“Republicans view Georgia as one of their top chances to pick up a seat in this year’s Senate elections, but the most successful Republican in the state fears the party is careening toward an old mistake,” the Washington Post reports.
“Brian Kemp, the state’s tonally moderate and highly popular governor, is fervently trying to prevent his party from nominating a Republican candidate for Senate who he argues is too polarizing to win an election in an increasingly purple Georgia.”
“The leading candidate in the primary in both fundraising and public polling, Rep. Mike Collins, has faced criticism for his provocative social media posts, including some that promoted the conspiracy theory that President Joe Biden ordered the 2024 assassination attempt against then-candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. Collins also faces an ethics investigation over allegations that his then-chief of staff misused taxpayer money to pay a friend. Collins’s office has denied the allegations.”
