Michigan Candidate Drops Out After Wife Joins Race

January 18, 2022 at 7:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stan Grot (R) was in the race for an open Michigan House seat — until the Republican suddenly wasn’t. In the meantime, his wife, Sylvia Grot (R), joined the contest,” the Detroit News reports.

“The situation in Macomb County’s 36th state House District, which will have a special primary election on March 1, appears to be an example of political strategy at play.”

“Stan Grot, a former secretary of state candidate who’s well-known within the Michigan GOP, filed to run for the seat in late December, which could have scared other potential contenders out of the race. Then Sylvia Grot filed her campaign paperwork before the Jan. 7 deadline. And Stan Grot withdrew this past Monday after the filing deadline.”

Trump Increasingly Upbeat About 2024

January 18, 2022 at 7:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A year out of office, Donald Trump “feels increasingly emboldened to remain in politics after watching top Republicans bend to his will despite his role in the January 6 insurrection and because of the myriad challenges President Joe Biden has faced during his first term so far,” CNN reports.

One current Trump adviser said the former president was “still pretty dejected up until a few months ago, when his whole demeanor started changing the worse things became for Biden.” Only then, the adviser said, did Trump begin “seriously thinking about 2024 and what he needs to do this year so that he’s in a solid position for another campaign.”

“A review of Senate candidate Herschel Walker’s (R) Instagram account shows he follows several accounts with links to racy material,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“One of the accounts has a name not suitable for a family newsletter. Several others also have accounts on OnlyFans, a social media platform popular with porn stars.”

House GOP Hits Biden on Pandemic

January 18, 2022 at 6:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are edging toward harder hits at President Joe Biden while he struggles to contain Covid’s Omicron variant. Just don’t expect it to become a centerpiece of their midterm-election messaging,” Politico reports.

“That’s in part because the GOP has to walk a fine line on the pandemic — thanks to Donald Trump.”

One problem: “Members say it wouldn’t resonate well with their base, compared with issues like the economy, education and national security. Republicans also see it as a tough point to underscore given their broad dismissal of Covid precautions after the nation’s first round of vaccinations, as well as their growing rebukes of mask and vaccine mandates.”

Rudy Giuliani Among Trump Allies Subpoenaed

January 18, 2022 at 5:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House committee investigating the Capitol insurrection issued a new batch of subpoenas Tuesday to some of Donald Trump’s closet advisers, including Rudy Giuliani, as the committee inches closer to the former president,” the AP reports.

“The committee is continuing to widen its scope into Trump’s orbit, this time demanding information and testimony from Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell and Boris Epshteyn.”

January 18, 2022 at 5:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) has raised $21.6 million for her reelection campaign — “a record-smashing sum that positions her as the prohibitive favorite to win a full term as governor this fall,” the New York Times reports.

‘Sense of Pessimism’ Sets In About Russia’s Intentions

January 18, 2022 at 5:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Biden administration is weighing new options, including providing more arms to Ukraine to resist a Russian occupation, to try to raise the costs for Russian President Vladimir Putin should he decide to invade the country,” CNN reports.

“The discussions, described by multiple sources familiar with them, reflect a sense of pessimism in the administration following last week’s diplomatic talks with Russian officials that yielded no breakthroughs and as Russia has continued to raise its force levels in the last few days.”

Axios: “The U.S. believes that Russia may use joint military exercises inside Belarus as cover for an invasion of Ukraine from the north.”

Schumer Will Propose Reinstating ‘Talking Filibuster’

January 18, 2022 at 4:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will propose that the Senate reinstate the “talking filibuster,” where senators must stand and continue debate in order to block bills, PBS Newshour reports.

Although Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has been open to the idea of a talking filibuster in the past, it’s unlikely Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) will support the change.

Conor Lamb Picks Up Big Endorsement

January 18, 2022 at 3:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) endorsed Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) for U.S. Senate, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Said Kenney: “I wanna win. I don’t wanna be a mercenary about it — all the things I like about him are true — but as much as I respect everybody else in the Dem field, I believe he’s the person that can win.”

McConnell Threatens Retaliation Over Filibuster

January 18, 2022 at 3:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) warned that Democrats will pay a political price if they move to eliminate the filibuster — even if the effort fails, ABC News reports.

Said McConnell: “But too many of our colleagues across the aisle still want to respond to a 50-50 Senate with a rule-breaking power grab. Voting to break this institution will not be a free vote or a harmless action, even if their effort fails. An unprincipled attempt at grabbing power is not harmless just because it fails. Voting to break the Senate is not cost-free just because a bipartisan majority of your colleagues have the wisdom to stop you.”

— White House press secretary Jen Psaki, at her press briefing.

January 18, 2022 at 2:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Texas Secretary of State’s office is having more trouble than usual getting enough voter registration cards to groups who help Texans register to vote,” KUT reports.

Said a spokesman: “We are limited in what we can supply this year, because of the paper shortage and the cost constraints due to the price of paper and the supply of paper.”
