Nikki Haley Tries to Speak to All Sides of a Fractured GOP

November 26, 2023 at 8:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“To beat former President Donald Trump in the coming months, Nikki Haley, his former ambassador to the United Nations, must stitch together a coalition of Republicans: Mr. Trump’s most faithful supporters, voters who like his policies but who have grown weary of him personally, and the smaller but still vocal contingent who abhor him entirely,” the New York Times reports.

“It’s a challenge that will test what political strategists and those who have observed Ms. Haley’s ascent from her first underdog win in South Carolina have said is among her greatest skills as a candidate: an ability to calibrate her message to the moment.”

Tennessee Town Banned Homosexuality

November 26, 2023 at 7:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For five months this year, homosexuality was prohibited in a Tennessee college town,” The Guardian reports.

“In June, the city council of Murfreesboro enacted an ordinance outlawing “indecent exposure, public indecency, lewd behavior, nudity or sexual conduct”. The rule did not explicitly mention homosexuality, but LGBTQ+ people in the town quickly realized that the ordinance references 21-72 of the city code, which categorizes homosexuality as an act of indecent sexual conduct.”

A GOP Consumed by the Far Right

November 25, 2023 at 10:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In early 2009, congressional Republicans were staring down a long exile in the political wilderness. Barack Obama was about to assume the presidency, and Democrats were within reach of a filibuster-proof, 60-vote supermajority in the Senate and the largest House majority in more than 20 years after the economic crisis of 2008.”

“But Republicans saw a glimmer of hope in the energized far-right populist movement that emerged out of a backlash to Mr. Obama — the first Black president — and his party’s aggressive economic and social agenda, which included a federal health care plan. Republicans seized on the Tea Party and associated groups, with their nativist leanings and vehemently anti-establishment impulses, as their ticket back to power.”

“But instead, the movement consumed them.”

November 25, 2023 at 10:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mitt Romney Would Vote for a Democrat

November 25, 2023 at 10:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Mitt Romney said he would vote for a Democrat over former President Trump or businessman Vivek Ramaswamy in a potential 2024 general election matchup,” the New York Post reports.

Said Romney: “I’d be happy to support virtually any one of the Republicans, maybe not Vivek, but the others that are running would be acceptable to me and I’d be happy to vote for them.”

He added: “I’d be happy to vote for a number of the Democrats too. I mean, it would be an upgrade from, in my opinion, from Donald Trump and perhaps also from Joe Biden.”

Trump Attends South Carolina Football Game

November 25, 2023 at 2:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump is set to attend a highly anticipated rivalry football game in South Carolina on Saturday as he campaigns in the key early-nominating state ahead of next year’s Republican presidential primary,” CNN reports.

“The Palmetto Bowl is an annual matchup between the University of South Carolina and Clemson University, the two largest universities in the state, and is taking place this year in the state capital of Columbia. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, a USC alumnus who has endorsed Trump, recently said that the former president had a ‘standing invitation’ to attend the game.”

The Messenger notes that Nikki Haley’s alma mater is Clemson University.

George Santos Lashes Out at Colleagues

November 25, 2023 at 11:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) said Friday he won’t resign from Congress but acknowledged he will likely be expelled as he lobbed salacious accusations at colleagues and called the chair of the Ethics Committee a “pussy,” Axios reports.

Santos said Congress is “felons galore” and filled with “people with all sorts of shiesty backgrounds.”

He called his colleagues “a bunch of hypocrites,” accusing them of extramarital affairs, getting drunk with lobbyists and then missing votes due to hangovers, and handing out voting cards like “candy” to allow others to vote on their behalf.

Hamas Delays Second Hostage Release

November 25, 2023 at 11:54 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hamas is holding up the further release of hostages, claiming the cease-fire deal that was brokered between the militant group and Israel has been violated,” The Messenger reports.

Marianne Williamson Is Polling as Well as Nikki Haley

November 25, 2023 at 11:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Nation: “But the political reporters who are falling over themselves to write about Haley seem to have shown little or no interest in Williamson—despite the fact that, over the past several weeks, she’s been posting numbers that are every bit as strong as Haley’s—and, in some cases, better.”

The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign

November 25, 2023 at 11:12 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Olivia Nuzzi: “Kennedy’s chill disposition is now the rest of the political world’s simmering panic attack. Since announcing in October that he would end his campaign for the Democratic nomination to officially become a problem for both major parties as an independent, fear — and denial — is what Kennedy seems to inspire among the staid Washington Establishment supporting the incumbent president and the gangland anti-Establishment Establishment supporting the former president. Officials from both party apparatuses are certainly looking at metrics that confirm Kennedy is turning the presidential election upside down.”

“At this point, all that’s clear is that no one has any idea what will happen between now and November 2024 or how to respond to the threat Kennedy poses to the Biden-Trump binary. As it is, Kennedy is in some cases polling not far behind either likely major-party nominee and in all cases polling well enough that, were the election held today, his presence in the race would define what the next chapter of American history looks like. As he put it, ‘My intention is to spoil it for both of them.’”

Missouri Governor Grants Pardons at Record Pace

November 25, 2023 at 11:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “For a dozen years as a rural sheriff, Mike Parson was the face of justice, the man ultimately responsible for catching and locking up local lawbreakers. Now governor, Parson also has become the face of mercy by pardoning more than 600 people in the past three years.”

“It coincides with a national movement to restore citizens’ rights and reputations after they have served criminal sentences.”

A Look at the Polling Averages

Hostage Deal Provides Break From Political Pressure

November 25, 2023 at 10:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Thanksgiving week deal between Israel and Hamas to secure a multiday pause in the fighting in Gaza to allow for the release of hostages, including Americans, provides President Biden with a reprieve from the pressure of Democrats urging a full cease-fire. But only a temporary one,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Chris Christie Under Pressure to End Bid

November 25, 2023 at 10:53 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nikki Haley’s Challenge

November 25, 2023 at 6:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The fate of Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign rests on a central question: Can she be all things to all Republicans?,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“As the Republican presidential primary field begins to narrow, Haley’s rise in polls represents the re-emergence of a more traditional Republican at a time when former President Donald Trump dominates the party.”

“Haley, a former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, has made progress in consolidating the anti-Trump vote. But that won’t be enough to win the nomination, surveys suggest, if she can’t figure out how to peel off at least some Trump support.”

“Her effort to straddle the two factions, as she has since entering the race in February as the first major candidate to challenge Trump, is a test of whether anyone can unite a party that remains deeply divided over its central figure.”
