The Looting of America

May 19, 2026 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “So the Trump administration is creating a $1.776 billion slush fund — 1776, get it? — to pay off victims of ‘lawfare and weaponization.’ Just to be clear, if you’re a U.S. taxpayer, this action means that almost $1.8 billion of your money will be handed out to whomever a panel appointed by Donald Trump decides to reward. The beneficiaries are likely to include January 6 insurrectionists, as well as Trump, his family, and his allies.”

“Few things shock me these days, but this development — in which a Justice Department that works for Trump is paying a vast sum to ‘settle’ a lawsuit brought by Trump himself — is a new nadir in self-dealing, further revealing Trump’s utter contempt for the American people.”

Trump Says He’s ‘Concerned’ About Ebola

May 19, 2026 at 6:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said he was concerned about Ebola after an American tested positive for it, CNBC reports.

Said Trump: “I’m concerned about everything, but certainly I am.”

He added: “I think that it’s been confined right now to Africa, and but it’s something that has had a breakout.”

A Third of Republicans Seek New Direction for the Party

May 19, 2026 at 6:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s grip on the Republican Party remains indisputable, according to the latest New York Times/Siena poll, with a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents wanting to see the next presidential nominee follow his lead on most issues,” the New York Times reports.

“But there are signs that some in the G.O.P. coalition are looking to move beyond the Trump era. Thirty-seven percent want to see the party’s next nominee move in a different direction, including a majority of Republican-leaning independents. And divisions are emerging even among the president’s strongest supporters when it comes to questions about the economy and foreign policy, as the war with Iran has driven up gas prices.”

The Stories Missing From Your Feed

You already know the problem: the same story can look completely different depending on where you read it — and some barely show up at all because algorithms decide what you see.

My goal for Political Wire is to help you get outside those filters — to understand not just what happened, but how it’s being covered and who might be missing it. That’s why I use and recommend Ground News.

It’s an app and website that brings together global news from across the political spectrum, showing each source’s bias, factuality, and ownership.

What I find especially useful is the Blindspot Feed. It highlights stories getting heavy coverage on one side but little on the other — a quick way to see what your usual news diet may be missing.

Supreme Court Justices Hint at Strains

May 19, 2026 at 6:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As the justices have traveled the country this month for public appearances, a traditional part of the court’s schedule after finishing oral arguments for the term, they have seemed intensely aware of a public debate about their relationships with each other and the court’s own legitimacy.”

Trumpworld’s Presidential Gold Rush

May 19, 2026 at 6:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats erupted Monday over President Trump’s $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund for MAGA allies who claim political persecution, vowing to investigate what they called textbook corruption,” Axios reports.

“With each passing month, Trump is weaving the financial interests of his family, his allies and his political movement more tightly than ever into the fabric of the American presidency.”

The UK Is Not Rejoining the EU

May 19, 2026 at 6:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

EuroIntelligence: “The Brexit wars are back in the UK, though we should not hold our breath this time. The chances of the UK rejoining the EU in this parliament, which runs until 2029, are exactly zero. It is possible that the Labour Party may campaign in favour of a referendum in the following parliament, but, from today’s perspective, it does not appear likely.”

“The main reason is that Brexit has become a useful blame-game instrument for Labour politicians, but none of them have a plan for re-entry.”

Trump’s Approval Could Fall Further

May 19, 2026 at 6:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “While it’s too soon to say whether the war in Iran and high gas prices will ultimately break the floor in Mr. Trump’s support, the poll leaves no doubt that these issues could pull his approval ratings down even lower. Just 28 percent of voters approve of his handling of the cost of living, and only 31 percent approve of his handling of the war. Just 30 percent say he made the ‘right decision’ in choosing to attack Iran.”

Generational Change Stops at the Capitol Walls

May 19, 2026 at 5:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “Democratic voters around the country are clamoring for new party leadership. Older Democratic lawmakers are facing political and electoral pressure like never before.”

“But there’s little chance the House Democratic Caucus will impose term limits on their committee leaders next Congress, showing that the anti-octogenarian movement stops at the walls of the Capitol.”

“It also presents an uncomfortable reality for younger House Democrats despondent at the prospect of potentially waiting years or even decades to snag senior posts on panels. And it’s yet another example of how the desire for generational change among Democrats is running up against a caucus that’s resistant to reform.”

Trump’s Endorsement Can Backfire in Swing Districts

May 19, 2026 at 5:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For Republicans running in swing districts this fall, President Donald Trump’s endorsement might hurt more than it helps,” Politico reports.

“In fact, both Democrats and Republicans in the most closely contested races might be wary of being publicly backed by many of the biggest political figures or interest groups this fall, according to new results from The Politico Poll. That’s because getting their backing can, in some cases, generate backlash from voters far greater than any increase in support when compared with other groups.”

Treasury Lawyer Resigns Over ‘Anti-Weaponization Fund’

May 19, 2026 at 5:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The top lawyer at the Treasury Department stepped down on Monday in the wake of the creation of a $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization fund’ that could soon make payments to President Trump’s political allies,” the New York Times reports.

“Brian Morrissey, the Treasury’s general counsel, resigned from the position seven months after he was confirmed to it by the Senate and just hours after the Trump administration announced the fund on Monday.”

Trump Threatens Iran and Then Pulls Back

May 19, 2026 at 5:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said Monday that he had authorized a new wave of attacks against Iran this week but that he was holding off to make room for ‘serious negotiations,’ after he said three Gulf leaders requested more time to work out a nuclear deal,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump has repeatedly threatened to launch new strikes, only to pull back at the last minute from plunging the United States back into an unpopular, expensive war. On Monday, he confirmed plans to strike and canceled them at the same time.”

Trump Turns to Thomas Massie

May 19, 2026 at 4:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s grip on the Republican party will be tested again in Kentucky’s primary today where he’s trying to oust longtime nemesis Rep. Thomas Massie,” Politico reports.

“In what’s been deemed Trump’s monthlong ‘revenge tour,’ the president has successfully sunk the reelection campaigns of members of his own party who have refused his demands, including several Indiana state lawmakers and Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy.”

“Massie would be the ultimate trophy in Trump’s payback crusade. The House member has been a growing thorn in Trump’s side for years, opposing the Iran war, aid to Israel and pressing for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Trump endorsed Massie’s opponent and former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein as both sides poured tens of millions of dollars into what has been billed the most expensive House primary in history.”

“A Massie loss could essentially quash any internal GOP dissension as he moves into the lame-duck phase of his presidency. A win, however, could embolden Massie and other internal critics, further deepening intraparty fractures as Trump’s approval ratings slumps.”

Nancy Pelosi Endorses Connie Chan to Succeed Her

May 18, 2026 at 8:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to serve as speaker of the House, on Monday threw her significant clout behind a woman in the race to succeed her: Connie Chan, a member of the San Francisco board of supervisors.”

Trump Pressures John Thune to Fire Parliamentarian

May 18, 2026 at 8:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “President Trump pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune to fire the Senate parliamentarian after she ruled Republicans could not include funding for the president’s ballroom in a budget bill.”

Trump Privately Fumes Over Imperiled Ballroom Funds

May 18, 2026 at 7:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump aired his displeasure with the Senate rules referee during a Monday call with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, criticizing her decision to block a filibuster-proof vote on security money for his East Wing renovation and ballroom,” Semafor reports.

“The president is leaning on the Senate to deliver $1 billion in new Secret Service funding — including $200 million associated with the demolition of the East Wing for his ballroom and other facilities — as part of a larger immigration enforcement funding bill. Doing so would also put Congress’ imprimatur on the stalled ballroom project, which could help restart construction above ground.”

Mike Johnson Predicts GOP Will Net 7-8 House Seats

May 18, 2026 at 6:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson told top donors in D.C. that he believes Republicans will net seven to eight seats from mid-decade redistricting, Punchbowl News reports.

Trump Calls for Probe Into Maryland Voting

May 18, 2026 at 5:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump requested a federal investigation into unsubstantiated claims that Maryland sent hundreds of thousands of ‘illegal’ mail-in ballots to voters,” Bloomberg reports.

Four Virginia Democrats Drop Races

May 18, 2026 at 5:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

ABC News: “Overturning a new congressional map in Virginia that would have favored Democrats has had an outsized impact on the state’s U.S. House primaries, with at least four high-profile candidates so far suspending their campaigns.”

“With Virginia keeping its current congressional map, which currently has six Democrats and five Republicans, Democratic candidates face the prospect of either running in a GOP-leaning district or of mounting primary bids to incumbent Democrats.”
