Rudy Giuliani Take to the Hospital

May 4, 2026 at 6:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in a Florida hospital in critical condition, the New York Times reports.

President Trump on Truth Social: “Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition. What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad! “

Quote of the Day

May 4, 2026 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m a Democrat, and I’m staying one.”

— Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), quoted by Politico, on whether he would consider switching parties.

Americans Really Dislike Both Political Parties

May 4, 2026 at 6:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress are unpopular, according to the latest Economist/YouGov poll, with far more Americans having unfavorable views of each party than have favorable views.”

“31% of Americans have a very or somewhat favorable view of Republicans in Congress, while 59% have an unfavorable view — a net favorability of -28. 34% have a favorable view of Democrats in Congress and 55% have an unfavorable view, a net favorability of -21.”

Gas Prices Keep Edging Higher

May 4, 2026 at 6:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gas prices hit an average of $4.45 a gallon over the weekend.

Playbook: “That’s a 30-cent rise in the past week, and up a whopping $1.28 from this time last year. The next big landmark — a national average price of $4.50 a gallon — could hit this week and would trigger another round of grim headlines. And voters know this is a price increase linked directly to Trump’s war.”

Six Months from the Midterms

May 4, 2026 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Six months from today, America will wake up to a new political reality. Nov. 4 — the morning after the midterms — is the moment Democrats expect the next phase of retaliation against Trump 2.0 … and the moment optimistic Republicans, at least, believe the president and his allies in Congress will be newly empowered to finish the job.”

“Right now, the mood among rank-and-file Republicans is desperate…”

“Today also marks six months on from the disastrous off-year elections that laid bare the scale of Republicans’ plight. Since then, the dominant storylines have been ICE chaos in Minnesota, a partial government shutdown, and the war in Iran. You’ll struggle to find a GOP strategist who would’ve picked that as a defensible position…”

“There’s still no sign of the president showing the message discipline that Republicans need from their most powerful megaphone. “

House GOP Dysfunction Becomes Issue for the Midterms

May 4, 2026 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans say the dysfunction in the House is becoming a liability for the broader GOP brand ahead of this year’s midterm elections, warning that if Congress can’t break through legislative gridlock the party’s candidates will pay a severe political price in November,” The Hill reports.

Trump Pushes for Aggressive Voter Roll Purges

May 4, 2026 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “For decades, it’s generally been assumed that any mass purges of voter rolls had to be completed at least 90 days out from an election.”

“But Republicans and the Trump administration are now testing the scope of the federal law that imposes that ban on “systematic” removal programs within three months of an election, as President Donald Trump pushes for more aggressive reviews of voter rolls for non-citizens and other ineligible voters.”

Democrats Add Eight to House Battlefield Program

May 4, 2026 at 6:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Democratic officials added eight candidates on Monday to a list of top contenders in congressional midterm battlegrounds, wading into a handful of contested primaries to make clear the party leadership’s preference in some of the country’s most critical districts.”

“The additions by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to its ‘Red to Blue’ program bring the number of candidates on the list to 20. The initiative primarily focuses on seats that party leaders believe they can flip. The designation typically offers candidates a significant fund-raising lift from donors.”

Another House Ethics Probe Comes to Light

May 4, 2026 at 6:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A former House staffer filed a complaint against Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA) in early 2023 alleging that Costa behaved inappropriately and made advances toward her in February 2020 – when she was an intern for a different lawmaker, NOTUS reports.

How the GOP Came to Embrace Psychedelic Drugs

May 4, 2026 at 5:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mindbending may be just the word to describe the Oval Office ceremony on April 18, when President Trump ordered federal agencies to speed up research into the potential therapeutic uses of illegal psychedelic compounds like LSD, peyote and MDMA.”

“Here was a law-and-order Republican and lifelong teetotaler championing the hallucinogenic substances that a previous Republican president, Richard Nixon, had condemned as ‘public enemy No. 1.’”

“In the decades since 1970, when Nixon consigned psychedelics to the most restrictive category of federal prohibition, his absolutist, just-say-no approach was embraced by waves of conservative politicians.”

A Big Week for Redistricting

May 4, 2026 at 5:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “There’s a redistricting frenzy breaking out across the South as GOP governors and legislators — under pressure from Trump — scramble to redraw minority-majority districts in order to replace Black Democrats with loyal Republicans. This comes after the Supreme Court’s Callais decision. The goal is to try to save Speaker Mike Johnson’s endangered House GOP majority, and maybe the final two years of Trump’s presidency.”

“Louisiana, Tennessee and Alabama are the battlegrounds for the spiral of legal and political moves and counter-moves. There’s also action in South Carolina, Virginia and Florida.”

“More than a dozen House seats are in play here. Some of the technical legal questions will likely be resolved by the end of today. But the political scramble is just revving up.”

Rubio Expected to Meet with Pope Leo

May 3, 2026 at 8:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to travel to Italy to meet with Pope Leo XIV this week, according to a senior Vatican official, marking the first high-ranking encounter between the pontiff and a top administration official since President Donald Trump issued withering criticism of the Chicago-born pope last month,” the Washington Post reports.

“The visit comes amid a deterioration in relations between the United States and the Vatican, as well as Italy, with observers viewing the trip as an attempt to patch up troubled ties. Rubio, a prominent Catholic in the administration, is expected to meet with Leo on Thursday, according to the Vatican official.”

Trump Says U.S. Will Guide Stranded Ships Through Strait

May 3, 2026 at 8:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said Sunday the U.S. would start guiding commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz where they have been trapped by the war between the U.S. and Iran, in an arm’s-length effort to unblock the vital supply route,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s announcement was essentially a challenge to Iran, and a bet that it would not want to take the risk of firing the first shots — or laying mines — in a challenge to the U.S. Navy. He said nothing about lifting the American blockade on all shipping in and out of Iranian ports.”

The Antiabortion Movement Is Turning on Trump

May 3, 2026 at 8:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The antiabortion lobby expected to be more triumphant by now: A conservative Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Republicans control both chambers of Congress, and the self-styled ‘most pro-life president in history’ again occupies the Oval Office,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“But abortions are up in the years after the overturning of Roe, and the antiabortion lobby has a new locus for blame.”

Young Men Are Souring on Donald Trump

May 3, 2026 at 3:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Economist: “In his three runs for office, Mr Trump has always won the male vote and always won overall when his opponent was a woman. A study by Dan Cassino of Fairleigh Dickinson University found that, after voting for Trump in 2024, men actually reported feeling more masculine.”

“Yet his macho magic appears to be fading, especially among young men. In 2024 49% of men aged 18-29 voted for him. Now only 28% approve of him, finds a Harvard/IOP poll. Virile vibes are all very well, but young men have practical concerns, too. They often want to find a job, buy a home, attract a partner and raise a family…”

“The trouble is, homes and families cost money. Mr Trump said he would ‘make America affordable again’ by ending inflation and even making prices fall. Yet his tariffs and war in Iran have had the opposite effect.”

Shapiro Boosted Republican to Retaliate Against Democrat

May 3, 2026 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) secretly helped a Republican state treasurer’s 2024 reelection bid after the official’s Democratic opponent had criticized Shapiro as a potential VP pick, a close Shapiro ally said last week,” Axios reports.

Flashback Quote of the Day

May 3, 2026 at 1:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I want to tell you what I really think of Donald Trump. This man is a pathological liar… He lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth… The man cannot tell the truth, but he combines it with being a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country has ever seen.”

— Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), 10 years ago today.

Trump Is Big Winner with PGA Tour’s Return to Doral

May 3, 2026 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “For a decade, the PGA Tour shunned Trump’s courses, pulling a long-running event from Doral as his first presidential run unnerved sponsors…”

“But in Trump’s second term, some institutions that once publicly opposed him have backed down. Even those that engaged in quieter resistance, such as the PGA Tour, have come to accommodate him. And now golf’s flagship tour, with the accompanying glitz and glamour, is back at his resort.”
