Biden Keeps His Hands to Himself

May 6, 2019 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Biden joined the race on the heels of a rough period in which six women publicly complained that Biden’s past touching made them uncomfortable. From his slow response to the controversy and the lack of apology, it wasn’t quite clear if the 76-year-old former vice president could adjust to the realities of campaigning in the #MeToo era — or if the criticism of the overly familiar physical contact even registered.”

“But after nearly a week on the campaign trail, including nearly a half-dozen events in Pittsburgh, Iowa and South Carolina, it appears Biden got the message. Gone are the episodes of canoodling with voters, replaced by a less tactile brand of retail politicking marked by selfies and more physical reserve than Biden is accustomed to.”

U.S. Deploys Forces to Mideast to Deter Iran

May 5, 2019 at 10:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. is deploying a carrier strike group and a number of bombers to the Middle East to serve as a deterrent to Iran based on new intelligence that suggests allied interests and American forces could be imperiled,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

China Considers Cancelling Trade Talks

May 5, 2019 at 8:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a surprise twist that has put a China-U.S. trade accord in doubt, Beijing is considering pulling out of talks scheduled to begin this week after President Trump threatened to drastically ramp up U.S. tariffs,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Chinese officials have said Beijing wouldn’t bend to pressure tactics. By potentially scotching the trip, Beijing would be following up on its pledge to avoid negotiating under threat.”

Trump Says His First Two Years Were ‘Stollen’

May 5, 2019 at 7:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump on Sunday “floated the idea of extending his constitutionally limited time in office, complaining online that two years of his first White House term were ‘stollen’ as a result of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation,” Politico reports.

He retweeted a message from Jerry Falwell Jr., who said: “I now support reparations — Trump should have 2 yrs added to his 1st term as pay back for time stolen by this corrupt failed coup.”

Trump added: “Despite the tremendous success that I have had as President, including perhaps the greatest economy and most successful first two years of any President in history, they have stollen two years of my (our) Presidency (Collusion Delusion) that we will never be able to get back.”

Inside a Trump Adviser’s Fundraising Mirage

May 5, 2019 at 5:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A political organization run by David Bossie, President Trump’s former deputy campaign manager, has raised millions of dollars by saying it’s supporting Trump-aligned conservative candidates — but has spent only a tiny fraction of that money supporting candidates,” Axios reports.

“Instead, federal records suggest the Presidential Coalition has spent nearly all its money — raised mostly from small-dollar donations — on more fundraising, as well as administrative costs, which include Bossie’s salary, according to a new report produced by the Campaign Legal Center.”

More from Axios: “About two-thirds of the contributions… came from donors giving less than $200 in a single year. And of the donors identified in its tax forms, most said they were retired.”

Trump Says Mueller Shouldn’t Testify

May 5, 2019 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that special counsel Robert Mueller “should not testify on the findings of his probe into Russian election interference, suggesting it was an attempt by Democrats to renew scrutiny on the White House after the release of Mueller’s long-awaited report,” The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “After spending more than $35,000,000 over a two year period, interviewing 500 people, using 18 Trump Hating Angry Democrats & 49 FBI Agents – all culminating in a more than 400 page Report showing NO COLLUSION – why would the Democrats in Congress now need Robert Mueller to testify.”

He added: “Are they looking for a redo because they hated seeing the strong NO COLLUSION conclusion? There was no crime, except on the other side (incredibly not covered in the Report), and NO OBSTRUCTION. Bob Mueller should not testify. No redos for the Dems!”

Jonathan Chait: “It is comically obvious that Trump relied on William Barr’s summary to shape a media narrative about the Mueller report that is not reflected in its actual substance. Trump fears a ‘redo,’ i.e., Mueller having the chance to summarize his own work, rather than having his loyal attorney general do it for him.”

North Korea Launched a Missile

May 5, 2019 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new satellite image obtained by CNN shows the smoke trail of a Friday rocket launch by North Korea that is likely a short-range missile.

“The missile test, North Korea’s first since 2017, serves as a clear warning of leader Kim Jong Un’s frustration at the state of talks with the US, which have been deadlocked since President Trump walked out of their Vietnam summit early in February. The launch follows a warm meeting between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin less than two weeks ago and likely signals more tests to come.”

Trump Will Increase Tariffs on China on Friday

May 5, 2019 at 12:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In a pair of tweets, President Trump said he will hike tariffs on $200 billion worth of imports to 25 percent from 10 percent, the Washington Post reports.

“Trump had twice before postponed the scheduled increase to allow negotiators to seek a comprehensive deal. His threat increases pressure on a deal that Trump said has been going ‘too slowly.'”

Jonathan Swan: “A source familiar with the situation told me that the Chinese had been backing off of agreements the U.S. negotiating team believed they had already made. Trump’s view, the source said, is that he’s negotiating from a position of clear economic strength, especially with the latest strong U.S. jobs numbers.”

Is ‘Likability’ Biased Towards Men?

May 5, 2019 at 12:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Likability: It is nebulous, arbitrary and meaningless, yet inescapable — and female politicians seem to be particularly burdened with it even when they win and especially when they run for president.”

“The idea that we should like our politicians predates women’s suffrage, let alone women in politics. Pushed by Madison Avenue and preached by self-help gurus, likability is a standard that history shows us was created and sold by men. The bad news is that means it’s a tricky fit for women. The good news is that what was invented once can be reinvented.”

Campaigns Will Have to Pay for DNC Voter File

May 5, 2019 at 12:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In addition to the $175,000 price tag on the voter file, according to a copy of the agreement obtained by BuzzFeed News, candidates who purchase the voter file must also agree to appear at one or more DNC fundraising events every three months during the duration of their bid for the nomination. At each fundraising event appearance — dubbed ‘signature event(s)’ in the term sheet — candidates will also be asked to record a short video in support of the DNC.”

“Campaigns must also sign at least one DNC fundraising email every three months, with donations split evenly between the campaign and the DNC.”

Trump Initiated Call with Putin

May 5, 2019 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “initiated a lengthy call with his Russian counterpart on Friday, in which Vladimir Putin urged sanctions relief for North Korea and warned against interference in Venezuela,” Bloomberg reports.

“The leaders’ call lasted for 1.5 hours.”

“Trump told reporters at the White House that Putin had assured him Moscow isn’t seeking to ‘get involved’ in the crisis in Venezuela, despite assertions by the U.S. president’s top national security advisers that the Kremlin is offering critical support to Nicolas Maduro’s regime… The conversation, which Trump went on to describe as ‘very positive,’ appeared to be another example of Trump taking Putin’s claims at face value despite contrary evidence from his own government.”

CBS News: Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) says Trump gets “totally dazzled” and “googly eyed” when talking to Putin.

Quote of the Day

May 5, 2019 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Meddling is what my — I do when I call my daughter on a Saturday night. This was actually an invasion of our democracy, OK? This isn’t asking your kid, oh, what are you doing tonight? This is an invasion of our democracy.”

— Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), quoted by Politico, arguing that President Trump “has no incentive to make sure that American elections are secure and uncompromised.”

Mueller Agrees to Testify

May 5, 2019 at 11:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The House Judiciary Committee and a representative for special counsel Robert Mueller have agreed to a “tentative date” of May 15 for Mueller to testify about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Washington Post: “The committee has been seeking to hear from Mueller amid disagreements about whether Attorney General William P. Barr mischaracterized the special counsel’s report in his congressional testimony and statements.”

Most States Won’t See the Presidential Campaign

May 5, 2019 at 9:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pew Research: “During the last presidential election, nearly all campaign events were held in just 12 states… Nearly two-thirds of events were held in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Only Virginia voted for Clinton.”

The consensus map for 2020 currently shows just seven states as Toss Ups.

Liberal Mega-Donors Plan $100 Million Swing-State Blitz

May 5, 2019 at 9:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The country’s most powerful liberal donor club is reshaping its spending for the 2020 election, playing down longtime relationships with groups in Washington and instead preparing to pour $100 million into key states to help defeat President Trump,” Politico reports.

“The group, the Democracy Alliance, wants to fund everything from programs combating social media disinformation to candidate training sessions leading up to the election and the next round of redistricting.”

Public Remains Divided Over Mueller Probe

May 5, 2019 at 9:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds 60% of Americans say President Trump has been dishonest in the Russia investigation, while only 37% believe the report by special counsel Robert Mueller clears the president of wrongdoing.

Still, the public remains divided on impeaching Trump, with nearly half of respondents opposing holding impeachment hearings, and with the other half supporting either immediate impeachment proceedings or future congressional investigations to study the issue further.

The poll also finds 46% of Americans approving of Trump’s job — up 3 points since March

Democrats See GOP Pushing Them to Impeachment

May 5, 2019 at 9:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Hill: “GOP leaders know impeachment divides Democrats, and see a clear political advantage in promoting the debate. The Republicans’ campaign arm is steadily blasting emails linking moderate Democrats in swing districts to the impeachment effort. And a growing number of GOP lawmakers are all but daring Democratic leaders to launch the process while it remains unpopular with voters — a strategy not overlooked by top Democrats vowing to resist the bait.”

May Seeks a Brexit Deal with Corbyn

May 5, 2019 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May challenged opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to “put our differences aside” and strike a Brexit deal, Politico reports.

“May’s public overture, in an op-ed for the Mail on Sunday, comes after a month of talks among top Conservative and Labour Party officials. The prime minister wants to get a Brexit deal through parliament by June 30, so that MEPs elected in the European Parliament election due to be held May 23 do not need to take their seats.”
