Rubio Expected to Meet with Pope Leo

May 3, 2026 at 8:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to travel to Italy to meet with Pope Leo XIV this week, according to a senior Vatican official, marking the first high-ranking encounter between the pontiff and a top administration official since President Donald Trump issued withering criticism of the Chicago-born pope last month,” the Washington Post reports.

“The visit comes amid a deterioration in relations between the United States and the Vatican, as well as Italy, with observers viewing the trip as an attempt to patch up troubled ties. Rubio, a prominent Catholic in the administration, is expected to meet with Leo on Thursday, according to the Vatican official.”

Trump Says U.S. Will Guide Stranded Ships Through Strait

May 3, 2026 at 8:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said Sunday the U.S. would start guiding commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz where they have been trapped by the war between the U.S. and Iran, in an arm’s-length effort to unblock the vital supply route,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s announcement was essentially a challenge to Iran, and a bet that it would not want to take the risk of firing the first shots — or laying mines — in a challenge to the U.S. Navy. He said nothing about lifting the American blockade on all shipping in and out of Iranian ports.”

The Antiabortion Movement Is Turning on Trump

May 3, 2026 at 8:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The antiabortion lobby expected to be more triumphant by now: A conservative Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Republicans control both chambers of Congress, and the self-styled ‘most pro-life president in history’ again occupies the Oval Office,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“But abortions are up in the years after the overturning of Roe, and the antiabortion lobby has a new locus for blame.”

Young Men Are Souring on Donald Trump

May 3, 2026 at 3:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “In his three runs for office, Mr Trump has always won the male vote and always won overall when his opponent was a woman. A study by Dan Cassino of Fairleigh Dickinson University found that, after voting for Trump in 2024, men actually reported feeling more masculine.”

“Yet his macho magic appears to be fading, especially among young men. In 2024 49% of men aged 18-29 voted for him. Now only 28% approve of him, finds a Harvard/IOP poll. Virile vibes are all very well, but young men have practical concerns, too. They often want to find a job, buy a home, attract a partner and raise a family…”

“The trouble is, homes and families cost money. Mr Trump said he would ‘make America affordable again’ by ending inflation and even making prices fall. Yet his tariffs and war in Iran have had the opposite effect.”

Shapiro Boosted Republican to Retaliate Against Democrat

May 3, 2026 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) secretly helped a Republican state treasurer’s 2024 reelection bid after the official’s Democratic opponent had criticized Shapiro as a potential VP pick, a close Shapiro ally said last week,” Axios reports.

Flashback Quote of the Day

May 3, 2026 at 1:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I want to tell you what I really think of Donald Trump. This man is a pathological liar… He lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth… The man cannot tell the truth, but he combines it with being a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country has ever seen.”

— Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), 10 years ago today.

Trump Is Big Winner with PGA Tour’s Return to Doral

May 3, 2026 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “For a decade, the PGA Tour shunned Trump’s courses, pulling a long-running event from Doral as his first presidential run unnerved sponsors…”

“But in Trump’s second term, some institutions that once publicly opposed him have backed down. Even those that engaged in quieter resistance, such as the PGA Tour, have come to accommodate him. And now golf’s flagship tour, with the accompanying glitz and glamour, is back at his resort.”

Kamala Harris Buys Home in Malibu

May 3, 2026 at 1:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Kamala Harris’ new $8.15 million Malibu home sits on a hill overlooking bougainvillea-dusted streets that sweep down toward the surf — a secluded idyll in a neighborhood of defensive shrubbery and eccentric statuary, where surveillance cameras swivel and the quiet feels carefully curated,” Politico reports.

“It is, in other words, the perfect place to get away for a while. Which is exactly how many of her new neighbors see it, too.”

“Amid all the speculation about whether Harris will again run for president, her move is regarded here — in her new celebrity-laden enclave — not as a launching pad, but as a sign of retreat.”

New Surgeon General Nominee Has a MAHA problem

May 3, 2026 at 1:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Their disdain adds to the list of grievances MAHA members have with the Trump administration and could dampen their enthusiasm for Republican candidates in the midterms. The White House is counting on the alliance to help GOP candidates.”

Political Violence Drives Demand for Security

May 3, 2026 at 1:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Pennsylvania’s governor is trying to figure out who will pay to improve safety at his personal residence. Baltimore’s mayor is being questioned over a $160,000 SUV with enhanced security features. And Minnesota legislators are considering a new security unit for elected officials that would cost millions each year.”

“Even before the attempted attack at the White House correspondents’ dinner last weekend, a spate of political violence and a rising number of threats had rattled state and local officials asking what should be done to protect those in public office.”

Delayed Louisiana Primaries Stoke Confusion

May 3, 2026 at 1:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “On the first day of early voting, some glimpses of voter bewilderment came into focus, part of a dizzying scramble playing out days after a major Supreme Court ruling.”

Mallory McMorrow Downplays Deleted Tweets

May 3, 2026 at 1:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Sen. Mallory McMorrow (D) made the case for her “authenticity” while responding to criticism she’s facing after reports revealed she deleted old social media posts criticizing the rural Midwest and praising California, CNN reports.

Said McMorrow: “I started my career as a car designer, and then I worked in a very different career and wasn’t thinking about it. I tweeted normal things like a normal person, and people are desperate for authenticity, so that is what we need in November.”

Just 16 House Seats Are Toss Ups

May 3, 2026 at 11:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A shrinking number of seats will determine control of the US House after both Republicans and Democrats spent much of the past year redrawing congressional maps to erase swing districts,” Bloomberg reports.

“Even before Florida’s legislature approved a new Republican-leaning map last week, just 16 seats were listed as ‘tossups’ by the Cook Political Report, the nonpartisan newsletter that serves as an unofficial electoral scorekeeper. Another 16 districts are listed as leaning toward Democrats or Republicans, with the outcome all but predetermined for more than 400 seats.”

“This could make for the fewest competitive seats since political analyst Charlie Cook first published his race ratings in 1984.”

Exchange of the Day

May 3, 2026 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump took questions from reporters:

REPORTER: In your letter to Congress, you said the hostilities in Iran have concluded. How can you say that given the naval blockade?

TRUMP: Well, it’s a very friendly blockade.

What Six Upcoming House Primaries Will Reveal

May 3, 2026 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than a dozen states are set to hold US House primaries in the next five weeks,” CNN reports.

“Some will set up key general election matchups that could determine control of the US House in November. Others will reveal something about the dynamics that are shaping the two parties and what it means to be electable.”

“President Donald Trump’s political power will be put to a high-profile test in Kentucky, where he’s targeted Rep. Thomas Massie, and a crowded primary in Montana. And Democrats are facing off in crowded primaries in Pennsylvania, Nebraska and California, with opposing visions of the party’s future and who is most likely to flip Republican-held districts.”
