The Next Insurrection is Coming

January 6, 2022 at 7:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “The fact Republicans are moving ahead with a plan to steal the election in 2024 without fear of consequence is frightening and depressing. The political winds heading into the midterms are at their backs. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema remain more interested in protecting their centrist credentials than American democracy. Too much of the political media has normalized election theft as a legitimate political strategy in a fruitless attempt to avoid accusations of bias.”

“The time, place, and plan for perhaps the greatest crime in American history have been identified. We have three years to stop it. Yet, our political leaders are either unwilling or unable to intervene.”

Quote of the Day

January 6, 2022 at 7:33 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Have you ever had your house broken into or been a victim of a burglary, and when you walked back into the house it felt differently, it felt violated? I felt that way for the longest time — and I still do.”

— Sen. Dick Durbin, quoted by the New York Times, remembering the Capitol riots.

January 6 Is About Donald Trump

January 6, 2022 at 7:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “For those who always despised him, feel betrayed by him, or fear his return to power, today is about remembering — never forgetting — his lowest point as president: the day he incited a mob to attack Congress while it affirmed Joe Biden’s clear victory, the final desperate move in a plot to overthrow an American presidential election.”

“For those who love him, merely tolerate him, or crave his return to the White House, today is a media stunt: a contrived anniversary of an insignificant event boosted by Democrats and the press to punish Republicans and cynically advance Biden’s legislative priorities.”

“Americans often have a shared understanding about big traumatic national events. That is not the case with Jan. 6, which is why the cliché about our politics feeling like a civil war has more and more resonance.”

Biden Will Call Trump a Threat to Democracy

January 6, 2022 at 7:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Joe Biden will accuse his predecessor Donald Trump of posing a continuing threat to democracy on Thursday, the anniversary of the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters who tried to overturn his election defeat,” Reuters reports.

‘I Fear for Our Democracy’

January 6, 2022 at 6:54 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jimmy Carter: “Our great nation now teeters on the brink of a widening abyss. Without immediate action, we are at genuine risk of civil conflict and losing our precious democracy. Americans must set aside differences and work together before it is too late.”

Republicans Are Responsible for January 6

January 6, 2022 at 6:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Karl Rove: “If Democrats had done what some Trump supporters did on that violent Jan. 6, Republicans would have criticized them mercilessly and been right to do so. Republicans would have torched any high official who encouraged violence or stood mute while it was waged and been right to do so. Republicans would have demanded an investigation to find who was responsible for the violence and been right to do so.”

“To move beyond Jan. 6, 2021, we must put country ahead of party. For Democrats, that means resisting their leadership’s petty habit of aggravating partisan fault lines by indiscriminately condemning all who came to Washington that day.”

“We Republicans have a heavier burden. I’ve been a Republican my entire life, and believe in what the Republican Party, at its best, has represented for decades. There can be no soft-pedaling what happened and no absolution for those who planned, encouraged and aided the attempt to overthrow our democracy. Love of country demands nothing less. That’s true patriotism.”

Why Republicans Keep Falling for Trump’s Lies

January 6, 2022 at 6:51 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rebecca Solnit: “Mainstream figures in the center and the left are not pushing radically counterfactual stuff akin to the conservative lies about Covid-19, let alone trying to instigate or whitewash the kind of violence we saw on Jan. 6. Democrats operate on the basis of reasonably factual premises and usually accept the authority of science, law and history, while Republicans uninhibitedly push whatever’s most convenient for their goals and incendiary for their base.”

Axios: “Conspiracy theories about the U.S. Capitol insurrection continue to flood private messaging groups, social networks and even major news outlets one year later.”

Trump’s Hold on GOP Is Unrivaled

January 6, 2022 at 6:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “As the nation prepares Thursday to mark the anniversary of the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Trump has pushed a majority of his party into a full embrace of his false election fraud charges, while simultaneously leading the ongoing efforts to whitewash the violence carried out that day by a pro-Trump mob.”

New York Times: “Today, the Republican Party is very much still Mr. Trump’s, transforming his lies about a stolen 2020 election into an article of faith, and even a litmus test that he is seeking to impose on the 2022 primaries with the candidates he backs. He is the party’s most coveted endorser, its top fund-raiser and the polling front-runner for the 2024 presidential nomination.”

Capitol Riots Are Just Another Wedge In Divided Nation

January 6, 2022 at 6:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Today, it has become heresy among conservatives to question Mr. Trump’s legacy. The cabinet secretaries and White House aides who resigned in protest of his role in the violence now largely keep to themselves. Many corporations that vowed to halt donations to Republican lawmakers who voted to overturn the election have quietly reopened the contribution spigot. The congressional Republicans who angrily denounced the president after their headquarters was invaded have gone silent or even made the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago, all but pretending it never happened…”

“While nearly three-quarters of all Americans view the storming of the Capitol as an assault on democracy, about half of Republicans say the rioters were actually the ones ‘protecting democracy’ and nearly as many think the attack was not even that violent. While most Americans believe Mr. Biden was elected legitimately, seven in 10 Republicans think otherwise.”

Garland Has ‘No Higher Priority’ Than Capitol Rioters

January 5, 2022 at 9:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Attorney General Merrick Garland gave an update on the Justice Department’s investigation into the Capitol riot during a press conference Wednesday, emphasizing that the department has “no higher priority” than holding those accountable responsible, Axios reports.

Mike Pence’s Team Helping Select Committee

January 5, 2022 at 9:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“People in and around former Vice President Mike Pence’s office have been particularly cooperative as the Jan. 6 select committee focuses on what former President Trump was doing during the more than three hours the Capitol was under attack,” Axios reports.

“Both Pence’s former chief of staff Marc Short, and former press secretary Alyssa Farah, who later served as communications director to Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, are among those cooperating with the committee.”

Americans Fear a Repeat of January 6

January 5, 2022 at 6:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A majority of Americans expect a repeat in the next few years of something like the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol — and just half say they now have faith in American democracy,” according to a new Axios-Momentive poll.

GOP Lawmakers Still Won’t Say If Biden Was Elected

January 5, 2022 at 5:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nearly all of the 147 Republicans who voted to reject the 2020 presidential election results wouldn’t tell the HuffPost if they regret that vote.

Most Corporations Kept Pledges Made After January 6

January 5, 2022 at 4:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol, dozens of major corporations publicly pledged to pause their financial contributions to 147 Republican lawmakers who had voted to overturn the 2020 presidential election,” CBS News reports.

“A year later, most — but not all — of those companies have kept their word, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings.”

Did the January 6 Coup Fail?

January 5, 2022 at 3:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mona Charen: “The most threatening aspect of January 6th was not the ferocious attack on the Capitol but the response of Republican officeholders thereafter. Even after the unleashing of medieval mob violence; even after the erection of a gallows; even after members had been forced to run for their lives; even after the deaths and injuries; even after all of that and more, 147 Republican members of Congress voted not to certify Joe Biden as the winner of the presidency.”

“The transformation of the GOP from a political party into an authoritarian personality cult became official that day. McCarthy’s bootlicking visit to Mar-a-Lago in late January 2021 merely provided the visual.”

Omicron School Disruptions Stress Already-Frayed Parents

January 5, 2022 at 2:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “The Covid surge hitting just as kids are expected back in classrooms is making life unpredictable for parents yet again. Parents find themselves abruptly thrown back into a pandemic stage they thought they’d escaped: worrying about school cancellations, managing remote learning and calculating quarantine periods. Especially in places where case levels are acute, parents wonder how they will provide care and instruction for their children if they are sent home; some express uncertainty about the safety of going to school.”

“The fresh anxiety is straining already burned-out parents.”

Vox: America doesn’t have enough teachers to keep school’s open.

Biden Will Address Trump’s Role In Capitol Riot

January 5, 2022 at 1:51 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Biden will speak about the responsibility that he believes former President Donald Trump had in the Capitol attack on Thursday, The Hill reports.

Said White House press secretary Jen Psaki: “I would expect that President Biden will lay out the significance of what happened at the Capitol and the singular responsibility President Trump has for the chaos and carnage that we saw.”

January 5, 2022 at 1:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Private equity investor Tom Barrack will go on trial with a business associate in September on charges of illegally lobbying former President Donald Trump, his close friend, on behalf of the United Arab Emirates, CNBC reports.
