Biden Signals Effort to Cut Drug Prices

September 10, 2021 at 12:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Biden administration on Thursday endorsed an aggressive proposal to limit prices for prescription drugs, calling for the government to negotiate with drug makers on prices and applying those prices not just to Medicare but to all drug purchasers in the country,” the New York Times reports.

“The administration cannot make such large changes on its own; it amounts to a signal to congressional Democrats. Democratic leaders in Congress have suggested that they hope to regulate prices in some way as part of the $3.5 trillion legislative package now being considered.”

September 10, 2021 at 12:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Tennessee student who was mocked by adults for sharing a story of his grandmother dying of Covid-19 said he was “shaken” when adults interrupted him with laughter as he tried to argue in favor of a mask mandate in his school, WSMV reports.

Said Grady Knox: “It was complete insanity, from my perspective. If they laugh at me about, like, a personal story about my grandmother, that’s just disrespectful… I was like shaken a little bit.”

However, Knox got the last laugh when the school board approved the mask mandate.

September 10, 2021 at 12:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), who was once a close adviser to former President Trump, told Republicans gathered at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Thursday evening that the party must “face the realities of the 2020 election,” discredit the “extremists in our midst” and “renounce the conspiracy theories,” CBS News reports.

Said Christie: “We need to quit wasting our time, our energy, and our credibility on claims that won’t ever convince anyone of anything.”

Judge Blocks Florida’s ‘Anti-Riot’ Law

September 10, 2021 at 11:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge ruled that Florida’s new “anti-riot” law championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) as a way to quell violent protests is unconstitutional and cannot be enforced, the AP reports.

The 90-page decision found the recently-enacted law “vague and overbroad” and amounted to an assault on First Amendment rights of free speech and assembly as well as the Constitution’s due process protections.

For a guy who graduated from Harvard Law School, DeSantis sure has a knack for losing court cases.

Flashback Quote of the Day

September 10, 2021 at 11:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Real liberty for all could not exist under the operation of a principle which recognizes the right of each individual person to use his own, whether in respect of his person or his property, regardless of the injury that may be done to others.”

— Justice John Marshall Harlan, in Jacobson v. Massachusetts, in which the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that vaccine mandates were constitutional.

J.D. Vance Calls for Mass Civil Disobedience

September 10, 2021 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ohio U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance (R) called for mass civil disobedience in response to President Biden’s vaccine mandate.

Said Vance: “Do not comply with the mandates. Do not pay the government fines. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied and controlled. Only mass civil disobedience will save us from Joe Biden’s naked authoritarianism.”

He also tweeted: “Remember as our geriatric tyrant goes off on his fellow citizens that there are thousands of untested, unvaxxed aliens walking across our southern border each day.”

It will be interesting to see how these calls for civil disobedience impact the rallies planned at the Capitol on September 18.

GOP Governor Pledges to Fight Biden to the ‘Gates of Hell’

September 10, 2021 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) tweeted: “The American Dream has turned into a nightmare under President Biden and the radical Democrats. They have declared war against capitalism, thumbed their noses at the Constitution, and empowered our enemies abroad.”

He added: “Rest assured, we will fight them to the gates of hell to protect the liberty and livelihood of every South Carolinian.”

September 10, 2021 at 10:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Despite the threat of lawsuits from several Republican governors, it’s worth noting that Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) is praising President Biden’s new vaccination policies.

Said Scott: “I appreciate the President’s continued prioritization of vaccination and the country’s recovery as we move forward. As Vermont’s experience shows, vaccines work and save lives. They are the best and fastest way to move past this pandemic.”

China Increasingly Rejects English, and the World

September 10, 2021 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “It’s hard to exaggerate the role English has played in changing China’s social, cultural, economic and political landscape. English is almost synonymous with China’s reform and opening-up policies, which transformed an impoverished and hermetic nation into the world’s second-biggest economy.”

“That’s why it came as a shock to many when the education authorities in Shanghai, the most cosmopolitan city in the country, last month forbade local elementary schools to hold final exams on the English language.”

“Broadly, the Chinese authorities are easing the workloads of schoolchildren, amid an effort to ease the burdens on families and parents. Still, many Chinese people with an interest in English can’t help but see Shanghai’s decision as pushback against the language and against Western influence in general — and another step away from openness to the world.”

Washington Post: In China, the dream of an American education loses some of its gleam.
