Trump Says Manafort Pardon Is Possible

November 28, 2018 at 2:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told the New York Post that he’s never discussed a pardon for Paul Manafort, but it’s “not off the table.”

Said Trump: “It was never discussed, but I wouldn’t take it off the table. Why would I take it off the table?”

He also charged that Manafort, Roger Stone and Jerome Corsi were all asked to lie by the special counsel: “You know this flipping stuff is terrible. You flip and you lie and you get – the prosecutors will tell you 99 percent of the time they can get people to flip. It’s rare that they can’t.”

November 28, 2018 at 2:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It’s unclear what those activities involved or what the failure to certify might mean. The board discussed the matter in closed session.”

Unofficial results show Mark Harris (R) defeated Dan McCready (D) by 905 votes.

November 28, 2018 at 2:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Martha McSally’s (R-AZ) campaign released an interesting memo which concludes that a key reason she lost the U.S. Senate  race was due to the “ideological fissures” in the state Republican party.

Trump Told Mueller He Didn’t Know About Two Key Events

November 28, 2018 at 2:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “told special counsel Robert Mueller in writing that Roger Stone did not tell him about WikiLeaks, nor was he told about the 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his son, campaign officials and a Russian lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton,” CNN reports.

“One source described the President’s answers without providing any direct quotes and said the President made clear he was answering to the best of his recollection.”

November 28, 2018 at 2:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Illinois state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D) told Rep. Peter Breen (R), who was arguing against a bill she supported, that she would like to infect his loved ones with legionella bacteria, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Said Kifowit: “I would like to make him a broth of Legionella and pump it into the water system of his loved ones, so that they can be infected, they can be mistreated, they can sit and suffer by getting aspirin instead of being properly treated and ultimately die.”

Later, Kifowit said her words were “misheard, misrepresented, misinterpreted and mischaracterized.”

November 28, 2018 at 2:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said he “would start voting against priority items for completing the Senate’s work if he is not properly briefed by the CIA about the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi,” Roll Call reports.

Said Graham: “I’m talking about any key vote. Anything that you need me for to get out of town, I ain’t doing it until we hear from the CIA.”

Trump In No Hurry to Name Attorney General

November 28, 2018 at 2:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “feels no urgency to nominate a new attorney general and is content with Matthew Whitaker in place as acting head of the Department,” Bloomberg reports.

“He isn’t concerned by demands to move quickly to nominate a successor to fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions from key Republican senators including Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and Lindsey Graham, who is set to take over the panel in January… Trump has had conversations with many advisers about potential nominees, but no clear frontrunner has emerged… He’s been satisfied with Whitaker’s performance and that is one reason for his unhurried pace.”

November 28, 2018 at 1:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was elected Democratic Caucus chairman Wednesday, defeating Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) for the No. 5 leadership post in a 123-113 vote, Politico reports.

Jeffries, 48, has been in Congress for only six years but is already often mentioned by younger members as a future party leader.

All That for Just One Senate Seat

November 28, 2018 at 12:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nathan Gonzalez: “After two years of fighting, spending, and campaigning, and one party being handed a very favorable map, the U.S. Senate will be one seat different at the beginning of the 116th Congress than it was at the beginning of the 115th Congress. Republicans gained two Senate seats in the November elections, but lost the Alabama race in the Dec. 2017 special election. So the net change is minimal. The GOP majority shifted from 52-48 in Jan. 2017 to 53-47 in Jan. 2019.”

Bullock Not Interested In Senate Race

November 28, 2018 at 12:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Although Sen. Jon Tester’s (D-MT) reelection this year suggests Democrats could compete against Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) in 2020, Gov. Steve Bullock (D) — who is considering a presidential bid — doesn’t seem interested in the Senate race, Politico reports.

Said Bullock: “I’ve said earlier that really doesn’t interest me. But — well, no. I won’t even say ‘but.'”

Trump and Corsi Have a Joint Defense Agreement

November 28, 2018 at 11:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump, who built his political rise on promoting far-right birther claims against President Obama, does in fact have a joint defense agreement with leading birther conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, the Daily Beast reports.

Trump Cabinet Member Cut Deal for Serial Sex Abuser

November 28, 2018 at 11:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, then a federal prosecutor, crafted a plea deal in 2007 for Jeffrey Epstein that was meant to conceal the sexual abuse of as many as 80 underage girls, the Miami Herald reports.

“Not only would Epstein serve just 13 months in the county jail, but the deal — called a non-prosecution agreement — essentially shut down an ongoing FBI probe into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part in Epstein’s sex crimes.”

“The pact required Epstein to plead guilty to two prostitution charges in state court. Epstein and four of his accomplices named in the agreement received immunity from all federal criminal charges. But even more unusual, the deal included wording that granted immunity to ‘any potential co-conspirators’’ who were also involved in Epstein’s crimes.”

“As part of the arrangement, Acosta agreed, despite a federal law to the contrary, that the deal would be kept from the victims.”

House Democrats Left with $18 Million In Debt

November 28, 2018 at 11:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is $18 million in debt from this year’s midterms, NBC News reports.

“It’s common for campaigns and party committees to finish election cycles in the hole as they throw everything they have — and then some — at an election, but the $18 million will have to be made up through fundraising before the new chairman can start building a warchest for the next election cycle.”

Senate Delays Vote on Trump’s Nominee to Lead ICE

November 28, 2018 at 11:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Ronald Vitiello, a veteran law enforcement official whom the president tapped to run ICE, faced criticism at his Senate confirmation hearing earlier this month after he refused to rule out the possibility that the Trump administration would resort again to separating migrant parents and children at the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The Senate Math for 2020

November 28, 2018 at 10:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “With Hyde-Smith’s victory in Mississippi last night, the GOP will hold a 53-47 Senate majority next year (up from the 52-48 advantage they held to begin the 2018 cycle).”

“So here’s the Senate math you need to memorize for 2020: If Democrats win the White House, they will need a net of three pickups to control the chamber (since the vice president can break 50-50 ties in the Senate). But if they lose the White House, they will need to net four seats for control.”

“The early Senate battlegrounds for 2020: Alabama (D), Arizona (R), Colorado (R), Georgia (R), Iowa (R), Maine (R), Michigan (D) and North Carolina (R).”

Trump Slams Mueller for Third Straight Day

November 28, 2018 at 10:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump compared the prosecutions of Robert Mueller to those in the McCarthy era on Wednesday, continuing his relentless attacks on the special counsel investigating possible coordination between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign,” the Washington Post reports.

In a morning tweet, Trump also claimed that “major players” under investigation have “intimated” that Mueller’s team “is viciously telling witnesses to lie about facts & they will get relief.”

“The tweet marked the third straight day in which Trump has taken to Twitter in an attempt to discredit Mueller, who is also examining whether the president has tried to obstruct the investigation.”

Manafort’s Cooperation with Trump Could Be Obstruction

November 28, 2018 at 9:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Aaron Blake: “Once you agree to cooperate with the government, your interests no longer align (and often clash) with other subjects of the investigation, and such ‘joint defense agreements’ are usually instantly voided. That’s what happened when Michael Flynn flipped last year and with Michael Cohen this year. But that’s not the same as saying anyone involved will be punished — especially if they never misrepresented what they were doing.”

“There is another possible legal consequence, though, and it involves the broader obstruction of justice investigation. Basically, Mueller’s team could decide that this arrangement has amounted to witness tampering or obstruction, or that it adds to a mountain of evidence on that latter count.”
