Belarus Accused of Hijacking Aircraft

May 23, 2021 at 5:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A prominent opponent of Belarus’ authoritarian president was arrested Sunday after the airliner in which he was traveling was diverted to the country after a bomb threat, in what the opposition and Western officials denounced as a hijacking operation by the government,” the AP reports.

Said one passenger: “I saw this Belarusian guy with girlfriend sitting right behind us. He freaked out when the pilot said the plane is diverted to Minsk. He said there’s death penalty awaiting him there.”

Sick Staff at Wuhan Lab Fuels Debate On Virus Origin

May 23, 2021 at 3:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Three researchers from China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology became sick enough in November 2019 that they sought hospital care, according to a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report that could add weight to growing calls for a fuller probe of whether the Covid-19 virus may have escaped from the laboratory,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The disclosure of the number of researchers, the timing of their illnesses and their hospital visits come on the eve of a meeting of the World Health Organization’s decision-making body, which is expected to discuss the next phase of an investigation into Covid-19’s origins.”

Quote of the Day

May 23, 2021 at 12:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I worked for eight presidents, five of them were Republicans. I don’t think any of them would recognize the Republican party today. I think in terms of the values and the principles that the Republican party stood for under those five presidents are hard to find these days.”

— Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, quoted by The Hill.

Ex-GOP Senator Says Trump Responsible for Insurrection

May 23, 2021 at 12:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA), who also served as President Trump’s ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa, told CNN that he thinks the ex-president bears responsibility for the Capitol insurrection and that his presidency was “diminished” as a result of the deadly attack.

Said Brown: “Absolutely, I mean he bears responsibility. I think his presidency was diminished as a result of this, and I think he’s paying a price. He’s been impeached twice. He was impeached for those actions.”

Mike and Karen Pence Move Back to Indiana

May 23, 2021 at 11:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

USA Today: “The Pences, who had been renting a house in suburban Virginia after leaving office in January, purchased a home north of Indianapolis… They are moving in this weekend, providing the native Hoosier a chance to launch a potential bid for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination from his home state.”

Texas GOP Would Curtail Urban Voting Places

May 23, 2021 at 11:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Texas Tribune: “The number of Election Day polling places in largely Democratic parts of major Texas counties would fall dramatically under a Republican proposal to change how Texas polling sites are distributed… Voting options would be curtailed most in areas with higher shares of voters of color.”

Pennsylvania Republicans Ignore Biden

May 23, 2021 at 11:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philadelphia Inquirer: “When Pennsylvania Republicans celebrated the passage of two ballot questions this week reining in the emergency powers held by the governor’s office, they saw more than just a rebuke to Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf. They saw a path to winning the office themselves next year. … Republicans hoping to replace Wolf are making the lame-duck governor and his handling of the coronavirus a central issue in the very early days of the 2022 contest.”

“With President Joe Biden enjoying strong public approval ratings early in his tenure and Wolf’s slipping as his eight years in office near a close, Republicans are making the governor an even more prominent target — and largely ignoring Democrats’ big-spending ambitions in Washington.”

Ex-Boris Johnson Adviser Denounces Early COVID-19 Plan

May 23, 2021 at 11:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Reuters: “Britain’s early plan to combat COVID-19 was a ‘disaster’ and ‘awful decisions’ led to the government imposing lockdowns that could have been avoided, Prime Minister Boris Johnson former top adviser said.

“Dominic Cummings, who left Johnson’s staff late last year, made his comments in a series of tweets just days before he is due to give evidence to members of parliament about the government’s handling of the pandemic. Before his sudden departure, Cummings had been Johnson’s most influential adviser on Brexit and played an important role in his successful 2019 election campaign.”

Wave of Money Flows to Indian Reservations

May 23, 2021 at 11:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Billings Gazette: “This summer, Indian Country will receive the largest infusion of federal money in the history of the United States.”

Biden’s Priorities Stall on Capitol Hill

May 23, 2021 at 11:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The burst of legislating that characterized the first few months of the Biden administration — from the signing of $1.9 trillion in coronavirus relief into law to swift passage of several Democratic priorities in the House — has slowed dramatically. The White House’s hopes for meaningful policy achievements hinge on a handful of critical ongoing negotiations, centered mainly in the Senate, and each of those is now struggling to move forward.”

“For weeks, a trio of negotiators on policing have been tied up over how much immunity — if any — law enforcement officers accused of misconduct should enjoy from lawsuits. A bipartisan group of senators has also quietly discussed expanding background checks for gun purchases, a weeks-long back-and-forth that the lead Democrat involved said was ‘frustrating.’”

“Immigration continues to vex GOP and Democratic lawmakers, as Republicans remain wary about granting legalization to undocumented immigrants as long as migrants, including unaccompanied children, continue to arrive at the southern border in large numbers. And on voting, Senate Democrats, who hold the barest of majorities, have not even rounded up unanimous support within their ranks, much less the 10 GOP votes that would be needed to clear legislation through their chamber.”

GOP Lawmaker Denounces Marjorie Taylor Greene

May 23, 2021 at 11:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) denounced comments made by fellow Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who compared the mask policy on the House floor to the Holocaust, calling them “beyond reprehensible,” The Hill reports.

Said Meijer: “Any comparisons to the Holocaust, it’s beyond reprehensible. This is, I don’t even have words to describe how disappointing it is to see this hyperbolic speech that frankly amps up and plays into a lot of the antisemitism that we’ve been seeing in our society today.”

HuffPost: Liz Cheney calls Greene’s comments “evil lunacy.”

Biden Will ‘Change Course’ If Inaction Is Inevitable

May 23, 2021 at 11:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House senior adviser Cedric Richmond told CNN that President Joe Biden will “change course” on his massive infrastructure bill if inaction on the costly proposal seems inevitable.

Said Richmond: “He wants a deal. He wants it soon, but if there’s meaningful negotiations taking place in a bipartisan manner, he’s willing to let that play out. But again, he will not let inaction be the answer. And when he gets to the point where it looks like that is inevitable, you’ll see him change course.”

Biden Feels Pressure from the Left

May 23, 2021 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz: “Biden will have to make some difficult choices about the unfinished parts of his economic and domestic agenda. He will continue to feel pressure from the left on voting rights, immigration, racial injustice, guns and the filibuster. So far he has maneuvered through this with relative confidence, but he has been forced by circumstances to adapt to the changes within his party and govern accordingly.”

Wall Street Journal: “An increasingly vocal progressive wing is putting more pressure on Democratic leaders over hot-button issues including U.S. military aid to Israel, Capitol security funding and policing practices.”

GOP Struggles to Define New Governing Coalition

May 23, 2021 at 7:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Aggravation and drama have defined the Republican Party since Trump left office. In just the two weeks, Republican leaders have punished his enemies, continued to pursue a revisiting of the election results and, on Capitol Hill, opposed bipartisan efforts to create a commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection. A few members expressed concern for those who broke into the building where they work.”

“A new generation of Trumpist acolytes — like Missouri attorney Mark McCloskey, who became famous for drawing a gun on Black Lives Matters protesters — have announced their intention to run for high office with a set of Trump issues that motivate them. McCloskey has announced plans to run for the Senate.”

“The moves pose a threat to the party’s efforts to reclaim moderate, largely college-educated voters whom were turned off by Trump, while muddying the party’s efforts to shift the national focus to the less popular parts of Democratic policies. They also mark a continued repudiation of the orthodoxy that last restored Republicans to power and governed the party for two generations.”

Rand Paul Says He Won’t Get Vaccinated

May 23, 2021 at 7:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said that he will not be getting vaccinated against COVID-19 since he’s already had the disease, The Hill reports.

Said Paul: “Until they show me evidence that people who have already had the infection are dying in large numbers, or being hospitalized or getting very sick, I just made my own personal decision that I’m not getting vaccinated because I’ve already had the disease and I have natural immunity.”

Trump Flack Ordered To Pay $42,000 in Legal Fees

May 22, 2021 at 9:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A U.S. District Court judge in Florida has ordered Jason Miller, a spokesperson for former President Trump, to pay G/O Media 42,000 in legal expenses,” the Daily Beast reports.

“This comes after a federal appeals court rejected his second $100 million defamation suit against G/O, the parent company of Gizmodo, Jezebel, and other websites.”

CNN has terminated its contract with senior political commentator Rick Santorum after racist, inaccurate remarks he made about Native Americans, HuffPost reports.

Trump Slides Toward Online Irrelevance

May 22, 2021 at 4:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On the Internet, former president Donald Trump is sliding toward something he has fought his entire life: irrelevance,” the Washington Post reports.

“Online talk about him has plunged to a five-year low. He’s banned or ignored on pretty much every major social media venue. In the last week, Trump’s website — including his new blog, fundraising page and online storefront — attracted fewer estimated visitors than the pet-adoption service Petfinder and the recipe site Delish.”

“Social engagement around Trump — a measure of likes, reactions, comments or shares on content about him across Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Pinterest — has nosedived 95 percent since January, to its lowest level since 2016.”
