June 19, 2026 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“News that the U.S. and Iran had reached an interim deal may have brought some initial relief to markets, but fresh uncertainty emerged on Friday after planned follow-up talks in Switzerland were called off, underscoring the challenges of turning the agreement into a lasting peace settlement,” CNBC reports.

“Switzerland’s foreign ministry said U.S.-Iran talks scheduled to take place at Bürgenstock on Friday would not proceed as planned.”

NewsNation: What happens now that the US-Iran peace deal has been called off?

Congress Grows Anxious over USMCA Renewal

June 19, 2026 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As another round of negotiations to review a North American free-trade deal wraps up in Washington this week, lawmakers are growing more vocal in defense of the deal, and anxious about its future,” the New York Times reports.

“President Trump has said he’s not sure whether he will renew the six-year-old United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. While many view the president’s threats as a negotiating tactic, they are still causing concern among members of Congress whose districts depend on the agreement.”

Donald Trump, Champion of Renewable Energy

June 19, 2026 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “Yes, $2.5 billion to destroy already-approved, cost-effective clean energy projects while Americans are suffering from soaring electricity prices thanks to data centers and high gasoline prices.”

“Yet here’s the irony: Donald Trump’s disastrous Iran war has delivered a huge boost for renewable energy around the world — except in the U.S.. Trump has so far done more to shift the global economy away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy than any other single individual in history.”

Juneteenth Holds On as DEI Goes Underground

June 19, 2026 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “The holiday’s staying power shows how Black history can be absorbed into calendars, payroll systems and public rituals even as the post-2020 commitments that gave it renewed force are renamed, narrowed or abandoned.”

“The holiday is enduring by becoming quieter, more internal and routine.”

“Juneteenth remains a federal holiday, and President Trump cannot cancel it unilaterally despite his attacks on it.”

Conservatives Are Dying at Higher Rates Than Liberals

June 19, 2026 at 6:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Your politics could be making you ill, and conservatives are dying at significantly higher rates than liberals, according to a recent study in Nature,” Fast Company reports.

“Over the past decade, a health gap has emerged in the United States. While extensive research has examined how factors like income and education shape health outcomes, political ideology has largely been overlooked—until now.”

Pingree and Charles Will Face Off for Maine Governor

June 19, 2026 at 6:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hannah Pingree, a former Maine House speaker who later worked on policy initiatives for Gov. Janet Mills and won her endorsement, won the state’s Democratic nomination for governor after a ranked-choice runoff, state officials said early Friday. She will face Bobby Charles, a conservative Republican and former State Department official,” the New York Times reports.

“The runoff, a feature of Maine’s ranked-choice voting system, was necessary because none of the candidates in either primary received more than 50 percent of the vote.”

Thousands of Lives Lost in the Iran War

June 19, 2026 at 6:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “More than 3,000 Iranians were reported to have been killed in the conflict. Israel says 26 Israelis have been killed. Thousands of people in both countries have been injured.”

“The U.S. military says 13 of its members have been killed.”

“Israel renewed attacks on Lebanon on March 18 as part of the wider war, and about 3,700 people have been killed there, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.”

Trump’s Iran Strategy Tests Limits of the ‘Madman Theory’

June 19, 2026 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NOTUS: “The U.S. and Iran are expected to begin talks this weekend in Switzerland toward a permanent end to the war. They have 59 days to agree on contentious issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, economic sanctions and a new regional arrangement governing the Strait of Hormuz.”

“It’s a particularly delicate period, but Trump remains deeply volatile. The negotiations will test the “madman theory” of foreign policy the president leans on: assuming adversaries will cave because they don’t know how far he will go. They will also test whether U.S. officials can reach mutually agreeable terms when their boss might shift the goalposts at any time — an especially significant task given how massive the global cost of resuming conflict with Iran has become.”

GOP Thinks They Can Save Their Majority at the Border

June 19, 2026 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “The House Republicans’ campaign arm is working to flip three border districts in November while defending at least two more. They believe they have recruited a strong lineup of challengers and can lean on illegal border crossings hitting record lows under President Donald Trump, even as his administration’s deportation efforts have coincided with a sharp drop in Latino support.”

“In a midterm cycle with fewer likely competitive districts due to redistricting, what happens in as many as six competitive border districts could help determine who controls the House for Trump’s final two years in office.”

Another Round of Political Churn in the UK

June 19, 2026 at 6:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Days before securing his decisive by-election victory, Andy Burnham named George Orwell’s The Road to Wigan Pier as the book that has most shaped his politics,” Bloomberg reports.

“Now, his own journey — from near Wigan in the north of England to Downing Street — has begun.”

“The Mayor of Greater Manchester, who’s long harbored ambitions for higher office, gained a parliamentary seat in a standalone contest. That allows him to mount a leadership challenge against Prime Minister Keir Starmer, paving the way for Britain’s fifth premier in less than four years.”

What’s Missing from the Epstein Files?

June 19, 2026 at 6:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When the Department of Justice released more than 3 million pages of documents under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, survivors, advocates and lawmakers quickly raised questions about an apparent discrepancy: the DOJ had said it collected more than 6 million pages of material during its investigation but was only releasing half that number,” CBS News reports.

Labour Mayor Wins Special Election

June 19, 2026 at 5:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester in northern England, won a seat in Parliament on Thursday, a pivotal step in his plans to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for leadership of the Labour Party and the country,” the New York Times reports.

Washington Post: “The victory returns Burnham to the House of Commons where he served 16 years and sets the stage for a leadership challenge in coming weeks that could make him the prime minister. Under the U.K.’s parliamentary system a new national election is not needed.”

John Thune Gets Blindsided Again

June 19, 2026 at 5:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “The South Dakota Republican had just about the worst luck over the past couple of months, getting blindsided repeatedly by a president who sometimes seems not to care that much about the fate of his congressional majorities.”

“From acceding to Trump’s demand for White House ballroom security funding — before reneging due to GOP opposition — to fast-tracking the president’s nominee for director of national intelligence only to have Trump pump the brakes, Thune has seen that even when he does what Trump wants, the favor is rarely, if ever, returned.”

“Thune has taken it in stride, flashing some anger here and there. But his relationship with Trump has clearly taken a hit.”

June 18, 2026 at 11:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President JD Vance on Thursday defended the preliminary deal to stop the war with Iran as a “win for the American people.” But he relied in part on a string of aspirational, vague and misleading claims about the agreement, the New York Times reports.

Trump Donor’s Firm Got No-Bid Contract for Reflecting Pool

June 18, 2026 at 10:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A business tied to a longtime supporter of President Trump was given a no-bid contract to install a water-purification system in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool earlier this spring,” the New York Times reports.

“Now that work is coming under scrutiny after algae blooms have come back and turned the iconic pool in Washington a vibrant shade of green rather than the American-flag blue Mr. Trump says he chose.”

ABC News: Some of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool liner appears to be falling apart.

June 18, 2026 at 9:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vice President JD Vance is no longer traveling to Switzerland tonight as previously planned for the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Iran, a White House spokesperson said, citing unresolved logistics surrounding the next phase of negotiations, CNN reports.

Trump Says There Are ‘No Limits’ to His Power

June 18, 2026 at 9:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump denied that the Iran war revealed the limits of his ability to exert power, Axios reports.

Asked what he’d learned from the war about the limits to his power, he said: “There are no limits.””

He added: “I haven’t learned that lesson yet. I know there are, but there are no limits.”
