House Panel Moves 3 Priority Bills Toward Floor Vote

April 28, 2026 at 8:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “House GOP leaders managed to finally clear a rule for the farm bill, a three-year FISA extension and a budget resolution for immigration enforcement spending, after a lengthy Rules Committee hearing Tuesday.”

“But some Republicans are already threatening to tank the rule when it heads to the floor Wednesday around 10:30 a.m. — leaving a huge task for Speaker Mike Johnson and his leadership team as they wrangle votes. Johnson can only lose a couple of GOP votes with full attendance for the party-line rule vote.”

King Charles Urges U.S. to Reject Isolationism

April 28, 2026 at 8:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “King Charles III called on the U.S. to maintain its leadership role in the world, and to support Ukraine and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, in a remarkably pointed speech for a monarch that urged Americans to resist the pull of isolationism.”

“Charles used his remarks to a joint session of Congress — the first such address by a British monarch in more than three decades — to argue for preserving the alliance between the UK and US. The king appealed to the shared heritage between the two nations, sprinkling his remarks with references to culture, religion and principles behind America’s decision to declare independence 250 years ago.”

Trump’s Defense Plan Draws Rare GOP Pushback

April 28, 2026 at 8:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “Key congressional Republicans are poised to break with Donald Trump on his proposed 44% raise for the Pentagon, a rare act of defiance that signals the president’s weakening grip on Washington as the midterm elections near and he quickly approaches the back half of his second term.”

Trump Called to Solve House GOP’s Internal Problems

April 28, 2026 at 8:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “House infighting is threatening to sink the GOP agenda on Capitol Hill. Now Republicans are hoping their most effective whip — President Donald Trump — is ready to come off the sidelines.”

“The push for the White House to take a more active role comes as the GOP finds itself stalemated on several fronts with no sign that they will be able to navigate a way forward without Trump’s direct intervention.”

Pentagon Asks Congress to Codify ‘Department of War’

April 28, 2026 at 3:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Pentagon has asked Congress to codify its “Department of War” renaming, saying it will cost nearly $52 million to complete and will not have a “significant impact” on President Trump’s fiscal 2027 defense budget request, The Hill reports.

Calling Trump a Tyrant Is Not a Call to Violence

April 28, 2026 at 3:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “To describe Donald Trump as a corrupt aspiring authoritarian is not to conclude that he should be murdered.”

“This ought to be a simple point to understand. Yet it is lost on a large swath of the American right, who insist that calling Trump what he is causes at least some of his opponents—among them, the accused shooter Cole Tomas Allen—to believe that violence is justified against the president.”

FCC Orders Review of ABC’s TV Licenses

April 28, 2026 at 3:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Federal regulators on Tuesday ordered a review of all station licenses owned by ABC, an extraordinary move to pressure a major television network whose programming has frequently angered President Trump.”

“The agency overseeing the review, the Federal Communications Commission, said in a filing that the review was related to an investigation into ABC’s diversity and inclusion policies. But it came in the middle of a fight this week between Mr. Trump and the network’s late night host, Jimmy Kimmel, that prompted the president to demand that ABC fire Mr. Kimmel.”

Trump’s Approval Sinks to 34%

April 28, 2026 at 2:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s approval rating sank to the lowest level of his current term — 34% — as Americans increasingly soured on his handling of the cost ‌of living and an unpopular war with Iran, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

James Comey Indicted Again

April 28, 2026 at 2:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Tuesday over a photo of seashells officials said threatened President Donald Trump, marking the administration’s second attempt to prosecute one of his largest political opponents,” CNN reports.

“Last May, Comey posted a photo on social media of shells on a beach writing out the numbers ’86 47,’ which critics said referred to taking out or killing Trump.”

Democrats May Sue Trump Over the Iran War

April 28, 2026 at 2:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats in Congress are exploring a lawsuit against President Donald Trump if he continues the war in Iran beyond Friday’s legal deadline without obtaining congressional authorization, setting up a potential constitutional clash over presidential war powers as Congress prepares for another vote this week,” Time reports.

Trump to Redesign Passports to Include His Photo

April 28, 2026 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The State Department is close to finalizing a radical redesign of the U.S. passport to include a picture of President Donald Trump, The Bulwark reports.

It comes as the Treasury Department prepares to produce coins featuring Trump’s image—both a controversial $1 coin in general circulation and an “as large as possible” commemorative gold coin—and as the National Park Service emblazons Trump’s face on its park passes.

Trump’s Power To Fire Employees Can Be Challenged

April 28, 2026 at 1:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “The Trump administration’s go-to tactic for firing career federal employees — delivering form letters that cite President Donald Trump’s ‘Article II’ constitutional powers — is backfiring in a way that could bolster the flood of lawsuits against the government.”

“Until now, the White House had effectively shut down the primary legal avenue ex-employees had to challenge their terminations by refusing to fully staff an obscure government panel that handles workplace disputes. But a New York judge on Tuesday issued a decision that said the dismissals open the door to bringing the fight to federal court. It was the second such ruling this month.”

Another GOP Lawmaker Retires

April 28, 2026 at 1:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Dan Webster (R-FL) will not seek re-election to Congress, Florida Politics reports.

Playbook: “The eight-term congressman, who has run multiple times for House speaker, had warned Republicans against the gerrymander that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled yesterday.”

Trump Tests Limits of His Most Faithful Supporters

April 28, 2026 at 1:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Over the past decade, many white evangelicals have overlooked Mr. Trump’s complicated relationship with religion in favor of achieving political goals ranging from restricting access to abortion to hanging copies of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.”

“They are less likely than other religious groups to see a problem with the Trump administration’s handling of files related to the investigation of the convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, the fallout from which has clouded Mr. Trump’s second term. And they have largely embraced the religious framing that administration officials have used to justify the war in Iran.”

“But Mr. Trump’s latest rhetoric, particularly on matters of faith as the war continues, has, according to polls and religious leaders, threatened to splinter a powerful coalition of religious voters who returned him to the White House, a group that includes white and Latino Catholics as well as Latino evangelicals, all of whom swung Mr. Trump’s way in 2024.”

What Trump’s Judicial Nominees Have in Common

April 28, 2026 at 1:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

HuffPost: “All 40 of his nominees to lifetime federal judgeships so far have given misleading or false responses to questions about the 2020 election in the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

“The House Rules Committee canceled its hearing this morning at the last minute. Currently, Republican leadership has no path forward to pass a rule for FISA, a budget resolution or the farm bill. Rules will convene again at 1 p.m. today to try to regroup and move forward.”

Todd Blanche Blackballed at D.C. Club

April 28, 2026 at 12:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Some members of one of Washington’s most exclusive clubs have a message for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche: We don’t want you.”

“Around February last year, Blanche started the rigorous process to join the Metropolitan Club, which is one of Washington’s oldest private clubs and claims D.C. royalty as members. But at least six members have written to the Met Club’s board of directors to object to Blanche’s joining, saying he’s too polarizing and has politicized the Justice Department.”
