation, especially among the world’s Muslims, according to a set of State Department cables,” Politico reports.

“The cables, dated Wednesday, described the fallout of the war for America’s standing in three countries in different parts of the world: Bahrain, Azerbaijan and Indonesia.”

Democratic Primary Challengers Stockpile Cash

April 17, 2026 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Candidates looking to take down sitting members of Congress in primaries are stockpiling cash as their races heat up, according to fundraising reports filed Wednesday — and it’s Democratic lawmakers who are mostly on defense,” NBC News reports.

“At least nine House Democrats and one Democratic senator, Ed Markey of Massachusetts, were outraised by their primary challengers in the first fundraising quarter of the year, suggesting the energy within the party that is clamoring for new leaders is fueling some of these contests.”
